I bloody love British weather

Yesterday I went for a walk up a local hill. It was grey and cold, and really foggy at the top, not raining but so much moisture in the air that you could feel the drops of it on your face as you walked and my clothes were soaking by the time I finished. And I bloody loved it. I was too ill to run in it yesterday but felt better today so went for a quick run on the hill. This misty, grey, damp weather is my absolute favourite to run in. It is my Christmas weather. Every Christmas day I run up that hill and its usually weather like this.

I love British weather, varied, atmospheric, rarely too hot.

Surely I am not the only one to feel like this? Surely someone else must genuinely like our weather too!

I whinge about it ( incessantly 😁) but yes, I love it, mostly. I love the variety, and the tradeoff of the long winter nights for the long summer nights.

Sometimes the gray days get me down though.

SoftPillowAllNight · 26/12/2024 14:30

I seem to be one of the few weirdos who hates summer and loves all the other seasons instead. I love the dark evenings, crisp mornings and cozy indoors. Glad to have found my people!

Me too! Except I don't hate summer, but it probably is my least favourite season, and 'too hot' weather is my least favourite weather. I love the dark evenings, crisp mornings and cosy indoors too! I like the dark.

I love it too OP, your hill run is my idea of heaven. Wouldn't live in a tropical country for £10m. Or a dramatic hot/ cold country either. Love the icy drizzle! Grin

I’m sorry but this foggy dampness is just horrible! I don’t mind it being cold, I don’t even mind it being freezing but it’s been wet here all week even though it hasn’t actually rained.

Delatron · 26/12/2024 14:45

I strangely enjoyed my run today. Agree it was atmospheric. Much prefer summer though. I disagree that our weather is varied. It seems to be mainly mild and wet. With a variation of about 5-10 degrees…

I’d love to live somewhere that had proper snow and more variation between seasons. I agree our summers are not too hot and I don’t envy southern European countries where is bits 40 degrees. High 20s would be nice though…

Waterboatlass · 26/12/2024 14:47

I don't love it everyday (white skies are a bit lame) but I love the atmosphereriness and variety. Stormy coastal seas are a delight (not for fishermen, granted),as much as hot summer days there.

TheGrinchsBallsack · 26/12/2024 14:50

I love it too.

Love mist and fog and rainy days.

Love the chilly nights so it's easier to sleep too.

Hot sweaty days and nights are just horrible. I honestly don't know why people like these hot places.

SerafinasGoose · 26/12/2024 14:53

The mist and the rain are beautiful. I also love the diffused light of spring and the long hours of daylight in summer.

My favourite sights in the world are a beautiful sunset, moonrise with the moon low in the sky, and the sun or moon sparkling on water. Christmas Eve this year saw the most spectacular sunset over our local river.

The only days I really dislike are those of the lowering sky and heavy atmosphere - like a perpetual twilight where it never gets properly light all day. For this reason November is my least favourite month.

British weather really does have a lot to recommend it, I agree.

TobiasForgesContactLense · 26/12/2024 14:53

Yes. So misty this morning but up on the top of the hill we were so warm we striped down to t shirts. The cloud inversion was amazing.

The variety is great but not too extreme.

bluetonguegiraffe · 26/12/2024 14:55

High 20s would be nice though…

Oh God NO! High 20s is far, far too hot for me! I hate it!

I'm generally pretty content with British weather as I personally find anything over 23° too hot to enjoy, especially when trying to work or exercise. But what has bugged me this last year is it feels as though we have had a LOT of grey skies and a definite lack of sunshine/blue sky. Grey days are depressing after a while. But I enjoy the variation in temperature and seasons that we get here.

TooMuchRedMaybe · 26/12/2024 15:00

I think it can be pretty but it gets quite depressing after a while for me. I used to live in the UK and I don’t miss the dampness of it but the odd foggy day is nice.

We went to our local National Trust park this morning and it was incredibly foggy and atmospheric. I loved it. We came home damp and slightly muddy. Change into some comfy lounge wear, have a cup of tea and a mince pie, what could be cosier? I love this time of year for that.

FigTreeInEurope · 26/12/2024 15:10

We left yorkshire for southern italy. With all my love, you are insane!

boatyardblues · 26/12/2024 15:21

I don’t love leaden grey days, horizontal drizzle on a windy day or the plentiful rain we get in our part of the UK. However, I see these as a necessary trade-off for beautiful bright spring days, crisp autumn walks in the woods, frosty mornings or our long summer days. I also love that our country is so green and abundant. I couldn’t live somewhere hot like southern Europe. That kind of overbearing heat would make me far more miserable than the UK’s grey skies or rain.

FatFiatMultiplaWhopper · 26/12/2024 15:24

I love the seasons and even the rain. I'd hate to live somewhere that's the same all the time.

You aren't alone. I love rain, mist, grey days, long nights. Spring dampness.

Not a fan of the sun.

AutumnNymph · 26/12/2024 15:40

Me, me!! I have found my people.

Tooty78 · 26/12/2024 15:44

The Christmas lights look so much more twinkly when it's dull outside!

Sinkintotheswamp · 26/12/2024 15:48

No.
It's too chilly and damp for me to run nicely. I can plod along but I need some warmth on my bones and in my lungs to really crack on.
We need some cold, sunny days so my laundry can dry too.

Yeah it’s a bit endless. I wouldn’t mind if it was one off in between some nice sunny, frosty days. I do miss the sun. Don’t mind cold for winter.
