Please hit me with suggestions - especially if you can recommend galleries either with a large selection of styles, or an area where there are several close together. It’s for a special birthday trip. I’m stuck for ideas.

Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford, Bristol or you could stay on south coast and travel to various galleries such as Charleston, Lee Miller’s house.

Manchester Art Gallery, nearish to the Lowry and Whitworth Art Galleries and a train ride from the Liverpool art galleries.

DrLucyVanPelt · 09/12/2024 14:23

I'd suggest Liverpool too- Walker, Tate, Lady Lever over the Mersey, FACT and The Bluecoat

It's a great city to visit in general and loads to do!

DrLucyVanPelt · 09/12/2024 14:24

Liverpool is also quite compact as cities go, and most of these are easily walkable to each other

Hepworth Gallery at Wakefield in West Yorkshire.

snoopysnoooper · 09/12/2024 15:15

You could do Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Hepworth gallery in Wakefield in one trip (and maybe even Leeds Art Gallery too, it is a small one though!).

The Fitzwilliam and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, Ashmolean in Oxford, also Christ Church Picture Gallery, and Modern Art Oxford.

Also not too far from Cambridge Saffron Walden with the Fry Gallery.

If you go to the art fund website, you can put in a location and it will show you what is nearby - not just art, sometimes historic places etc

Summerhillsquare · 09/12/2024 16:29

Hepworth in Wakefield followed by Yorkshire sculpture park.

Baltic in Gateshead with Laing in Newcastle, plus some smaller galleries.

Aknifewith16blades · 09/12/2024 16:38

Paris.

Margate for a mixture of big and smaller independent galleries:

  • Turner contemporary
  • Carl Freedman Gallery
  • TKE studio (Tracey Emin Foundation gallery)
  • Lido Stores Gallery
  • Quench Gallery.

The independent galleries will be open only Wednesday- Saturday.

Deal, Kent also has some interesting independent galleries like the Don't Walk Gallery.

Also places like Glasgow, Edinburgh and Liverpool.

Teenycanary · 09/12/2024 16:40

The Hepworth has some great stuff on right now

Yes it is, but an incredibly short commute from Liverpool. And when you are visiting, like I did, from the South East, it is easier to stay in Liverpool and day trip. Had a thoroughly fabulous short break a few years ago and cannot wait to return to Liverpool (and the Lady Lever). You are obviously a local - has Port Sunlight picked up a bit? I was so looking forward to seeing the village/development and it sadly looked so shabby.

The Fitzwilliam and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, Ashmolean in Oxford, also Christ Church Picture Gallery, and Modern Art Oxford.

I second the Fitwilliam and Kettle's Yard in Cambridge. The Fizrwilliam is a little gem of a musuem, very varied and with a nice shop and café. Kettle's Yard is the former home of a now deceased collector, very much into 20th century and folk art, with paintings, small sculptures, found art, furniture, rugs and so on, all beautifully arranged.

SiobhanSharpe · 09/12/2024 18:19

In Perry Green, Herts, the Henry Moore studios, sculpture gardens and barns are very impressive. They had some Rodins on loan too the last time I went.
It's not too far from Bishop's Stortford.

WhereAreWeNow · 09/12/2024 18:28

How far are you prepared to travel? Edinburgh and Glasgow are both brilliant for an arty trip. Lots of galleries and museums, big and small.

ladybee2 · 09/12/2024 18:39

Compton Verney in South Warwickshire is fabulous.

Hazey19 · 09/12/2024 18:43

Another one for Manchester, Liverpool or Birmingham. The cafe at the Birmingham museum and art gallery is also divine!

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/12/2024 18:44

Pallant House in Chicester has a very good modern art collection.

The Hastings Contemporary often has some interesting exhibitions on.
