If you have a surface near your front door... what's on it?

For no other reason than nosiness and DC is off sick watching pure shite on TV

My hallway table is currently host to:
-car keys
-pocket tissues
-toothbrush and toothpaste (waiting to go upstairs)
-phone charging cable
-a godawful vase waiting to go to a charity shop (I got suckered in at the antique shop in a haze of stress when I bought it)
-a brand new book and jar of enormous paper clips which will be donated to the schools tombola
-three old devices that need recycling

Box of charity stuff
Empty milk bottles
Basket of gloves/scarfes/snoods - cold weather accessories!
Growing collection of empty lush bottles to return
Ditto lightbulbs to recycle
A traffic light toy which works as a pedestrian crossing with red/green person

We've only got a small table in the hall. Generally an ornament, keys and paper. There should be a pen there, but it walks.

squashyhat · 31/01/2025 08:30

Windowsill. Pot for keys, box of masks (still!), router and electricity use monitor.

PandaChopChop · 31/01/2025 08:33

Oh- also forgot baskets of hats/scarfs/gloves and bike helmets. And an orchid on the window sill that I am desperately trying to keep alive.

Hall table. A giant yellow pottery bowl full of gloves, post, keys, gum shields, lip balm and balls of gardening twine, a fern in a pot and a small oil painting I keep not hanging.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 31/01/2025 08:33

We’ve got a table but it’s only got candles and a plant on it. We also have a meter cupboard and that has a dish for keys and another candle holder. I hate clutter on display.

That said, we also have a storage cupboard nearby where everything goes! And there’s currently a small bag of clothes on the floor to go in a charity bin when I next go out.

Ifailed · 31/01/2025 08:34

On a shelf in my porch:
11 billion clothes re-cycling bags that get left but never picked up
Screen wash and a funnel otherwise it goes everywhere bar the cumbersome and poorly placed filling point.
A pair of 'gardening' shoes
An old pair of slippers for going into the front garden when I can't be arsed to put on said shoes.
A ball of string and scissors that don’t work
A dead pot plant.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/01/2025 08:36

I have a small console which has a lamp and a vase on it. I don't use my front door so it always remains the same. My utility room by the back door is another matter entirely.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 31/01/2025 08:38

Shelf over radiator.

Library book waiting to be returned.
Hat and gloves.
2 sets of keys (house and car).
Sunglasses in case.
Roll of dog poo bags (we don't even have a dog, we were looking after our friend's dog last week and a roll got left behind!)

Frostine · 31/01/2025 08:38

A metal ornament / container thing that houses bike keys /car keys / house keys / post box key.
De-icer spray , a pen , some post that hasn't been open & and hat/glove set of mine .

poemsandwine · 31/01/2025 08:39

Small decorative bowl for keys and a bottle of hand sanitiser.

PandaChopChop · 31/01/2025 08:40

Oh! And post that needs to be returned as its not for us!

The stairs - car keys, spare key to friend's house, random letters that nobody's opened yet, card from the bin cleaner requesting payment.

Dweetfidilove · 31/01/2025 08:44

A vase with flowers, 2 ornaments, 2 pictures and the programme for the Christmas play (which just made it out of the car this week).

pelargoniums · 31/01/2025 08:46

I refuse to add horizontal surfaces where possible for precisely this reason, the random shite. Bottom few steps on the stairs have the kids’ toothbrushes to go back up, DD’s pyjamas because she got ready for school in the kitchen, a book. If I could ditch the stairs too…

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 31/01/2025 08:46

A jungle (lots of plants)

MintTwirl · 31/01/2025 08:48

A box of tissues, a couple of frame photos, a few random bits of Lego.
We mainly use our kitchen door so keys etc are in there.

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/01/2025 08:48

Lamp

bowl with gloves and hats

bowl with keys

Calypsocuckoo · 31/01/2025 08:48

We have a small table which has a vase of fake flowers and 2 parcels for Evri to collect. The table does have a drawer in it which is full of tissues, sunglasses, reusable shopping bags and other things you might need to take out with you, as well as some random leaflets which have come through the door and look useful.
we are lucky in having a storage cupboard in the hallway which is full of shoes, coats, wellies, baskets of scarfs, sun hats etc.

DutchCowgirl · 31/01/2025 08:54

Three baskets, they contain different things throughout the seasons. But now i have 1 for gloves/mittens, 1 for hats/caps and 1 for lights to wear when going for a walk/bike in the dark.

YorkieTheRabbit · 31/01/2025 09:17

Window still has a vase, reed diffuser and a large acorn ornament. On the table there’s a large ornamental bowl, lamp, vase of flowers, candles.

bitterorangessourlemons · 31/01/2025 09:29

Long, wide windowsill in unheated porch:
small painted rocks with coloured hearts, painted by DD
the cat's brush,
the peg basket,
a large glass jar with a bunch of fresh kale in it ( no room in the fridge, looks pretty too)
a used tea cup, left there by DH on his way in from garden
a small digital outdoor thermometer.

Chasingsquirrels · 31/01/2025 09:41

It might also have some unopened post (for people who haven't got back yet).
And sometimes small things to go out to the car or garage.

In the main I don't use it as a dumping ground though.

If you have a surface near your front door... what's on it?
Sockmate123 · 31/01/2025 09:45

Just 2 fauc plants and 2 books to go to charity shop. I try to keep on top of clutter but it's a constant battle!

PandaChopChop · 31/01/2025 10:14

I also try and avoid clutter but the hallway table is like the "gate" for things to leave the house or go upstairs 🥲
