Hot Ribena

I've succumbed to a stinker of an old fashioned heavy cold (like the ones we used to get pre-covid).
Full on snot mode, constant sneezing, runny nose and a fuzzy head.
I've just made myself a hot ribena.
I feel like I'm 10 yrs old again 🙂

What's your comfort food or drink when you're feeling ill?

Egg-in-a-cup was my Mother's stand by for a poorly child, and if you managed to eat that, then you got a small glass of Lucozade as a reward.

Get well soon @BigJanette , try Savlon to soothe your sore nose.

(I thought you could only have Lucozade when you were ill - blew my mind when I realised you could just buy it and drink it whenever you wanted!)

@EnjoythemoneyJane compounded by the fact it used to be sold in chemists, wrapped in the lovely orange cellophane 😅

Thanks for all the tips.
Hot ribena for all!

Yes 😂 - it was literally treated like medicine. And I think also pretty expensive, so you always knew you were properly ill when someone was ceremonially sent out for the Lucozade!

Aw my 6 and 3yo both love a warm ribena after a cold school run home.

Heinz tomato soup with a piece of sliced bread torn up into little floating islands! Cures everything😀

StormingNorman · 26/01/2025 11:05

I love hot Ribena too. When I’m ill though it’s always hot honey and lemon.

Rainbow450 · 26/01/2025 11:07

Ribena is yuck now so don't buy it. Hot Robinson's double concentrated blackcurrant is the next best thing. Have it daily during the winter as I don't drink tea/coffee much.

BadgersGalore · 26/01/2025 11:08

I used to love Ribena until it was ruined by the sugar tax - I can't bear artificial sweeteners Envy

BathSpider · 26/01/2025 11:10

Tomato soup in a mug or rice pudding with chocolate buttons mixed in - so comforting

Oh yes! It has to be ultra processed white bread, with tonnes of real butter on that melts in to soup. I add so much bread my soup becomes a solid 😆

Thereisnomagicwand · 26/01/2025 11:14

I’ve currently got a proper old skool cold and have just tucked into a fried egg sandwich smothered with tomato ketchup, accompanied by Ribena. Feeling sorry for myself…

AuntieDolly · 26/01/2025 11:40

Tomato soup with mashed potato in it (does tomato soup have magic healing properties?).

MargaretThursday · 26/01/2025 13:15

I have hot Ribena at work. I don't drink tea or coffee so I've bought a bottle of Ribena and keep it under my desk.
Then when I'm asked what I was to drink I ask for hot water.
I do have to make sure I wash the cup up before it dries though or it stains.

This post should be reported for heretical extremist views.

Any said against Ribena is clearly blasphemy. 😀

Heinz tomato soup and buttered white bread

Cheese and pickle sandwich on white bread

Farleys rusks and cold milk
Cornflakes with condensed milk and cold milk

At night, a good measure of brandy, brown sugar and warm milk.

WannaWannaSweetie · 26/01/2025 13:53

Hot vimto and honey.

Lovely when I'm in your position OP although I'll probably have no teeth when I'm an old gimmer.

Get well soon! It's truly a stinker of a virus Flowers

AlbertCamusflage · 26/01/2025 13:57

I rediscovered hot Ribena when I got covid for the first time. So, yeah, devastating pandemic, but ... swings and roundabouts.

Elderflower14 · 26/01/2025 14:02

We always had hot Ribena as children.. I can vividly remember being ill and tucked up in my parents huge way off the floor bed, reading a Famous Five book and drinking hot ribena.
Wilfs recently been very poorly with pleurisy and I told him to drink it.

HRTQueen · 26/01/2025 14:03

I absolutely love Ribena hot or cold and the lollies that I now make myself as I can’t find them. Hot Ribena is comforting

For original Ribena lovers of when it was more syrupy I have recently discovered Rocks blackcurrant and even better though hard to find Belvoir natural blackcurrant. Pricey but worth it and a tip once bottle is opened keep in the fridge as it’s fresh it can get mouldy (don’t let that put you off)

for comfort food when poorly I love fish in creamy butter sauce with mash, peas and lots of pepper. Yes I mean fish in a bag ☺️ the tray fish in a sauce tastes very very similar

paradisecityx · 26/01/2025 14:04

I LOVE hot Ribena. I recently had bronchitis and pneumonia and all I drank for best part of 6 weeks was hot Ribena 😍

Alconleigh · 26/01/2025 15:22

Chuck a tot of rum in it. Delightful.

Partridgewell · 26/01/2025 17:41

For my DD (21), it's ham and pea soup. I had no idea about this until she was recently ill. My lovely MIL used to have her when she was off school poorly as I'm a teacher. She was off loads because she had tonsillitis at least three times a year, and often got chest infections. MIL used to buy her pea and ham soup, because that's what her mum got for her when she was poorly as a little girl. I thought it was a lovely bit of family history.

My boys always ask for Ben and Jerry's chocolate brownie ice cream.

Solow12 · 27/01/2025 09:05

How are you feeling @BigJanette?!
I’ve been feeling rough since Tuesday night, struggled through work for the week and didn’t leave the sofa all weekend. Thought I was feeling better today but I’ve just done the school run and it’s knocked me for 6! 😩

ediepop · 27/01/2025 09:55

My mum used to sometimes do hot milk with a spoonful of honey and nutmeg grated over the top. I still find the smell of nutmeg intensely nostalgic. Usually if we were too ill for solid food. For colds: lemon and honey.
For my children it'll be 'Daddy's Feel Better Juice' DH always makes the kids hot lemon and honey with slices of fresh ginger and a clove or two. He makes it for me too and it's the most soothing thing when you're bunged up with a cold.

BigJanette · 27/01/2025 11:46

@Solow12
I’m still Snotty McSnotFace 😭
Really congested but runny nose at the same time, which is weird.
I took it easy over the weekend too but still don’t feel 100%. Life has to go on though so like you, I did the school run this morning and did a quick top up shop and have picked up a pack of Beechams all in one max strength flu capsules - Let’s hope it does what it says on the box!
Luckily I work from home so at least I’m not spreading the germs elsewhere.
Thanks so much for asking, I hope you feel better soon too!
