Sealed in a pack, diced chicken from Waitrose. Use by date was yesterday! Would you cook it tonight?

I would eat it.

AcquadiP · 05/02/2025 21:13

No, wouldn't risk it.

Yep all the time. It’s not like the chicken knows that at 1 minute past midnight on X date it goes off. Supermarkets obviously have to be super careful just in case someone gets ill. Your sense of smell will tell you if it’s off.

We try buy our meat from our local butcher as much as possible, who never give us a UBD, and just use our common sense.

No. I cooked beef a couple of days out of date this week but I would never take the chance with chicken.

Bad chicken stinks - if it's off you'll know the second you open it! Otherwise it's fine.

I usually buy it from the butchers 5 mins drive away and put it straight in our (new and well maintained) fridge. I assume that the use by dates factor in longer journeys home, older fridges and time of day (it could be only a minute after its UBD after all! So if it looked and smelled fine I'd use it, absolutely!
