I accidentally didn't pay in Tesco - what do I do?

I scanned everything at self checkout but just checking my bank account now it's not gone out! I must have forgotten to pay? What do I do? Will I get in trouble?

I find it sad the amount of people who think it is okay to not try and rectify this. Would you judge a shop lifter differently. You need to try and put it right. Just email HQ and explain. They will either say don't worry or tell you how you can pay. Although if you have no receipt it could be tricky.

I don't find it sad. The majority of these incidents are on the self scanners, which these companies brought in to cut labour costs, whatever they might say. Whilst I wouldn't condone someone intentionally stealing, customers are only human and mistakes are going to happen. They also often have only one staff member overlooking all the self checkouts. I'm sure these big shops know they are going to lose some money this way, if they were that unhappy about it they could always employ more people to keep a better eye on things!

Went back and paid- they were very appreciative

I was shocked as she was so nasty. I had already decided that I wouldn’t be shopping there again as I had been overcharged ( or would have been) and not for the first time and their customer service needs a different name.
I slightly regret not waiting to see the manager in the hope of him being more sensible, but TBH I was a bit worried. I am no spring chicken and have never even had a parking ticket, I didn’t want a criminal record.

You couldn’t have been charged with theft as the 1968 Theft Act says you have to intend to permanently deprive someone of something and there you are in the store, trying to pay… it might have been rather unpleasant if you’d had to wait for the police though. I would imagine the average busy copper would have given the manager short shrift bothering him with an honest mistake!

When you go in next time it won’t let you pick up a scanner and will tell you to go to customer services. They’ll have a record of the transaction and you’ll be able to pay.

Yes. Ignore other bad advice. This is what will happen, but you’re better off addressing it before that happens as it’s up to the store’s discretion.
Same thing happened to me and they were OK once I explained, however the same store were not so understanding with a friend. The difference being that I went in saying this is what happened and my friend hadn’t realised and tried to deny it.

scoutingfortwirls · 13/12/2024 09:35

Go back. I once did this, Apple Pay didn't work so I went back a couple of hours later. The security guard had saved my pictures as a suspected shoplifter for next time!

That's appalling customer service - you went back to pay and she threathened you with the police!

I hope someone from Morrisons sees this and follows up, she was dreadful. I thought the issue was going to be that they couldn't work out a way to take thenpayment.

The first one didn't say Morrisons. I doubt it was.

Not necessarily when I went back when it happened to me took my club card number and checked the zappy scan machine that I’d used and there was no record of it.

Excellent

I can imagine that honest mistakes like this happen quite often and are counted in with shoplifting loss, which is really high since the cost of living crisis. The answer for the shop are to employ more staff.

ilikecatsandponies · 13/12/2024 09:39

I once forgot to pay in Tesco - did the self checkout and my card didn't scan but I thought it did. The security guard ran after me as I waddled my pregnant body off across the car park so I just apologised and went back and paid.

No I don't think so. You want to do the work of a large multinational business for it do you?
If I accidentally walked out of the local greengrocer with something I'd go back and try and pay. But I'm not lining some multimillionaires pockets for them. If I genuinely attempted to pay for the items and their machine didn't work or heir security didn't pick up on it then that's on them. I'm not doing extra work to make exploitative people richer. Same with the banks. If I tapped my card and it went thru but it's not shown up on my bank so the money hasn't gone out for some reason.. I'm not doing the banks work for them.
I do my bit when I attempt to pay. Once I've gone out the shop that's it then.
Obviously if I thought it was going to directly harm someone like it was a small business who it may effect then I'd spend the time sorting it.
But no way would I waste my time an effort on one of these multi billion dollar businesses. They ought to have the money to have sorted that out themselves.

Quite, especially when using the system they are forcing on customers, it's not like they are giving you a choice. It should just work and if it doesn't it's their lookout.

Or they'll accuse you of shoplifting and threaten to call the cops, as happened to a pp. Hardly an incentive to go back, is it?

jessycake · 13/12/2024 09:58

I'm surprised that the the tills can nag you to put your items down in the bagging area and prompt every single thing you do, but not paying and picking up your shopping and going and there is silence . It surely could say sorry your payment didn't go through .

scoutingfortwirls · 13/12/2024 10:07

@thisfilmisboring123 Morrisons

I’m pleased you managed to do this.
Could they find the transaction so you knew how much to pay?
I didn’t realise for 2 days and by that time I couldn’t recall everything.
I am not sure that I’m brave enough to give Morrisons another try. (Maybe their head office might be more reasonable.)

bigkidatheart · 13/12/2024 10:28

I did it at a garage. I paid by contactless, the guy said do you want a receipt I said no, thank you and goodbye.

Got to my destination and checked phone half an hour later and had a pop up from my bank to insert card and enter pin. I was mortified - it was only £10. This was in May and I have avoided that garage ever since in fear they will recognise me 😂

Absolutely.

So often there's a couple of tills jammed up with full large trolley's so everyone else has to join the melé of the self checkouts with at least 6 machines whinging about age restrictions, barcode errors, unexpected items and failing to register that the 20g item is actually in the bagging area, and one poor member of staff going backwards and forwards to appease the disgruntled machines and frustrated customers.

Trying to go back is just entering a "computer says no" wormhole of time and space. I wouldn't self flagellate over a genuine error in a shop that I spend many thousands of pounds in over the years.

RedRiverShore5 · 13/12/2024 10:36

I would probably leave it until next week to see if it comes out, if not then go back or ring them to say you have checked your account and you seem to have not paid for the shopping

LushLemonTart · 13/12/2024 15:01

Op updated she went back and paid.

caniriskit · 12/12/2024 21:55

I appreciate all your messages but still totally confused if to go back or not, especially with the possibility of being threatened with being reported to the police 😱

How about emailing head office? Say you've noticed that a payment for some items you bought has not gone through. Give them the location, date and time and say you're happy to pay if they tell you the cost. Then you can't be accused of anything or end up in an embarrassing position in the shop.

My feelings entirely. Do you for one minute think tesco put self service in for the good of their customers! It's all about their profit margins and people like us being put out of work.
