Hot Ribena

BigJanette · 26/01/2025 07:59

I've succumbed to a stinker of an old fashioned heavy cold (like the ones we used to get pre-covid).
Full on snot mode, constant sneezing, runny nose and a fuzzy head.
I've just made myself a hot ribena.
I feel like I'm 10 yrs old again 🙂

What's your comfort food or drink when you're feeling ill?

We always have hot Ribena too, and my mum used to give me hot Vimto.

Partridgewell · 26/01/2025 08:04

I absolutely love hot Ribena when I feel a bit poorly. Hope you're feeling better soon OP.

ShelfObsessed · 26/01/2025 08:05

I hope that you feel better soon.

Hot Ribena does work well.

egg in a cup and tinned peaches for me.

Thank you.
I think it's one of those which will get worse before it gets better unfortunately.
My nose is getting sore now from all the tissue usage.

Could have written your post! Had to struggle out of bed to pick up DC from activities yesterday. Picked up a bottle of Ribena on the way home and treated us all to a mug when we got in.
Boiled egg and soldiers on the menu for this morning, although I’m feeling a bit better.
get well soon, OP!

CharlotteCChapel · 26/01/2025 09:25

I generally drink hot Ribena I. The winter, when I was young my my used to give us ritz crackers and cream of tomato soup when we were ill.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 26/01/2025 09:26

Ooh l love hot Ribena - my next go to would be srambled egg

TriangleLight · 26/01/2025 09:26

Banana custard here if I’ve been ill

Now want a hot ribena though!

AtticusCatticus · 26/01/2025 09:29

When I was ill my mum would give me my favourite food of steak and tinned potatoes with lots of salt, and hot Ribena.

As an adult (when I have too cook for myself) my go-to comfort foods are pickled herrings or Smash with butter and cheese.

Globalwalker · 26/01/2025 09:34

I love hot Ribena when I’ve got a sore throat.

When we had colds as a child we always had a hot pot of sliced lemons in water sitting on the hob, and it would be topped up with fresh ginger and a bit of honey as needed. A mug of that really helped a sore throat etc. Add or replace lemons as they become depleted or mushy. Nice smell too.

Globalwalker · 26/01/2025 09:34

Hot lemonade too help a sore throat.

JC03745 · 26/01/2025 09:37

I've never tried it. In fact, never heard of hot ribena till I moved to the UK 20yrs ago.

As a side note OP, get some vaseline for your nostrils to help sooth and prevent more scratching from tissues. Also, a netti pot is brilliant for clearing the back of your sinuses. Feels odd at first, but tip your head forward and breath slowly through you mouth if using one. Clearing the gunk out is SO liberating!

PollyPeeves · 26/01/2025 09:37

I have no idea who came up with it when I was younger but if we had a cold or even just came back into the house when it was particularly cold outside, we had hot Irn Bru with cracked black pepper in it.
I used to love it as a child/teen - it's not so good now they've changed the recipe unfortunately 😏

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 26/01/2025 09:55

I remember when beechams brought out hot blackcurrant lemsip and my mother gave us a huge lecture on how it was not the same as hot ribena and we were only to take it when she was with us.

Bit of vaseline on your nose ,it helps act as a barrier with the tissues.hopefully you're better soon with the power of hot ribena,I used to be given hot lemonade or lucozade when really ill 70s remedies.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 26/01/2025 10:03

Hot Ribena and knorr packet chicken noodle soup.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 26/01/2025 10:10

Tomato soup with buttered toast soldiers and Lucozade in the original big bottle with the orange cellophane was my mum’s cure all for pretty much everything. (I thought you could only have Lucozade when you were ill - blew my mind when I realised you could just buy it and drink it whenever you wanted!)

Brings back a real sensation of being cosy and cared for, especially when I was allowed the little portable telly in my bedroom and could watch all the daytime rubbish, so I still associate being a bit under the weather with eating tomato soup under a blanket watching TV!

Yes!!!

So with you in this - plus porridge with golden syrup.

Feeling decidedly old school now 😀

@EnjoythemoneyJane compounded by the fact it used to be sold in chemists, wrapped in the lovely orange cellophane 😅

Thanks for all the tips.
Hot ribena for all!

My DD wasn't well last week , she had
hot Ribena

toast
soup ( I made some tomato/chilli soup ) with bread

Dr PawPaw ( I got her the Lip&Eye balm recently which is nice on sensitive skin)

Gilead · 26/01/2025 10:39

Hot Ribena Winter Spice is amazing!

WaneyEdge · 26/01/2025 10:40

Used to love hot Ribena/Vimto until they added sweetener 🤢.

I now use Waitrose Summer Fruit cordial as that is still made with sugar.

For the nose, I always have a tube of happinose, used to be able to buy in chemists but I’ve only been able to get it on Amazon the last few years.

RainyDaysAndGlumDays · 26/01/2025 10:43

Hot ribena is our go-to in flasks for winter walks. If feeling poorly, it has to be either hot ribena to drink, or hot water steeped with lemons/oranges and fresh ginger. Heinz tomato soup and buttered white bread to eat.

Sfog96 · 26/01/2025 10:45

Yuck!
Hot toddy works everytime! Extra whisky

SleepingisanArt · 26/01/2025 10:47

Used to love hot ribena when ill but ribena is vile now that they've replaced the sugar with artificial sweeteners which give me headaches. So I've gone ultra posh and have hot bottle green spiced winter berries! Here custard or rice pudding are the go to 'I don't feel well ' foods with chicken soup being the cure for absolutely everything!
