I accidentally didn't pay in Tesco - what do I do?

I scanned everything at self checkout but just checking my bank account now it's not gone out! I must have forgotten to pay? What do I do? Will I get in trouble?

I don't see how u could have forgotten? Surely it beeps and freaks out? Unless you paid but the transaction failed

When did you do the shop?

caniriskit · 12/12/2024 20:04

6 this evening
Also surprised it wouldn't have been picked up but there's no record on my bank account

That happened to me, I took everything back they were shocked and we rescanned everything, the original never went through.

SomethingDifferentBloomed · 12/12/2024 20:06

Did you pay on a different card?

LeopardPrintIsNeutral · 12/12/2024 20:07

Maybe it’s pending

Sunflower1650 · 12/12/2024 20:07

Did you get a receipt?

caniriskit · 12/12/2024 20:07

I thought I paid by phone

It happened to me in Morrisons a while back.

Absolutely no idea how, I assume the card machine must’ve alerted me to insert card and enter pin and I swear I genuinely didn’t notice. Can’t think of anything else that could’ve happened.

It was about £16 worth of shopping, must admit I didn’t lose much sleep about it.

verycloakanddaggers · 12/12/2024 20:11

When I did this I went back to tell them.

Anonym00se · 12/12/2024 20:12

I bought a load of cards in Clinton’s and paid (or so I thought). The lady behind the counter even asked if I wanted the receipt. When I got home home I saw a notification on my phone to say the payment had been declined. The shop would have been shut by the time I returned so I told DH I’d go back in the morning. He said “You bloody won’t, we spend a fortune in there on their extortionate cards!” I’m too scared to go back in now in case I’m pegged as a fugitive.

Whatcanido12345 · 12/12/2024 20:32

I did the same thing in Morrison’s last week. I scanned my shopping and tapped my card but no payment was taken. I didn’t realise until a couple of days later.
It’s easily done. Less easily rectified in my experience.

Did you try to rectify it?

Sometimes Tesco takes a few days for it to go out my account on the scanner

Yes I did. I had scanned my loyalty card and thought they would be able to see what items I had, and I could pay for them.
I returned to the store, which is about 15 miles away and spoke to the woman on customer services. She was horrible, said she had to get a manager who would decide about reporting to the police and banning me from the store.
Fortunately for me she was as incompetent as she was nasty and she hadn’t taken details, so I just left whilst she was getting him. I still don’t know if they can check the details on the loyalty card.

ARealitycheck · 12/12/2024 21:01

With the profits tesco have I hope it has been missed. Consider it a Christmas present from them.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/12/2024 21:01

My card was once declined at the self service and I didn’t notice, so walked off merrily with my shopping. A Tesco worker ran after me and caught me up in the car park and told me to come back and pay. I was completely oblivious!

mindutopia · 12/12/2024 21:09

I would give it a bit of time to come through. I would assume it just hasn’t flagged up in your banking app yet. That said, practically speaking, it would be a real ballache to take it all back if it’s a full shop and you’ve already put it all away.

Topee · 12/12/2024 21:10

When you go in next time it won’t let you pick up a scanner and will tell you to go to customer services. They’ll have a record of the transaction and you’ll be able to pay.

It's a mistake not intentional by you. Just forget it and enjoy the free shopping. They won't miss it with the profit they make!

TreeAttack · 12/12/2024 21:11

I had this at an m&s a year or two ago, I messaged them on twitter or fb I can’t remember which to tell them what I had accidentally done and ask how to resolve it.

theduchessofspork · 12/12/2024 21:12

It's probably pending, but anyway forget about it - it was a mistake and the value doesn't justify the time and hassle to take it all back

unlikelychump · 12/12/2024 21:12

I've been delivered 2 parcels from superdrug instead of one. Ive been trying to return it but the chat bot can't deal with it. I'm hoping they contact me. I don't want 2.

You can donate it to beauty banks. It is of course good to not want to inadvertently steal but you will not get paid for your time, so there's no point doing it

TY78910 · 12/12/2024 21:15

@Whatcanido12345 that customer service lady sounds silly. How could you accuse someone who's gone back to the shop to say 'I realised I haven't paid, can I do it now?' Of shoplifting? Also police don't come out for anything under £70 so she's just being a d*ck!
