Any other early dinner eaters out there?

I grew up always eating dinner around 5.30/6 so I guess got used to eating fairly early

I now WFH and finish at 4 and it's not unheard of for me to eat dinner around 4.30. 6 would be late for me. I quite like intermittent fasting but always need breakfast (eat around 9am) so this gives me a decent non eating window

If I eat later than 6 I would need a snack after work, which is extra calories. If I eat early I don't snack before bed - that would be me done for the day and won't eat again till breakfast

I read on here about people eating at 9pm, I would honestly be gnawing my arm off 🤣

Obviously not everyone can facilitate eating so early with work / clubs etc but anyone else prefer an early dinner?

I will eat at 5 - 5.30 when at home but when working sometimes can be around 7.30 if kids have clubs etc. Prefer to eat earlier.

Arewethebadguys · 09/01/2025 13:27

Haha we always ate at 5 growing up. Now with 2 kids it's the same with a light supper before bed at 7. Sometimes no supper if dinner is slightly later. Only eat at 8 etc if going out for dinner.

Find it so strange the number of folk on here who make a meal for the kids at 5ish then eat themselves after the kids are in bed. To me, food is about sharing a meal together, conversation, finding out about each other's day and modeling the behaviour you'd like to see at the dinner table eg using a knife and fork, trying something new, finishing what's on your plate etc.

Ideal is 5 but with kids and work sometimes we’re about 8. Hate it but has to be done!

Dinner here is usually between 7.30 to 8.30.
I think it depends on what time you rise, eat lunch, retire.

DecayingRelic · 09/01/2025 13:29

we call it tea and have it at 4.45 every night

DecayingRelic · 09/01/2025 13:30

I do go to bed early though

breakfast 6.30
dinner 11.30
tea 4.45

i do not eat between meals, no snacking, still overweight though🙄

Sinkintotheswamp · 09/01/2025 13:31

Yes! Love eating at 5-5:30 and know I'm done for the evening. I've even had risotto around 4pm before.

Earing earlier helps my IBS. Late meals, even a small amount, hurt my stomach.

EmpressaurusKitty · 09/01/2025 13:32

I wfh most days so have a meal at lunchtime & a snack in the evening, unless I’m out for dinner. It works a lot better for me.

marble505 · 09/01/2025 13:33

Ideal time for me is 4.30-5pm. I've adapted to my kids. They eat a tiny lunch at school at 12 so no surprise at 4.30 they are starving.

suki1964 · 09/01/2025 13:34

Dinner for us is 7:70 and it wouldn't be unusual for Mr S to go find a pudding at around 9pm before heading to bed at 10pm

I wake at 5:30 and eat between 12 and 1pm and then dinner at 7:30

LoudPlumDog · 09/01/2025 13:34

Me. All adults here and we eat at 4:30pm -5:30pm.

gaggiagirl · 09/01/2025 13:35

Yes we have our tea at 5pm. I have lunch at 12 and am ravenous by then.
The children are hungry from the moment they get in from school so the sooner tea is on the table the less snacking they will do

mrsm43s · 09/01/2025 13:38

We do
Breakfast 7-7.30ish
Lunch 1-2 ish
Dinner 7.30 -9.30 ish.

No snacking.

When the children were younger we had dinner at 6-7pm ish, and that did lead to us adults sometimes picking at dinner then snacking later in the evening.

3catsandcounting · 09/01/2025 13:41

Eating early is not an option for many. DH works til 6.30-7pm most weekdays.
Many years ago when my children were younger, they had their meal at 5ish, and I sat with them. Then DH and I would eat around 7-7.30; no choice really, other than leaving him to eat on his own.
Weekends were different, the 4 of us always ate together 🤷‍♀️

Sourisblanche · 09/01/2025 13:42

When my dc were primary age it was 5pm now they are sixth form age it’s around 6pm or when they’ve finished first round of homework. Dd like to get her’s out of the way so I do have a handful
of nuts if I’m very peckish.

PigInAHouse · 09/01/2025 13:42

I’m the opposite, if I ate when you do I’d need more food before bed (and therefore extra calories), whereas if I eat later I don’t need a snack in the afternoon.
Everyone is different. My ex boyfriend’s parents used to have a huge Sunday lunch on the table at 1pm, and in the week dinner was served at 4.30pm, and I just couldn’t eat full meals at those times.

BendingSpoons · 09/01/2025 13:43

We eat around 5-6pm depending on who is at home and how long dinner takes. Sometimes when I wfh DH announces dinner at about 4.45 and I have to remind him I'm still working! I used to snack in the evening but have now mostly cut that out to sort of do intermittent fasting. (I delay,/skip breakfast 5 or 6 days a week usually).

PlanetJungle · 09/01/2025 13:44

Don’t like eating early - 8pm is normal for us, depends what you are used to. Friends who come to dinner and are not happy with later eating are advised to have a snack before coming over. If I was to visit someone eating at 5pm - I wouldn’t make a fuss I’d just skip lunch.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/01/2025 13:44

Ha ha! I often have meeting until 6pm, I think my colleagues would be most out out if I turned up eating my dinner. Mr Monkey works in retail and some of his shifts do not finish until 8.30pm.

We tend to eat at about 8 - 10pm.

If you eat at 10pm, when do you go to bed?

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/01/2025 15:28

Depends. Earliest tends to be at about 11pm. Mr Monkey tends to be the later eater as he does not get in from work until 9.30pm at the earliest at least twice a week.

AllTooWellTV · 09/01/2025 15:29

I’m an early dinner person. My husband also sometimes starts work at 6pm so we could be having our main meal at 4!

Gettingbysomehow · 09/01/2025 15:30

I'm eating dinner now at 15:30 because if I eat after 5 I have indigestion all night.

mitogoshigg · 09/01/2025 15:32

6./6.30 here, can't eat earlier due to work but my digestion is better for not leaving g it later. I don't snack during the evening
