I don’t know who anyone is, anymore

Does anybody else not understand popular culture?

I do a bit of MN and I look at the Daily Mail online (please stay with me), and sometimes I watch programmes like Strictly and Masterchef and … I don’t know who any one is.

Molly-Mae
Tommy Fury
Zara McDermott
Sam
Pete from strictly with the tattoos
someone called Maud who he might have been in a relationship with

What can I do to understand this better? How do these people become so important?

I would carry on as you are and not bother.

Nobiggerthanyourhand · 04/01/2025 09:31

The Kardashians completely passed me by

They make money on social media. It’s what you have to do to be famous these days.

I’ve given up watching reality tv because it enrages me.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2025 09:34

You could just google the people to find out who they are?

Optigan · 04/01/2025 09:34

I don't think there is a need to 'understand it'. We all choose the entertainment we enjoy and become familiar with the personalities who feature in it; we all like different things. If you're interested in the people you've listed, there must be tons of information online about them; it's probably possible to follow them on social media.

Checkedpajamas · 04/01/2025 09:34

I don't know who any of them are either and it worries me not one jot....

I know who all those who you listed because I used to watch Love Island and read celeb magazines up till a few years ago. But I don't know anyone from the more recent series. I don't know a lot of new musicians and who sings what. And those I do know is just because of my kids. They like Sabrina Carpenter and people like that so I have some sort of idea but I haven't a clue who a lot of influencers are. I had never heard of GK Barry before she went on I'm a Celeb.

MrsSethGecko · 04/01/2025 09:36

I don't know who they are either, other than having seen their names. I don't think that not knowing who reality TV people are makes you ignorant.

PheasantPluckers · 04/01/2025 09:36

Love Island dross mainly. You're better off not knowing!

You don't need to know about them. They don't do anything important and they make no difference to your life whatsoever. I don't understand why anyone wants to follow them. Completely pointless!

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 04/01/2025 09:37

Do you need to know who they are?
Can you enjoy the programmes you like if you don't know who these people are?

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 04/01/2025 09:38

My hairdresser is the same age as me (early 40s) and she knows I no longer want the magazines if I’m getting my hair coloured. I usually take a book or do crochet. I explained a while ago there’s no point because I don’t know who the ‘celebs’ are. Most of them are off reality TV, so if you don’t watch the shows you wouldn’t know! I believe Tommy Fury is a boxer with a reality TV show? Honestly I think it’s okay not to know.

DaphneLaurel · 04/01/2025 09:39

If you don't want to be ignorant your time would probably be better spent learning about world events and global politics, rather than who some random celebrity is.

Nobiggerthanyourhand · 04/01/2025 09:32

… but I don’t want to be ignorant @barbarahunter

So Google them.

Then you will know.

HarryBlackberry1 · 04/01/2025 09:41

I'm with you OP. I never know who these people are. To be honest I don't think I want to. They all seem a bit vapid and lack any substance. All full of botox and fillers. Famous for nothing.

pizzaHeart · 04/01/2025 09:42

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2025 09:34

You could just google the people to find out who they are?

This^ is what I do. Then I know who they are in a way and carry on not bothering about them. I don’t read Daily mail as such and just scrolled down entertainment news on other outlets.

RobinHood19 · 04/01/2025 09:43

You don’t have to like / follow the same “personalities” other people do.

I have very niche interests where it comes to music, culture, TV. Doesn’t mean I’m ignorant. It’s just that I like different material than the person next to me, and that’s normal. The same way they don’t understand some things I watch or like.

Vitriolinsanity · 04/01/2025 09:45

As far as I can help, these are people that "take to X, formally known as Twitter" or "take to Instagram" to "update their fans" about everything they do in the live long day.

It helps if you have a dicey partner with whom you can break and and reconcile with daily, or enjoy holidays in Dubai, or your mum is on hand to "pap" you whenever you "flaunt" yourself in a "jaw dropping" outfit to "stun" your fans.

Nobiggerthanyourhand · 04/01/2025 09:31

And was your life affected by this in any way? Mine wasn’t.

Chocolately · 04/01/2025 09:46

Consider yourself fortunate OP. You definitely don't need to know about these people. It's all fodder.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/01/2025 09:47

I don't think there's any shame in not knowing. Just smile when these people are mentioned - unless anyone wants to engage you in deep conversation about them (although, why would they?) Just don't do what an ex of mine used to do and make ignorance a character-trait - he'd bellow 'oo'sat then? Never 'eard of them!' about just about anyone in the media, which, for some reason, even if I didn't know them either, would irritate me beyond understanding. I think it was because he tried to make himself seem too important to be bothered to find out.
