Sealed in a pack, diced chicken from Waitrose. Use by date was yesterday! Would you cook it tonight?

Yes. I've done it many times. Sniff and sight test first.

Scentsitive · 05/02/2025 14:03

Yes, definitely. If it looks and smells okay, it's fine.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/02/2025 14:08

If it smells ok, it will be ok. Off chicken smells bad very quickly.

Yes, absolutely. It's not really that different from defrosting chicken that you'd put in the freezer on its use by date (iyswim!). You'll know if it's gone off when opening the packet.

romanfriendsandcountrywomen · 05/02/2025 14:11

Yes unless it smelled.
My fridge is definitely colder (3 degrees) than the recommended temp. I've eaten it 2-3 days later and we've been fine.
(DH currently eating yogurts that expired Dec. That's mad and he will only have himself to blame when he gets sick)

Bignanna · 05/02/2025 14:13

There’s always a few days leeway for safety’s sake, so yes, and I have done so!

CarpetKnees · 05/02/2025 14:13

Yes, of course.

When chicken goes if, it is clear, from the smell.

Unless the yoghurts were visibly mouldy or fizzy they will be fine too!

The advice these days is to use the dates as a guide but look and smell to make the call. It's usually fine if stored in a fridge the whole time for a few days after.

Missingpate · 05/02/2025 14:28

Wow looks like I am an over worrier on this one (no surprise to me!). I am always super strict about use by dates but don’t worry about best before dates at all. It’s good to know others are less strict and lived to tell the tale

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/02/2025 14:29

If it smells ok yes. You would know very quickly if it was off.

Scentsitive · 05/02/2025 14:30

It's not that long ago that there weren't any dates on foods at all and people were just fine.

Snowmanscarf · 05/02/2025 14:31

Chicken is one food I wouldn’t, but I’m particularly fussy with chicken.

Edited

It is wise to be more cautious about use by dates as they are about food safety (BB dates are about taste quality) but a day or 2 after is usually OK for use by dates (subject to the sniff test!). It's not like the bacteria come out to play the moment the clock chimes midnight on the relevant date!

FastAndLast · 05/02/2025 14:34

No, but I would eat other meat. I have a weird mental NO with chicken if it’s a day late.

MidnightMeltdown · 05/02/2025 14:52

Yes of course!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/02/2025 14:55

I can and do eat stuff well past the sell by date or use by date. I check that there's no smell, keep stuff either frozen or in the fridge, and cook thoroughly. I have yet to have any problem.

My adult kids, on the other hand, will throw away food as soon as the date on the packet is reached. I don't know where I went wrong with them (given that my eldest once ate some sausages she found at the back of the fridge that had been out of date for WEEKS and was fine).

KittenPause · 05/02/2025 14:56

Yes if it looks and smells ok

Once I open up a pack of chicken breasts I transfer what's left into a Tupperware box so I just know it's going to be out of date by the time it's my next weekly shop so either freeze it or cook it

ParsnipPuree · 05/02/2025 20:46

Nope.. not chicken or fish.

DevilsIvyy · 05/02/2025 20:51

No I wouldn’t

onwardsup4 · 05/02/2025 20:53

Yep

fedup1212 · 05/02/2025 21:00

Nope not chicken.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 05/02/2025 21:07

We did tonight!

I'll let you know if there's consequences, but I doubt it very much.

Simonjt · 05/02/2025 21:10

If I ate meat yes, I used to test chickens for pathogens in a chicken processing plant, we had to guarantee that all meat was safe to eat 48 hours after the use by date. This was to make sure it was very fresh on the use by, but also so long car journeys home etc meant the use by date was still suitable.

Hiccupsandteacups · 05/02/2025 21:11

Ate some 2 days past best before just this week. we were fine luckily!!
