Bringing your own condiments?!!

Was at a pub quiz last night and one of our team decided to order food. But they didn't have any mint sauce to go on his mushy peas. So he went out to his car and bought back an A4 document wallet crammed full of sachets of different sauces that he's taken from other places. Does anyone else actually do this?! The rest of us couldn't quite believe it.

I know quite a few people who carry hot sauce with them. I believe Naomi Campbell always has a bottle of Pickapeppa and I know Hillary Clinton carries hot sauce in her bag. I also know someone who is a devotee of a specific brand of artificial sweetener that places don't always have, so she carries a supply of sachets. And of course half the Brits I know keep teabags with them when travelling in America!

But a whole selection, I don't think I've known anyone who did that...

I keep ketchup in the car- for fish and chips outings!

My daughter is very popular at lunchtime in school because she has her own salt grinder that she happily shares.

There is a particular condiment called Hendersons Relish
that has made in Sheffield since 1885, it looks similar to Lea and Persons but tastes nothing like it.
At one time you would not find it in restaurants outside of Sheffield, even in other parts of South Yorkshire, so I have always had a 'travelling bottle of Hendos in the car.
So I am totally with your team mate.

It is such a legend in Sheffield, it has spawned a whole new industry, cook books, art, mugs, clothing and for wedding favours, mini bottles of Hendos.
Rumour has it while Sean Bean was filming LOTR in New Zealand, he had a box of it shipped out to him!

My dp carries little sachets of oat milk with him because he prefers it in tea.

Met up with the other people who were at the quiz. They were mortified when the wallet came out. 😂

I think the responses on here arent what you wanted to hear then, you dont like him, wanted people to laugh and sneer and now are pleased the others were mortified (not sure why).

Im going to build up a condiment portfolio I think

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sachet of mint sauce here. I’m in Scotland so not as common.

When we were on holiday I took a big squeezey bottle of Heinz tomato sauce and kept it under my youngest’s buggy. It stresses me out waiting for the condiments to arrive. Half the time they forget and meanwhile the food’s going cold. They never bring enough either. Usually one tiny little pot between three kids.

My DH thought I was being ridiculous, but it was a a godsend.

We’ve only been with the ketchup-loving Gdcs twice, but I was impressed with the Five Guys system, where you can help yourself ad lib to ketchup from a giant dispenser - little pots provided!

My Malaysian friend has a ziplock bag of spices. According to her there is never enough chill/ garlic/ ginger/ pepper etc.

When we lived in France I always carried emergency Yorkshire teabags with me as their Lipton yellow label is crap.

Dpresst · 08/12/2024 09:19

I use the front zip pocket on my hand bag to store sachets of salt, ketchup and anything else I know I might fancy on my meals out.

doodleschnoodle · 08/12/2024 09:20

DH always has salt sachets in his wallet!

Reminds me of Richard E Grant and his interview on DISH Wink

I had no idea this was so common. Clearly I've been missing a trick. Although I used to carry a bottle of mint syrup to put in my latte years ago, in case of emergency!

I took tea bags to France for this same reason.

My daughter is very popular at lunchtime in school because she has her own salt grinder that she happily shares.

DD always has sachets of salt with her at school lunch as salt is banned, presumably for health reasons. Her and her friends all chipped in and bought a bottle of Heinz mayo to share with their lunches as the school sachets are 20p each and taste "horrible". When her year head realised, she praised their initiative! Although lately I noticed our mayo at home running out quicker than usual so I suspect I may be subsidising them!

Can you add most spices after cooking? I thought it was only ones that had been cooked already - like spice mixes (Chinese 5 spice etc). I thought all other spices had to be used in the process of preparing the meal, not used afterwards at the table like seasoning.
