Do you also find Reddit interface a nightmare?

What a busy platform. So much visual noise and not clear logic of how the different groups subgroups work or user-friendly way to engage. I hate all the silly avatars and can't get my head around the rewards system... what's all this about??? Who needs it???

I posted a couple of times but no one replied (popular topic discussed extensively) except a bot with a page full of forum guidelines and couple of adds. I went onto Reddit to reach out to a wider audience but seem to be wondering around the edges looking for the gate in.

@PiggyPigalle ok. I am going to try this for fun and as an experiment. Suggest a tile along the lines of - 'trump will sort you out Ukraine', sticking it under r/badkarmatrumpwillfixit

Ooh, this thread is useful! I love Reddit but struggle to figure out how it works.

I managed to get myself permanently banned from one of my favourite sub Reddits. Apparently I was too rude about something. I'd totally have got away with it on MN Grin

@IAm16StoneHalloween2024 wow! How did you work out all of this? Where all this 'manual' is written? That's also explain why Reddit is a mess - too many cooks!!! No coherent rules, structure, no consistency.

I don't know how to share the post but if you go to r/personalfinance is the one with questions on SIPP. Still no one replied. Must be Tony's watch again.

This one?

SIPP

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 12/12/2024 01:43

I agree, for things like that always look for the UK version, plus legal advice, policing, cars, houses etc.

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 12/12/2024 01:48

And as for the rules, I have screenshotted where to find them. I’m on the mobile app but I’m sure it’s similar on the desktop version.

Yes, it's completely rubbish and almost unusable. I only go on it to read a thread if Google suggests it. It's way too much effort.

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 12/12/2024 01:52

Here is the UKPersonalFinance sub

https://www.reddit.com/r/UKPersonalFinance/s/gNduj2YUnr

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 12/12/2024 01:55

The rules seem to be straightforward.

I found them the same way but had to scroll down slightly as there’s a link to Citizens Advice and StepChange and their Discord.

And this is the UKFinance sub, you can search for a specific thing within the sub. I searched for ‘SIPP’ and hopefully you can see from the screenshots how to do it.

Just make sure you set it to ‘new’ like the last photo.

Or start your own post obviously.

I love reddit in some ways and hate it in others. It’s really the wild west. As a word of warning I would be careful what you say on there.

It’s very misogynistic. Very American centric. Weirdly both right wing and super woke at the same time.

As each topic is moderated and run independently by all and sundry you do get a lot of power hungry tech savvy weirdos in charge. Your personal details are not protected in the same way as on here (ie. Your IP address), and there is no real ethics when it comes to who can ban who and any recourse for that is non existent.

I was once hacked / attacked very badly through Reddit. Now I use a burner email and am really careful about what I write and where on there. You don’t want to draw the attention of someone nasty unless you have really covered your back with VPNs, burners etc.

Even though I am super careful on there I managed to get banned from a sub last week! An incel posted (on a non incel sub) and every one was taking the piss. I said a very innocuous comment of something along the lines of ‘Wow you really don’t like women’ which was upvoted heavily, agreed with by other commenters and yet I was still banned. No explanation. No recourse. Incel guy lived to tell the tale and was posting the next day on same sub so they weren’t banned.

So just be careful. If in doubt lurk or pretend to be a male 🤣

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 12/12/2024 02:22

Reddit is what you make it. It’s so big and varied you can literally find anything on there.

It’s like saying people are bad, or dark alleyways are bad. Some people are, some aren’t. And don’t walk up dark alleyways 🤷‍♀️.

Here are some subs people might like…

@Craftymam what's a 'burner email' and 'incel sub'? Why do you still bother taking part on this platform as what you describe sounds awful!

@IAm16StoneHalloween2024 thank you for all the useful pointers! How am I supposed to know which sub name is the most relevant. Only now that you mentioned to us 'UK' I see it make sense. I guess I naturally assumed the internet is borderless. On MN we don't ask people only from the UK to comment and I am sure not everyone on here are UK based.

So just that I'm clear, shall I add UK to any topic I want to bring up? I also noticed that when searching a topic so many variations of the same sub are listed, so how to pick the right one?

And btw, why everything is 'sub'? Where are the primary headline conversations? Minefield!!

I don't find Reddit a nightmare, no.

I tend to go into the subreddit I'm interested in and browse or post but I mainly lurk.

I don't tend to go through it from the home page with the different subs all mixed up .

Reddit is best thought of as a collective of loads of subreddits which are the individual forums people can set up on just about anything.

Update - My sub Reddit combining 'Trump' and 'Ukraine' in the topic really kicked off. Some real weirdos commented. I'm
Going to delete this before I am banned for starting WW3!

the same situation arises here on MN, albeit on a much smaller scale, with ppl asking about eg “education in UK”, which simply doesn’t exist.

So if a thread title makes it clear where in the UK they are talking about, the replies are more focussed and relevant.

@IAm16StoneHalloween2024 or anyone who knows, how do I change the location of my subreddit? I need to move it to the UK section but can't work out the process. Thanks

There isn't a UK section. You just need to have UK in your subreddit name.

Are you talking about your finance threads? You cant move it, just restart a new one in the relevant sub. There’s no uk section with every uk sub, they’re all individual you need to just search around for what you want.

re the trump/ukraine comment or thread you posted (it’s not clear?) if you’re not keen id suggest just leaving Reddit, trolling is universally a dick move whether on mumsnet/reddit or any other forum.

EveryDayisFriday · 12/12/2024 07:31

I miss when we could use other readers for reddit. They stopped it a while back and I can barely use it these days.

ThatLoudGoose · 12/12/2024 07:36

I feel the same way, and my Reddit account always gets banned!!!

Craftymam · 12/12/2024 10:44

chazamilami · 12/12/2024 05:24

@Craftymam what's a 'burner email' and 'incel sub'? Why do you still bother taking part on this platform as what you describe sounds awful!

Because like pp says it’s a big place. Some parts are amazing. Some utterly disturbing so avoid those.

All I’m saying is it’s akin to travelling in foreign country where the laws are whatever someone says they are, police non existent or corrupt and there’s no embassy to save you 🤣 So just be careful.

And getting banned is a rite of passage. It’s near impossible to use Reddit and not get banned from somewhere at some point for even no reason.
