What’s the green flash above Venus?

I took this photo of the moon under Venus last night. Does anyone know what the green flash is above Venus? I’ve Googled it and loads of people ask, but I can’t find any answer.

At first I thought there was something on the lens but I took other photos of different things yesterday and there’s nothing there.

It doesn’t look very green here but it’s bright green on my phone. Trying again to see if the colour comes over better.

Was it moving ?
Many planes have a green flashing light on the left wing and a red one on the right..

I don’t remember seeing anything when I took the photo. Would a plane look like it’s flying so high above the moon? (To the eye, not really?) No idea if that’s a stupid questions so apologies if so!

Aliens

I think this is the most likely answer 😆

I think it was this - a Triple conjunction. It was very clear for us too

A sea serpent

(I often wonder what happened to that poster!)

Right, I think I’ve found something. It sounds like this.

It won't be this, in sky terms your green splodge is waaayyyyy outside the atmosphere of Venus! Possible thousands if not millions of light years away.

And it's not "above the moon" - you need to remember the sky is not a flat canvas, it's an infinite multi dimensional space. There are stars and planets that are below the moon when you look up at the sky but it doesn't mean they are literally lower down than the moon!

It's Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. Obviously in a green uniform for some reason.
I love that film. I mean a cat is one of the main characters and Jude Law plays a misogynist who gets smacked in the face. And a black single mum saves a group of Asylum seekers by out flying the evil arrogant soldiers.
And the only main male charater is the fabulous Samuel L Jackson, who loses an eye because he keeps annoying the cat. And Annette Benning is in it, she is so good and so underrated. Good soundtrack as well.

It was above the moon to the eye.

That's interesting, thanks.

The night sky has been fabulous. My dog walks are fascinating atm.

Fuckle · 02/02/2025 13:36

I looked up to the night sky on a clear night before Christmas and just as I was about to head inside two tiny satellites flying close to each other headed north. The ISS is graceful, but these two were surreal, just two tiny points of light heading towards the north pole as if on an urgent mission.

I wonder if it's a planet. Yours could be squiggly because of camera shake or something. My photo looks as though there's something coming off it at the top.

Huckyfell · 02/02/2025 19:56

I thought it looked like Uranus

I suggest you should refrain from commenting in future.

T4phage · 02/02/2025 19:59

I think it's Saturn, which looks yellowy apparently. It's visible to the naked eye and the planets are in alignment very soon. Mars is visible as well as an orange star.
