Any other early dinner eaters out there?

I grew up always eating dinner around 5.30/6 so I guess got used to eating fairly early

I now WFH and finish at 4 and it's not unheard of for me to eat dinner around 4.30. 6 would be late for me. I quite like intermittent fasting but always need breakfast (eat around 9am) so this gives me a decent non eating window

If I eat later than 6 I would need a snack after work, which is extra calories. If I eat early I don't snack before bed - that would be me done for the day and won't eat again till breakfast

I read on here about people eating at 9pm, I would honestly be gnawing my arm off 🤣

Obviously not everyone can facilitate eating so early with work / clubs etc but anyone else prefer an early dinner?

I don't get home until 7. I can't walk in and eat straight away. We eat around 7.30/8.

Beautifulweeds · 09/01/2025 18:16

Grew up with a cooked dinner on the table about 5pm as well but I havent done this myself. All depends when we get in from work. DC have it about 5pm but we tend to eat later on, especially at weekend. X

I mostly wfh and eat early (4:30 onwards) because of going out in the evening for my hobby. My meetup groups all start 6-7:30 but some are a 45min drive away, so I can sometimes be leaving home at 5:15.

What if you go out for a meal?

I am rarely out for a meal.

TomatoSandwiches · 09/01/2025 18:20

If left to my own devices and not having to work around children and school I'd eat at 10am and 3pm, if I went to bed after 10pm I'd have a small snack like 2 crackers and cheese at 8/9pm.
Currently I'm on new medication and I'm crashing for bed at 7-8pm.

BusySittingDown · 09/01/2025 18:22

We eat our meals like toddlers! 😂

Breakfast any time from waking to 8am (when the kids and DH leave for school/college and work).
Lunch at 12, when we're all at home, and tea (dinner) at 5 every night!

I work from home and we're all usually home for 4pm so we just start dinner.

We've tried to go until later but everyone starts moaning that they're hungry. I think we've trained our stomachs to be hungry at that time, ha ha!

reichs79 · 09/01/2025 18:24

Supper here at 8pm, by the time we've all got home, showered, taken time to decompress

Ladyof2025 · 09/01/2025 18:24

Yes I eat my dinner around 6:00 p.m. certainly no later than seven. The next day I try not to eat before noon and thus have an 18-hour fast every day.

Sidebeforeself · 09/01/2025 18:28

Ive found my people! I really dont like eating after 6pm - find it really hard to digest food if I eat any later. I love eating out butt it’s always a bit of a panic if I cant get a table for 7pm ! Any later and I’m done.

What if you go out for a meal?

All hell breaks loose in this house!

Only joking.

If we're going out as a family we tend to book a table or go out for our general meal time. Which is quite cool coz it's usually quiet!

If we're going out with other people and the table is booked or we're going for 8ish, which is usually the case, we just do that...but I will be absolutely bloody starving hungry 😂.

BusySittingDown · 09/01/2025 18:30

I feel awful when DD2 goes for sleepovers at her best friend's house. They often don't eat till 9 and she texts me saying she's starving. I'm like sorry DD, they're normal - it's us that are weird!

goingdownfighting · 09/01/2025 18:36

I grew up down south and had breakfast, lunch at 1pm, tea and biscuits at 4pm and dinner at 7:30.

Moved up north and dinner is at 5:30 with the kids followed by supper at 8ish.

To me it seems the last 2 meals have swapped and northerners will have a brew in the evenings as I never did when I lived down south.

Daisyvodka · 09/01/2025 18:47

Between 5-6 most days, 7 on weekends really.
This thread is making me think curious though those of you who do intermittent fasting, has anyone ever done this and noticed a real difference if it's only a few hours? So I see 16:8 a lot, I currently eat around 8.30, 12pm and 6, has anyone moved from these sort of timings to a 10am - 6pm window and noticed a real difference or is that hour and a half in the morning not really going to make a difference? (I likely wouldn't change how much or what I eat as I generally have healthy, protein focused breakfast/lunches anyway)

RickiRaccoon · 09/01/2025 18:57

My family used to eat at 6-6.30pm. We now do a 5.30-6pm dinner with 2 toddlers. That way we (mostly, depending on work) eat together and have time for baths and bed after. When the kids are older, we'll probably shift to 7pm but no later (unless we're out).

thismummydrinksgin · 09/01/2025 19:00

God are you me 😂

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2025 19:03

We normally eat about 8, I don’t eat breakfast, have either a brunch at 11ish if I’m hungry or lunch at 1, then if I’ve had the brunch I’ll have a snack at 4 and if not then just dinner at 8. I’m just used to it.
i don’t like eating early but we are all different!

WaneyEdge · 09/01/2025 19:04

If I was on a late shift (1830-0030) I’d eat a proper meal at around 1530/1600 as the shift was only 6 hours so I didn’t get a break. Some of my colleagues used to bring their tea /dinner to work on late turns but then you just knew that sods law dictates that something would happen that you’d have to sort out as soon as the microwave had pinged!

Most of us were lone workers; a few locations had more staff so they could’ve swapped around. I get meals at work now as do long shifts until late. Generally eat between 1700-1800.

I’ve been off today but not felt very well, in the bath now and will have tea in the next hour or so.

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/01/2025 19:05

We eat at about 5pm.

both wfh and kids get in from school at 4pm

Flidina · 09/01/2025 19:06

We always aim eat at 5pm, never any later ,don't like eating later as I like to make sure I'm not going to bed on a heavy meal, as that would keep me awake with indigestion. If we eat out we always try to stick to our normal eating time.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 09/01/2025 19:14

I like to eat around 6-6:30 pm on work days and around 5:30-6pm on non work days. Any later and I end up with awful indigestion all night. Always used to annoy me on holiday with extended family when they wanted to book dinner at 8:30pm. Quite glad I can use my toddler as an excuse for early dinners now. I tend to have my other meals early too, breakfast at 6:30-7am and lunch at 12 noon.

Bloom15 · 09/01/2025 19:24

I have my evening meal between 5:30'and 6. I don't usually eat anything else before bed, although i occasionally do. I wfh 7 - 3.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/01/2025 19:31

Lots of people where I live (NW England) eat tea at 5:30. I'm from the SE though and a normal dinner time for me is 7 or 7:30. Dh and I don't get home from work until 6 anyway.

EveryDayisFriday · 09/01/2025 19:34

We don't have a set time for dinner, it can anytime from 4.30 to 8.30. We tend to eat separately these days as we are all hungry at different times.

HellofromJohnCraven · 09/01/2025 19:34

We have always eaten 7 to 8 ish. Kids when younger would have a sandwich when they got in from school to keep them going.
Now they are grown up, I eat a small meal at 1ish then dinner at 7 between 8.
Suits me!

LostMyLanyard · 09/01/2025 19:35

Have my tea around 6-ish if I can. Sometimes I'm late home though so it's nearer 7, but I hate it when that happens! I'm in bed by 9 (up at 5!) so if I eat late I can't sleep comfortably (heartburn!)
