Your Dad’s crushes

There was a fun thread a while back about your mum’s crushes over the years so I thought I’d start one for your dad’s. My dad (born mid 50s) has fancied over the years:

Agnetha from Abba
Kim Wilde
Whitney Houston
Meg Ryan
Leslie Ash
Jennifer Aniston
Celine Dion
Sally Phillips

Gosh I find it weird that pp's Dads discussed fancying other women with them. They must have lived in very sexually open homes.

What an odd take. How does your Dad saying “oh she’s a looker!” about for example Debbie Harry or Dolly Parton (my Dad’s crushes) or you noticing that your Dad always stops to watch if they’re on TV translate to “very sexually open”? Do you say the same about Mums saying “Oh isn’t he lovely?” About David Essex as all the Mums I knew did?

My kids know who my celeb crushes are because I have a couple of pictures of them stuck to the fridge with magnets - Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser anyone? 😁. Would you consider that “very sexually open”?

"Sexually open homes"??! Quite the opposite. I know my father liked the aforementioned women as he always refers to them as "The second Mrs ..." or "Your future stepmother".

I could never envisage my father saying " oh she's a looker" about any woman, celebrity or otherwise. He complimented my mother but to say that about another woman just didn't and wouldn't happen because it's just not an appropriate thing for a man in a relationship to say.

So he expressed his sexual preferences to you? I find that extremely weird and inappropriate.

My dad never ever alluded to fancying anyone ever this has just made me realise. Likewise though I've never had a crush on a celeb etc and even when I was a child never fancied boy bands or anything. Think we must be a bit weird.

mamaduckbone · 06/01/2025 07:52

I really don't know actually, although it was easy enough to come up with my mum's on the previous thread.
He did watch a lot of holiday programmes (even though we only ever went to wales), so maybe he had a thing for Judith Chalmers😅

Lollygaggle · 06/01/2025 07:55

Felicity Kendall in the Good Life.

Ahhhhhbisto · 06/01/2025 07:57

Debbie Harry and Belinda Carlisle for my Dad. Totally opposite than sexually open household!

TaranFollt · 06/01/2025 08:06

Cher

Wildywondrous · 06/01/2025 08:06

Felicity Kendal and the brunette from Abba

That's just an opinion that you hold on how men should behave in relationships. It doesn't translate to being "very sexually open" or "sexually inappropriate". I actually think it's weird and inappropriate that you would try to label families engaging in light hearted chat about such matters in such an unpleasant way.

Pans People
Legs & Co
Any “leggy blonde” 🤮

LadybirdDaphne · 06/01/2025 08:09

Jet from Gladiators, Jane Seymour as Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, brunettes from ABBA and Baywatch. Brunettes with big bums in general.

IWFH · 06/01/2025 08:13

Why has nobody mentioned Diana Rigg playing Emma Peel?

Clawdy · 06/01/2025 08:15

Marilyn Monroe. Then years later, Felicity Kendall.

SallyWD · 06/01/2025 08:23

My dad has never once mentioned being attracted to another woman. Obviously I'm sure he has been but he never mentioned it. My mum used to mention a couple of actors she found attractive.

justusandthecat · 06/01/2025 08:30

My dad's love of Suzi Quatro is as strong today as it was when he was 16.

IfUCantDance · 06/01/2025 08:33

I’m definitely not from a sexually open household 😅 My dad’s crushes usually came to light in different ways. Sometimes it might be because a certain film was suggested to watch and he might say “if Meg Ryan’s in it, I’m happy to watch 😃”, or my mum might have made a joke about Jennifer Aniston being single after she split with Brad Pitt.

It was never said or done in a graphic sexualised way, although I appreciate for others it sounds like it might have been a bit more like that with talk of legs and bums.

Sophia Loren.

Clawdy · 06/01/2025 09:16

"Sexually open household" ?! No way! When Marilyn Monroe died, and the tv news reported it, my dad looked really shocked and sad, and my mum whispered to me "He always had a bit if a crush on her!"

LaDeeDaDeeDa · 06/01/2025 09:36

Katie Boyle.

Deathraystare · 06/01/2025 09:59

Mum would say but Dad never did!

My late Dad was never really interested in anyone but my Mum. They were really devoted. However, he would always stop his crossword or sudoku and temporarily fold up the newspaper if Liza Goddard appeared in anything on telly.

I met her when I worked in a cafe where panto rehearsal actors were having lunch. She was absolutely lovely.
