Excellent at reading aloud. Very sound on atheism.

What has he done to be knighted, ffs?

A lot of non-celebs get honours as well, but don’t make the headlines.

Mespher · 31/12/2024 15:29

The non celebs do a lot more for theirs and probably hold down a full time job as well.

MyBirthdayMonth · 31/12/2024 15:30

VacuumPacked · 31/12/2024 15:19

an excellent Jeeves, though, perfect

I think that was as much to do with ideal casting as innate talent, as was his portrayal of Oscar Wilde.

Reetpetitenot · 31/12/2024 15:33

I think Gareth Southgate deserves his honour - most successful England manager for decades, but also because he achieved it while being a thoroughly decent man, speaking up against racism, encouraging his young team, who flourished under his managership. Behaved with humility and grace in the face of a horrible backlash after England's losses. Showed it's possible to be a great leader in sport without being an arrogant bully.

Lots of users are rich guys!

He wasn't rich who she married.

CurlewKate · 31/12/2024 15:34

Gareth Southgate has at least achieved stuff. Stephen Fry irritated me and n particular because he appears to have wasted so much potential. He is clever, articulate, seems to have sound principles in many, although not all areas, is prepared to speak out on important issues but just doesn't DO anything!

Also, Mylene Klass, what has she done?

Married a rich guy, bragged about that wealth, had some kids, talked about the importance of music in schools? Must be something else? Surely?

Campaigned for miscarriage awareness.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/12/2024 15:38

sunbum · 31/12/2024 15:21

And she can't do that much as I had no idea, despite having experienced miscarriage and having lots of friends who have.

Well if you knew about it, no doubt she'd be accused of bragging about it instead of just getting on with it quietly

David Bowie… Danny Boyle…j b priestly…Jim broadbent… french & Saunders… alexi sayle…aldous Huxley…l s lowery…Benjamin zepheriah…can you see the connection?

I may be being thick but I can't see the connection. I was going with "they're all dead" but then realised that doesn't fit.

What a strange thread- what would you like him to have done? His Knighthood is for his services to various charities and raising awareness for the issues associated with those.

Most of the honours are given for significant services given to various causes and sectors like Science, Art, Literature, Sport, Entertainment etc. There's not actually lots of 'ordinary people' with full time jobs getting a Knighthood and doing more than this - don't know where that idea is from? Most of the Honours are given to people who are at the forefront of their field, whatever that might be and in a position to make a significant wider difference in that area- that is why quite a few of them are well known figures.

Nanny0gg · 31/12/2024 15:51

The explanations for the awards were in the papers. Many were for their charitable work

InformEducateEntertain · 31/12/2024 15:51

Stephen Fry is president of Mind and has done a lot to help decrease stigma over serious mental health issues.

It is possible that others have done more/ worked harder etc but by dint of being famous and talking about it he has achieved cut through that many others haven't.

I'm all for famous people using their fame to improve the lot of the non famous.

Lwrenn · 31/12/2024 15:54

Unpopular opinion but I think Stephen Fry seems an arse.
And Myleene Class irritated me arguing about “old ladies freezing in mansions” when she didn’t seem to give a fuck about old ladies freezing in council flats.
FYI, I’m not a fan of any old person going cold regardless of their bank balance. But I’m pretty sure those sat on properties worth millions are in a better position to find ways to keep warm than those who don’t have mansions. But again, I’m not keen on anyone going cold. Especially the elderly.

Mistletoewench · 31/12/2024 16:12

SabreIsMyFave · 31/12/2024 15:21

But plenty of people do things for various charities, and community groups, (and their community in general.) What makes Myleene so special? Confused

Is it just because she is famous? Seems like it. If she did whatever it is she does, and she wasn't famous, she would very likely get no recognition from anyone.

Honestly, I’m with you on this. Maybe I am
just old and grumpy now, but honestly these new year honours just feel outdated now.
why oh why in this climate do we have these outdated awards, all feels a bit medieval.

WalterdelaMare · 31/12/2024 16:27

I can’t stand Mylene Klass. There’s something deeply unlikeable about her. This honours system is an absolute nonsense. I have no respect for anyone that accepts one. Nigella went up hugely in my estimation after she refused one.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/12/2024 16:27

Anyone can nominate anyone for an honour. If you know someone who you think deserves an honour, why not nominate them? People in the public eye do have the advantage of their work being more visible. Work deserving of an honour for "ordinary folk" needs bringing to the attention of the honours committee.

My old boss got a MBE for services to her church , scouting and her profession. She was nominated by senior managers.

One of my colleagues was nominated by the people he volunteered with in a disability sport.

Dont forget the skechers adverts. A public service.

Somewhat undermining the 'awareness' part of campaigning?

Justleaveitblankthen · 31/12/2024 16:50

I'm just glad Mr Smug still doesn't have his 😂
Sit down Beckham!

Nigella turned down an award :

"I'm not saving lives and I'm not doing anything other than something I absolutely love."

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 31/12/2024 16:54

God yes agree about Beckham, what does he think he’s done to deserve one? Support dodgy countries who play football? Kiss arse to Prince William and the King? Look nice in a cardi?

Charity is just used as a convenient reason for most of them despite lots of other ordinary people doing much more but not being well known.
