How much do you think car mechanics earn?

My son is a car mechanic. He qualified last year. I was talking to a friend about his starting salary and she was surprised at it. So what would you expect a newly qualified mechanic to earn?

£25-30k ?

Ksjdbdb · 19/01/2025 10:52

It depends on lots of things surely - area and whether it’s a small garage or dealership. Below 30K I’d say but if they have a good bonus structure then more.

Positivenancy · 19/01/2025 10:55

25-28k

He works for a dealership. There's a bonus scheme but I'm talking base salary

What do you mean by 'qualified'? College course-Level 1? Level 2 3? Apprenticeship? MOT testing?

Is it working for a small garage, or working for Ford? Is he 16/19/23?

Loads of variations. If he is 18, I'd be surprised if he was on £35,000. If he'd been working for Ford since he was 16 and on a really robust training course, it wouldn't surprise me if he was on that in his 20s.

What does he earn, @AnnaQuayInTheUk ?

SweedieLie · 19/01/2025 10:58

£25-£30k

Changingplace · 19/01/2025 11:00

I don’t know about starting salaries in cars but my brother is a HGV mechanic and he’s on £55k plus bonuses if he does call outs, it’s a skilled job.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 19/01/2025 11:02

@Shinyandnew1 as I said, it's a dealership. He started there as an apprentice just over 3 yeas ago and has just finished his apprenticeship. So he's now on a "proper" salary rather than an apprenticeship.

£30k?

bottlemom · 19/01/2025 11:05

His age makes a difference. If over 21 I'd say £27000, less if younger

I was typing at the same time so didn't see it was for a dealership. How old is he?

tedibear · 19/01/2025 11:08

Just qualified and I imagine he's under 21 so they shouldn't but probably will take that into account. £25k.

RuthW · 19/01/2025 11:09

Minimum wage or just above. That's what someone I know earns.

Knowitall69 · 19/01/2025 11:10

Just out of apprenticeship?

£17k to £20k.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 19/01/2025 11:10

No, he's older than 21 as he worked in an admin role for a few years before deciding on a career change! So maybe the starting salary would be lower for under 21s.

The dealership has a structured salary scheme so DS is on the bottom of the scale.

Depends. If he's classed as an apprentice, first level etc. Not very much. Fully qualified quite a lot

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 19/01/2025 11:10

So how much is it?!

PigInAHouse · 19/01/2025 11:11

I mean, just tell us 😂

Thedarkmode · 19/01/2025 11:12

What is it? Then we’ll say if we’re surprised or not.

Knowitall69 · 19/01/2025 11:12

Big difference between "fully qualified" and "fully experienced."

He's fully qualified

Like many trades they are in short supply so £35 to £40 thousand wouldn't surprise me.

femininomenon · 19/01/2025 11:13

£38k

Please do otherwise this'll be like one of those interminable how old do I look? threads on S&B.
