Has anyone ever found out that they're taller than they are?

I have always thought I was 5'7. I had a drs appointment where they took height and weight and I'm 5'8.5! Has anyone else ever has this happen to them? I feel so tall all of a sudden 😂

A nurse once told me I was 5'8" because she converted the cm measurement. The cm measurement put me at 5 feet 8 inches and 15/16 or whatever the smallest unit is!

I go by 5'9" these days.

Deathraystare · 18/12/2024 08:06

NO! Opposite!

I was in Boots on the weighing machine and I seemed to have shrunk by two inches. However, when at the doctors I was again 5ft 4 ins. Of course I then realised I had not been standing up straight in Boots, I was sort of crouched ready to grab my bag if someone tried to steal it!!!

Poor posture is a very common reason for people to 'lose' height as they age - especially now we all have smart phones and laptops. My fathers family had a history of 'Dowagers Hump' and he was a stickler for making us children all walk 'properly'. He was also desperate to be 6ft tall but only measured 5ft 11.5 unless he really stood tall so that's what he did Grin It's worked as he's nearly 80 and is still as upright as a soldier despite never being in the military.

Yes, always thought I was 5’6. Nope, I’m actually 5’6 and a half.

Mirenamirena · 18/12/2024 09:01

After starting Pilates, I was measured at the doctors and found I’d gained an inch in height. That was nearly 20 years ago so I could well have lost it again now.

Narkacist · 18/12/2024 09:04

You’re taller in the morning than in the evening too (there was a ride at a theme park that my daughter was tall enough for in the morning but didn’t quite make it in the afternoon)

Oblomov24 · 18/12/2024 09:07

Always knew I was small. Broke my back in 4 places, plus old age menopause shrinkage aswell, means I've lost 3 inches in the last year. Nearly classified as a midget. Really pissed off.

I'm 5'10". I've been measured loads of times. Definitely 5'10" but people (mainly men) constantly argue with me telling me I'm 6'. It gets very tiresome. No mate I'm not 6' and nor are you!

Haha! I've had this my whole life! I'm just under 5'11" but have had countless (shorter) men tell me I must be 6' because they are 5'11" and I'm taller than them 🙄some men just can't cope with a taller woman!

GretchenWienersHair · 18/12/2024 09:16

I’ve always been 5”2, until about 3 years ago when I started measuring at 5”3 every time I needed to be measured. I think I must have had a late growth spurt 😄

It’s funny because people who have known me a long time always make short jokes (which doesn’t bother me at all), but people who are newer to my life are often surprised when they find out I’m “only” 5”3 because apparently I look taller. So strange.

BellsandWhistlesGalore · 18/12/2024 09:18

The nurse who did my smear used a longer speculum as I'm taller than she thought. I'm 5 foot 3. I must look really small lol.

charabang · 17/12/2024 12:13

I'm 57 and have shrank with age. Always was 5'6 but last measured at 5'5". I always wanted to be 5'3 so hoping I live long enough to shrink that far.

Why do you want to be smaller?

ladygindiva · 18/12/2024 09:27

Kaminari · 17/12/2024 10:51

I've always been 5'3, I found out I'm fucking 5'1 at the doctors the other day. I made them check twice to be sure!
I want to be tall! 😒

Similar here, I discovered recently I was 5'2 I'd always said I was 5'3 and a half.... I'm sure I was that when I was measured as a 16 year old 😭

AugustFagerudd · 18/12/2024 09:44

I wish it happened to me😂 I'd be rocking that extra inch

Aparecium · 18/12/2024 11:31

I had a growth spurt in my early twenties. I had a year abroad, eating well and exercising a lot, and when I came home most of the clothes I had left behind did not quite fit me.

It took me ages to discover that I had actually grown half a shoe size and 2cm in height!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you've lost height as you aged you should get your bone density measured. Loss of height results from compression fractures in the spine.

But she's taller, not shorter.

Aren't we taller in the morning or something? Not that much though, I suppose.
I'd guess either an incorrect measure at the doctor's or wearing shoes.

So do all tall women have longer vaginas? Is everything always in proportion?

Ha, yes, I get this too! Lots of men insisting I’m “really tall” and “must be taller than 5’8”, because I’m taller than them.

Nope, I’m definitely 5’8 and they’re shortarses.

😂 You must have thought what, that doesn’t make sense at all.

I know the 1st speculum didn't touch my cervix ! I've had a vaginal birth so maybe I'm stretched ?
Also midwives say the size of the feet correlate with the pelvis

😂 Longer vaginas, l think every vagina is different, being tall or shorter in height, doesn’t make a difference.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you've lost height as you aged you should get your bone density measured. Loss of height results from compression fractures in the spine.

I was told that it was the cartilage tissue in between each vertebra that becomes compressed, not the bones themselves.

Unless someone younger is at high risk of osteoporosis or they are already well over 50, then it is very unlikely to be bone density problem. They are keeping a close eye on mine, as I had a premature menopause, hence me knowing a little bit about it.

So, why the longer speculum?

UndeniablyGenX · 18/12/2024 18:14

I grew an inch taller after having a hysterectomy. I was quite pleased.

Dcbjgfdh · 18/12/2024 18:16

Yes. I was always 5 ft 3, then during my first pregnancy they said I was 5 ft 5 and every time I’ve been measured since they’ve read it as 5 ft 5. Before this happened my DH thought he was shrinking because he said I seemed taller!

MagnificentTrousers · 18/12/2024 18:22

Bluecrumble · 17/12/2024 13:03

My dad always thought he was 6 ft 2 inches, but after having intense physio for a back / shoulder injury his posture improved and clearly for the first time he actually stood straight and measured in at 6ft 4 inches.

My Dad has always been 6' 4" - he was measured recently at the GP and was told he was 5' 11". He's 82 and I know that some people do lose some height over the years, but unless you've had your feet chopped off, no-one loses 5 inches!

I think the nurse must have been drunk - I measured him at just over 6' 3"
