How much do you think car mechanics earn?

My son is a car mechanic. He qualified last year. I was talking to a friend about his starting salary and she was surprised at it. So what would you expect a newly qualified mechanic to earn?

£25k - £30k

Anewuser · 19/01/2025 11:15

My son has a degree and a masters (with distinction) in automotive engineering, so 4 years study and is on £30k, so I would imagine £22k.

Just tell us now, please. Grin

Yup..... Time to tell us.

x2boys · 19/01/2025 11:18

Yes tell us it's getting boring now.

UnstableEquilibrium · 19/01/2025 11:20

I'd go higher, just in the interests of contrarianism and say slightly above average wage, so 37k, but I've really no idea.

ssd · 19/01/2025 11:21

Who cares

BarbaraHoward · 19/01/2025 11:22

I'd say probably similar to graduate salaries. Some potential for a very high income but probably relies on running his own business down the line.

meganna · 19/01/2025 11:22

I'd say 25000

Positivenancy · 19/01/2025 11:23

Jesus @AnnaQuayInTheUk just tell us now…it’s not going to be worth the wait either way.

Deadringer · 19/01/2025 11:23

35k

Theunamedcat · 19/01/2025 11:23

Some mobile mechanics charge £75 per hour plus parts

DreamW3aver · 19/01/2025 11:23

Its not something I've ever thought about so guessing would mean nothing, Indeed suggests anything between about 25k and 45k.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 19/01/2025 11:25

£26,572

Notmyregularusrname · 19/01/2025 11:26

30-35k

Tcsha · 19/01/2025 11:26

£18,000-£35,000 depending on experience according to HMRC careers website. So if your son has a few years experience I would guess £23,000.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 19/01/2025 11:26

His starting salary is £34k plus bonus. If he hits his targets he can earn a bonus of up to £500 per month.

I guess because I've seen how much he's had to learn during his apprenticeship that seems a reasonable salary to me, but the friend I was talking to was very surprised. I think she thought mechanics didn't earn much more than minimum wage. So I wondered what others thought.

He doesn't have any experience because he's newly qualified. An experienced mechanic in his dealership would earn more

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 19/01/2025 11:28

@Sherararara is that even minimum wage?

OP posts:
Bjorkdidit · 19/01/2025 11:29

At least £35/40k possibly more? He's qualified in a skilled job, so I would expect him to be on well above NMW, which is nearly £25k, so I don't know why so many are saying that amount. Plus what hours does he do? Many work extra hours eg on Saturday mornings.

Positivenancy · 19/01/2025 11:29

Lovely, good for him. He put in the time so why not.

Bjorkdidit · 19/01/2025 11:30

Cross posted but I was a lot closer than most.

MiddleAgedDread · 19/01/2025 11:31

I would have thought similar to your friend, not much more than minimum wage. A lot of graduate jobs probably don’t start on £34k.

That's sounds ok a mechanic is a,skilled professional I don't why anyone would think he would only be on minimum wage.
