What’s the green flash above Venus?

I took this photo of the moon under Venus last night. Does anyone know what the green flash is above Venus? I’ve Googled it and loads of people ask, but I can’t find any answer.

At first I thought there was something on the lens but I took other photos of different things yesterday and there’s nothing there.

A sea serpent

(I often wonder what happened to that poster!)

Don't want to say his name because once more he may come back to haunt us.😁

It’s not Saturn as that is currently below Venus.

It’s not Uranus as that’s not its position.

Could it be a lens flare? It doesn’t look like a normal one, but odd things happen.

Bimblesalong · 02/02/2025 20:08

Could it be a little bit of satellite trail as it’s moving and the other heavenly bodies are clear points on the pic? Whilst the “shutter” was open on the camera for a few seconds it’s recorded the pathway of the satellite and it’s wobbly because the phone is handheld.

I thought it looked like Uranus

Either Uranus or M'Arse

Aaron95 "High energy particles bouncing off Elon Musk's ego." - fabulous 🤣🤣🤣

I'm sure I saw an insta video that said it's Jupiter and they had a telescope and also saw its moons too

Edited

I went back and looked after this and it’s a live video. I’ve screenshot a live image of it as a dot. It moved very quickly down towards Venus then off to the right. Not sure if it’s a satellite.

It honestly isn't a green flash from Venus. It cannot possibly be anything to do with the atmosphere of Venus as it's nowhere near Venus!

Best guess is a satellite, a plane, or some sort of cloud/vapour trail being lit by the moon at just the right angle.

It’s the Martians! Coming to visit us on Earth. H. G. Wells was right!

It might not help to identify this particular thing, but for Samsung phone users, the Astrophoto mode (in the RAW camera settings) is amazing and lays a live star map over the viewfinder so you know exactly what you're taking a photo of in terms of stars / constellations / planets.

High energy particles bouncing off Elon Musk's ego.

And the prize for best answer goes to @Aaron95 . You win the internet !

@HollyBerryz you could see Jupiter and it's moons but they weren't near our moon/Venus - was told that on the stargazing thing I did at the weekend and they were all pointed out.
Don't remember a green flash being mentioned tho.

Use an app called 'SkyView'. I use the lite version. Point it into the sky and it'll show you what the planets are (where the ISS is for example). It's excellent for a bit of star gazing.

@FreezingJane I sometimes use it at night in my bedroom even though I can see only a few stars. The music is soothing and sends me to sleep.

It's so relaxing! I have just put it on and can 'see' so many plants from the comfort of my bed.

The music is 👌🏼

Did you take the image around 8-9pm? There was an amber spike on Aurorawatch last night which was still around at midnight.
