Why do people buy SUVs?

MuskIsACnt · 08/01/2025 23:37

I need a new car and I’ve always had a small car but it seems every other car now is an SUV, so I’m wondering why and whether I need one.

The boot space is often the same as smaller cars, they’re more expensive and arguably harder to park. Am I missing some great benefit that I should be considering? Or does driving a big car just make people feel big (I used to drive a Luton van and that made me feel big)?

It's mental. The parking spaces aren't designed for cars the size of minibuses!!

I have had a Range Rover and a Lexus SUV. They are too big for some women drivers and I have seen many women struggling to park them or find a big enough parking space that their large vehicle will fit in

Bit sexist there. These small pathetic women can't handle the big muscle car?! Please!

@Thebellofstclements

And yet our parents managed to tow horse boxes with Volvo estates back in the 90s
They are so long though. Annoying to park. And in all honesty, why is a Volvo estate ok but an SUV not? Genuinely don't get it

Finally, some sense!

Not at all I am just telling you what I have observed while out and about supermarket shopping and picking up my grandchildren from school
i have also seen elderly men and women struggling to park and wondered if they should still be driving at their age

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 12/01/2025 14:34

So they're too big for some drivers? Old/young, male/female? Which are you actually saying. Because one is sexist.

I am saying some drivers cannot drive large cars or park them. I myself cannot drive a HGV and I admit I cannot😉

Personally- There are 5 of us, one of whom is still in a car seat, it has 2 fold down boot seats for when we take extra people around with us, it has a massive boot and we go camping/ are renovating a house so need the room for everything. And it's reliable as well as having the space we need- I found that estate cars of the same age didn't have as much room across the back seats or have the extra boot seats available and we wanted a newer car this time than our previous 2005 giant estate, as we are hoping for good reliability for longer (as it is, this is a 15 plate. Which is still 10 years newer than anything else I've ever owned!). A small car wouldn't work for our family set up- we tried out loads of different models of car before deciding on this one.

What did you go for in the end @DinosaurOfFire ?

@deeahgwitch We went for a Kia Sorrento, we've had it about 18 months or so now.

Ironically I find it's often drivers of the teeniest cars that can't drive or park. They spend forever trying to park their little hatchback in a space big enough for a bus and drive in the middle of country lanes with no idea how far over from the edge they are.

Agree I’ve seen some truly dreadful parking attempts of very small cars. 😆 and driving at 20mph downcountry lanes. ( although tbf I was stuck behind one of these for ages this morning so still reeling 🤣 ) Then they’re Practically down to 5mph if there’s a slight bend ahead.

We had quite a big rtc in America some years back. My leg would have been mangled in a ‘normal’ car. We both switched to SUVs soon after. Fitting 3 medium size dogs in a hatchback would present a challenge, as would transporting 6 bales of shavings home.

Huge boot, 7 seats when I need them, large cabin space for rear facing car seats. I live rurally so 4 wheel drive and increased height and wading sensors available in bad weather/flooding which happens frequently.

I'd probably have it even if I lived in the city though just because I like it! I find it simple to park and it's safer for my kids in a crash.

What car is it please ?@maryberryslayers
It sounds good.

An SUV alone doesn't provide safety. It's about the NCAP rating. There is footage from a top gear episode where they drive various cars into a concrete block at the same speed (I think it's 40mph but don't take my word) and the Ford fiesta comes out better than the Land Rover (think it was a defender) which would have crushed the leg of the driver as the pedals would have been rammed into them. The fiesta had a 5 star and the Land Rover a 3.

Was more the height of the impact, safety rating aside. Can't remember what we were driving, some kind of Chevy, maybe. We'd debated swapping for a PT Cruiser, glad we didn't, especially when a major flood occurred the same night and we were in the replacement Jeep and up a height enough not to be affected.

I've noticed that too. It's weird, isn't it? Doesn't matter if it's a bobble hat, trilby or baseball cap. If the driver is wearing a hat then give that car a wide berth.

2025holidayplanner · 09/01/2025 10:31

I have something kind of in between an estate and an SUV. We got ours for more internal space for growing teens and a big boot was very high on our list so I don’t fall into the category of big car/small boot.

What car is it please @2025holidayplanner ?
I'm looking for something with a big boot but don't know if a big SUV is for me.
