GP surgery rang my husband after I ignored their call

First of all I am new here so please bear with me. I am overdue a smear, and my GP surgery tried to call me twice today to book it. Both times I was unable to pick up the phone, so after the second missed call they then dialled my husband's mobile phone. He could not pick up as he was under the kitchen sink at the time, but the fact that they called him has really angered me. He is listed as my NOK, but his number is not down as a contact number for me. Is this right?

I'd be annoyed about that too. Your health is not his business.

mynameiscalypso · 13/01/2025 15:40

I would not be happy about that at all. Surely it would be a breach of patient confidentiality?!

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/01/2025 15:41

It wouldn’t bother me but it does you so you need to make that clear and have a note put on your records.

It must be on your record as a contact option? I doubt they would have discussed anything with him.though - and, if he had picked up, just asked if they could speak to Aqua Crow.

If its not a contact option on your record, then it sounds like they've been put under pressure to complete a percentage of smea tests to get paid! Or he needs to go in as well for something else.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 13/01/2025 15:43

Are you sure they rang your husband for your smear? Maybe he's due a blood test or something. With surnames being the same you may be next to each other on the call list.

tailinthejam · 13/01/2025 15:44

How do you know that's what they were phoning you about?

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/01/2025 15:45

i’m surprised at this. I’d assume you have his number down as a 2nd number or perhaps they were calling him about something unrelated

I don’t think my dh is connected to my medical records in any way

Very good point, I hadn't thought of that. He is on heart meds (but is not due a review for 2 months).

They left a voicemail with the first call.

They left a voicemail with the first call.

Maybe the 2nd call was about something completely different.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/01/2025 15:51

They called your husband to talk about a smear test? What the actual fuck. They're desperately trying to increase uptake in cervical smears but that's a step too far.

I was really disappointed to see a ridiculous display about cervical screening at a doctor's surgery. It was covered in pink balloons and cartoons that looked like they were aimed at 3 year olds. None were depicting or talking about an actual smear test.
One picture was a cartoon girl holding a pink hairdryer and pink hair straighteners with the caption 'screening stars' with actual star stickers all around??

Why infantilise women this way?

2dogsandabudgie · 13/01/2025 15:52

Has he had a flu jab if he's on heart medication. If not that could be why they called him. Our surgery have sent both me and my husband a text today to say that masks must be worn at the surgery due to the rise in flu cases.

KezzaMucklowe · 13/01/2025 15:55

I'd imagine it has somehow been put on your records as an alternative number too.
I'd be really surprised if they looked at your NOK details just because you didn't answer

Arlanymor · 13/01/2025 15:57

The issue is what the voicemail said isn't it - did they ask to speak to you or for you to get in contact with them? Or did they reference the smear specifically?

Personally I wouldn't put someone down as NOK if I wasn't happy with them knowing my medical information. You're not obliged to have an NOK.

Zonder · 13/01/2025 15:58

I would check what they called him for before you get upset about it.

This^
there is a chance that they were working through the list and your numbers were next to each other if you have the same surname.

Yes it is.

However her health date is subject to GDPR and shouldn't be shared

shiverm · 13/01/2025 16:10

@BobbyBiscuits oh my word that poster would fill me with rage.

I actually love how much I'm pestered for smears becuase it turned out I had hpv and precancerous cells that were subsequently removed, and I've come clear since. I'd be bemused/a bit snarky that they called my partner, but grateful that they were doing it to potentially save my life.

Paganpentacle · 13/01/2025 16:18

His mobile must be on your records as an alternate contact number... sometimes people have several.
I can assure you that they will not have gone into your husbands records looking for a contact number for you - or to speak to him about your health issues.

Bannedontherun · 13/01/2025 16:19

My GP surgery called to cancel my smear test appointment, and rescheduled it for the following week with my husband as i was not in!!!

Strictlymad · 13/01/2025 16:20

beofre you jump down their throats how do you know they were going to discuss your personal health details? My guess if they would have said we are trying to get hold of aqua crow, you are down of nok, could we confirm we have the phone number correct please?

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/01/2025 16:21

Why would they call your OH?

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 13/01/2025 16:26

You must have his number down as another contact number

lostinthememory · 13/01/2025 16:26

So they called you twice, and then called him.

Did they leave him a voicemail? Maybe they had to speak to him about something as well?
