Bringing your own condiments?!!

Was at a pub quiz last night and one of our team decided to order food. But they didn't have any mint sauce to go on his mushy peas. So he went out to his car and bought back an A4 document wallet crammed full of sachets of different sauces that he's taken from other places. Does anyone else actually do this?! The rest of us couldn't quite believe it.

I'll be taking black pepper to MIL's for Christmas because she only has white pepper for the table. I only use white pepper for cooking, it's too strong for the table for me! 😂

My boss has a large and varied condiment stash in his desk drawer. Another colleague has emergency tinned fish.

Why might you need fish in an emergency?!!😂😂

My mum has a selection of condiments in her handbag, also biscuits 'for emergencies'

Is that a proposal?!

My friend routinely carries hot sauce in her handbag

I do this. I like my food hot.

charlieinthehaystack · 06/12/2024 17:37

if I don't use it it comes home. things like jam or mayo only I eat so if I buy a jar it will just be wasted but if I have a portion size its just right for my toast etc.

I have a condiment stash in the car, partly allergy related but mostly I just don’t want bland food

Having a brand spanking new allergy that seems to discriminate against food coloured red, I carry around Aldi ketchup because I know it’s safe and won’t have my lips and eyes swelling up and leave me gasping for breath.

In the summer we were at a campsite with a club house, the owners were most disgruntled that I wasn’t using their proper Heinz ketchup until I explained!

AgentProvocateur · 06/12/2024 18:10

I keep a bottle of Tabasco in my handbag for spice emergencies 😂

DarkDarkNight · 06/12/2024 19:27

It’s a good idea. You should always have an emergency Maccies ketchup in the glove compartment, the full on condiment document wallet is good forward planning.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 06/12/2024 19:31

Op said documents wallet but I imagined a lever arch file with subject dividers and the friend turning to M for his mint sauce.

soupfiend · 06/12/2024 19:34

I think a lot of people carry hot sauce and tabasco around

Im impressed by this bloke. Top condimenting.

soupfiend · 06/12/2024 19:36

Although.

I do take issue with the mint sauce

In my view, mushy peas need lots of vinegar on them, then, tomato sauced mixed in.

Thats mushy peas.

shellyleppard · 06/12/2024 19:38

Never heard of it but I'm very impressed!!

I'm clearly the only one that has never heard of putting mint sauce on mushy peas! Is this regional? I've lived in the UK 20yrs and never seen this done. Do you serve this with lamb or fish???

You can buy tins with mint already added. Might be a Northern thing. My favourite is to make a little well in the peas to fill with vinegar.
In my car I have sachets of brown sauce, vinegar, pepper and salt. I used to like stealing the sachets of chilli flakes from Costco but haven't seen any for a while.

There's something rather Pratchettesque about "emergency fish". Reminds me of "You're all right, so long as you've got a potato."

Just me, then?

It's a local thing. They sell them at fairs. 🤢

Met up with the other people who were at the quiz. They were mortified when the wallet came out. 😂

I carry a few in my handbag and a good supply of decaf teabags/fruit teas - all taken from hotels and restaurants of course. I also carry disposable cutlery because you never know when it's useful

fivebyfivebuffy · 08/12/2024 00:08

At work one day I discovered I had brought the wrong box of food, and it was just roast chicken Grin

Colleague rummaged in his desk drawers and produced some wraps and then said "Nando's sauce, mayo or ketchup?"

Saved my lunch!

OliveHenry · 08/12/2024 00:50

I'm thrilled to have just bought a handbag size bottle of Hendo's and can't wait to use it!

Tintackedsea · 08/12/2024 00:55

I do. I always have salt. Wee mini bottles of Tabasco. That's my handbag. Ketchup and mayonnaise, vinegar, cutlery all in the car. I don't have mint sauce but. That's a wee thought right enough.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/12/2024 03:46

As someone in the industry, very much prefer someone who takes sauces and then uses them rather than someone who takes a huge handful of ketchup sachets, uses two and then dumps the rest on the greasy ketchuppy plate. We cant reuse them as they are dirty so they just get chucked. For every box of sachets, I would guess that only about a third are actually used. Every single summers day (sachets are only used for outdoors eating) we throw away thousands of the damned things.

DrCoconut · 08/12/2024 05:44

I need to do this. So many places have condiments that I can't use due to gluten.
