Do you think you could kill someone?

In the literal sense of the word - could you end someone’s life?

Taking the legal consequence out of it, I’m wondering, on a moral level, if you think you could/would do it? Do you have that in you?

I appreciate this is very much a “you don’t know until you’re in that situation” question, but I think that if my life was at genuine, serious risk, or if my child was in the same situation, I’d do it without hesitation.

I’d find it physically difficult without a gun (and some training), but mentally I
I’d be capable of it in order to save myself or someone else. In many ways I have little respect for anyone who wouldn’t.

GoodGollyMsMolly · 07/12/2024 03:23

Yes. When I read about eco activists blocking roads when some people were otw to the hospital in emergency, I thought of my dad who had to be rushed through traffic while dying. I'd run them over and not care how many of them died if my family needs medical care 100%.

Jostuki · 07/12/2024 03:35

I wouldn't Jill someone because I hated them as I'm aware that they have children and pets and by killing them I would be hurting innocent relatives and animals.

If I was threatened by a stranger then I would do my utmost to kill them. If there was a burglar in my home I would try and stab them. I would have no qualms about lying afterwards and saying that they had threatened to harm me or my pets etc even if they hadn't.

Yes I definitely could if I had to (doctor) but I would find it hard to live with the guilt for the rest of my life.

Doctor too.. I agree.

NestaArcheron · 07/12/2024 03:37

If someone seriously hurt/tried to hurt my children, DH, nieces/nephews or godchildren, yes. And I wouldn't regret it.

Barleycat · 07/12/2024 04:46

Yes.

AelinAG · 07/12/2024 04:52

I’d imagine so. I’m surprisingly excellent with a gun which would make it easier

Should probably confirm I know this from a shooting range rather than anything more nefarious…my first ever go the gun man told me if I did the FBI test for a firearm I’d have passed with flying colours

Moro93 · 07/12/2024 06:21

I think I could out of self defence or to protect my children or my DH. I mean if it really came down to me/my family or them then I like to think I would try my hardest to survive or protect my loved ones.

I also think if someone abused or killed any of my children then I would really, really want to kill them.

Zanatdy · 07/12/2024 06:25

Probably if I had to, me or them kind of situation

Scooby2024 · 07/12/2024 06:32

I don't want to think of what I would do if someone hurt my DS. I honestly think I could without much hesitation but ONLY in self defence or protection of my DS (or children in general tbh).

Pennyplant19 · 07/12/2024 06:35

People that hurt children and animals - yes.

Well of course

Moglet4 · 07/12/2024 06:43

I think, given that you’re on MN, you know what most of the answers will be. If my children’s lives were being threatened, I’d rip a throat out with my own teeth- I believe any mother would.

Tink63 · 07/12/2024 06:44

I’m glad I live in a country where hand guns are difficult to get because I would certainly have been desperate enough to murder my school bullies and a certain abusive boyfriend in my younger days.

I have certainly considered murder but I have a conscience and I would find it difficult to live with the guilt.

If I had to, yes. Absolutely.

As could the vast majority, including those who are adamant they couldn't.

Our brains have systems that kick in when we're threatened, we're hardwired to survive. We needed it far more before we became "civilised" but it's still there.

SardinesOnGingerbread · 07/12/2024 07:02

It's all coming down to the punctuation for me. Irrespective of other contextual factors, if you're correctly punctuating, including using an Oxford comma, I'm giving you some leeway.

SardinesOnGingerbread · 07/12/2024 07:03

UmopapIsdn · 06/12/2024 21:30

Yes.

Is having a list too far?

Depends on the length of the list, I reckon.

Wallywobbles · 07/12/2024 07:10

Yes definitely in the heat of the moment. Less sure about a planned murder if I'm doing the killing myself. I always thought if i was very rich I'd like to have an assassin righting some of the worlds wrongs.

Oblomov24 · 07/12/2024 07:18

Yes. If someone wanted me to help them I could, I'm very practical. Or if someone was nasty and evil I also could.

BettyBardMacDonald · 07/12/2024 07:20

If I caught someone being cruel to wildlife, such as elephant poaching or abuse, yes, without a qualm.

KvotheTheBloodless · 07/12/2024 07:21

Yes, I definitely could, for the right reason (not just because they'd pissed me off!). I don't think it'd be particularly difficult - if my life or the life/safety of DS/DH were at stake I'd kill with zero guilt.
