Were they actually present at the time of the vote?

littledrummergirls · 08/01/2025 23:29

My best guess would be that the amendment was so badly written- designed more to score political points and damage the bill rather than actually being a genuine attempt to do the right thing by the country, that those opposing it would be paraded by the likes of Musk as being supporters of rape.

Obviously this is bollocks and a sign of the juvenile, point scoring, pathetic shit the the conservative party is shovelling, however, the amendment was not going to pass, so why give more ammunition unnecessarily?

Jess Phillips has balls of steel.

BIossomtoes · 08/01/2025 23:31

Very plausible @littledrummergirls. That makes perfect sense.

I don't know, maybe they had a good reason to be absent/not vote which is why I was asking the question.

Yes, I wondered whether something came up at short notice that meant they couldn't be there. It does seem odd. Maybe we will find out tomorrow.

I wonder if Zuckerberg is beginning to regret his decision...

Jess Phillips has balls of steel 👍

But apparently on Mumsnet tweeting stuff that puts her at physical risk is democracy, free speech or hurty words. 😡

And suggesting that she's in danger is mocked and minimised.

Notonthestairs · 09/01/2025 07:48

Phillips was dehumanised by some sections a long time ago.

There are plenty of politicians I take a dim view of but I certainly wouldn't dismiss threats of violence to them or their families.

It should be possible to disagree with a politician without being casual about their safety. That would have gone without saying in previous decades.

I'm wondering who Musk is talking to about removing Starmer as PM.

Notonthestairs · 09/01/2025 07:50

the Reuters story was first reported in the FT but I dont have access to it.

Zonder · 09/01/2025 08:51

It's clear he doesn't believe in democracy.

Notonthestairs · 09/01/2025 08:56

It's not just him though. I'd like to know who is advising him.

Wasn't Brexit all about independence from unelected bureaucrats?

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2025 09:02

only when it's the wrong kind of foreign

Hehe Exploding Heads right on the money there.

I do wonder whether Musk is talking to British nationals about "removing" Starmer.

I'm not hinting at Farage. I'm not sure he's that stupid.

Efacsen · 09/01/2025 09:17

It's a bit of a click-baity headline with little of substance in the article - just says he's 'taking advice from his allies' - not exactly surprising?

Notonthestairs · 09/01/2025 09:20

Ah. I'll remove my tinfoil hat in that case!

(Although I'd still like to know who the allies are)

Andrew Tate?

Free speech champion Liz Truss is asking Starmer to stop making political claims about her and has sent a cease and desist letter over claim she ‘crashed the economy’ …

A bit like 'hurty words' posters getting upset by the words 'far right'

She must think she has a chance of being PM again in the future 🤣

Maybe that is Muski's plan, the return of Liz Truss

PandoraSox · 09/01/2025 10:25

Truss really is a fruitloop, isn't she?

Lyannaa · 09/01/2025 10:30

She is! People have been saying she crashed the economy since it happened. Members of the public were so angry about what she did, they stood outside number 10 shouting 'Get out of office'.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2025 10:37

She is going to be busy sending letters (watch your post Pandora)

Kathleen Brooks, research director at broker XTB, says no doubt UK gilts (govt debt) market is experiencing “crisis in confidence”.

But adds we’re “not in a Liz Truss style moment” b/c pension funds have changed structures so they’re less exposed to rapid & unexpected rise in gilt yields.
