Excellent at reading aloud. Very sound on atheism.

What has he done to be knighted, ffs?

Awful that Kevin Sinfield was overlooked.

I can't think of many who have done more for charity these past couple of years and for such a massively worthy cause.😥

Delighted for the sub postmasters though although a shame only a few were selected.

Stephen Fry marrying a 27 year old when he was 57 just makes me think sleaze bag. The age gap was bigger than Elliot's age! I feel the same if it's a male/female relationship.

sunbum · 31/12/2024 17:07

Thst and his voracious rent boy habit which i saw plemty of evidence of in the 90s, no idea if still in place.

I remember liking older men as a teenager and those experiences have made me very against any relationship with a clear power imbalance. Don’t care about the sex of either person, the age gap is the issue.

Boredlass · 31/12/2024 17:25

Far more than Southgate. It’s laughable that he got one

derxa · 31/12/2024 17:34

David Beckham fully deserves a knighthood and I’m not an England supporter.

Yes he's a very creepy character.

Why does Beckham deserve one? Not being glass, I genuinely don’t know.

I'm no fan of Myleene Class but my god, my heart broke for her the first (and second and third ) time I heard her talk about miscarriage. It seems she was so frustrated at some of the systemic issues that she and other mothers face/ faced (eg no medical investigation until three miscarriages or more) that she spoke out before she was what society might deem 'ready'. It reminded me of that adage 'speak truth to power, even if your voice shakes'.

I think the changes she campaigned for with Olivia Blake MP were really meaningful and will have a positive impact for women going through miscarriage and baby loss in the future. Much more honours-worthy than some!

Do you just get one eventually for being deemed a "national treasure"? I don't like him but can never quite articulate why.

Same here...although he did once say something nasty to a friend of mine so that influences my opinion.

really? 🤮

ODFOx · 31/12/2024 18:50

@SwedishEdith

I'm okay with Southgate getting one. England has been its most s I'm okay with Southgate getting one. England has been its most successful for years under him. He must have done something right his job.
Fixed that for you.
I think that if we can justify honours for people doing their job then we can also justify them for people using their celebrity for raising money and awareness for charity instead of just to get free stuff.

ButteryBiscuitBalonz · 31/12/2024 18:52

Southgate deserves nowt. It was down to pure luck England got as far as they did in the Euros.

And writing a comedy play about paedophilia in a boys prep school, just confirmed it..

Mumsnet is full of women who say age gaps make no difference-you are certain to be shot down if you challenge an age gap between adults. Particularly if the woman is older.

Not a huge fan of Stephen Fry, but I think many men of his age who went to boarding school would have experienced sexual assault - it's probably Fry's way of coping with the experience. Gallows humour perhaps.

I think Gareth Southgate deserves his honour - most successful England manager for decades, but also because he achieved it while being a thoroughly decent man, speaking up against racism, encouraging his young team, who flourished under his managership. Behaved with humility and grace in the face of a horrible backlash after England's losses. Showed it's possible to be a great leader in sport without being an arrogant bully.

This.
