Please hit me with suggestions - especially if you can recommend galleries either with a large selection of styles, or an area where there are several close together. It’s for a special birthday trip. I’m stuck for ideas.

Messums - Tisbury, Wilts
20 mins down the A303 is Bruton. Hauser & Wirth is the biggie but there are a few smaller ones. Then there’s The Newt up the road. Book in for lunch & you don’t have to pay for entry. Roman villa & gardens.

I second Paris.

All the galleries in Bath are good. Also Liverpool and the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. The Towner in Eastbourne is great. Also, I loved the municipal gallery in Wolverhampton. I hope that's still open. Birmingham is good too (just reopened after a refit). The quality of our city galleries is so good in England, Scotland and Wales (and NI I'm sure, I've not been there).

Also, Paris! We often go there for the day. Early train, gallery, nice meal in a beautiful traditional brasserie, home again. Obviously that depends where you live, but it's so easy if you can get to St Pancras for an earlyish train.

Wow - thank you all so much for the suggestions. They are all very reachable. I am keeping Paris for a significant birthday, we can warm up with the other suggestions.

Pallant House in Chicester has a very good modern art collection.

The Hastings Contemporary often has some interesting exhibitions on.

Shame they don't share their Bow collection. Apparently it is very good.
