Elf on the Shelf - does it get worse every each year

We don't do it in our house and never will.
My SM feed however is full of Elf on the Shelf and a lot of it this year seems to be toilet jokes.
I just find it distasteful and a bit rude.

Am I the only one to think that?

I love elf on a shelf. I have Snoop on a stoop as well but we don't do any of the pranks. They just kind of hang out

LittleRedRidingHoody · 04/12/2024 09:56

Ew that's disgusting.

We do Elf on the Shelf - I've never done a toilet related one! You're right though, there seem to be a lot popping up on social media this year.

pimplebum · 04/12/2024 09:57

Yuk! And what a pain to clean I never wanted to do it as once you have started it’s such a ball ache and I try to reduce all stress however eldest wants to do it for youngest and we now have costumes! and I’m jumping out of bed when I forgotten …

I love laughing as a family as much as the next person but to me the above is

  1. Ew (especially first thing in the morning)
  2. Waste of chocolate
  3. Extra mess to clean
  4. Potentially teaching young dc that smeared poo is not unacceptable

I just don't get why is this so popular with parents nowadays...

Don't look at these then 😂

I'm genuinely nervous to click on that

It’s disgusting and it’s not even for the kids anymore. It’s pathetic parents trying to outdo each other on Instagram.

Topseyt123 · 04/12/2024 10:09

I am so glad there was none of this elf on the shelf bollocks when my children were small, not that I'd have bothered with it beyond a very basic level if there had been.

That's disgusting, and shows children that it is OK, even funny, to shit all over the toilet seat and surroundings.

1WanderingWomble · 04/12/2024 10:11

That is...disgusting.

Katyfour · 04/12/2024 10:12

I am glad my children were much older by the time the elf stuff came about. My main objection to it is the amount of work required. I don’t really mind the toilet one - it would be easy enough to wipe a thin layer of chocolate off the bog. Although I am too old to understand the joke meaning that’s written in it.

Cactuslife · 04/12/2024 10:12

Hate it. We did a very tame version for a few years where I just hid a cuddly elf in a different place each day but this is horrible.
what has it got to do with Christmas?

BourbonsAreOverated · 04/12/2024 10:17

That’s grim! We’ve done it for well over ten years now. It’s definitely the best bit of Christmas for us.
ours doesn’t prank, just bring crafts, decorations and things relevant to the day (e.g jumper on jumper day, new pen for an exam). When the kids were tiny, it would be sweet shops, toys doing funny things, sweet treasure hunts that sort of thing

username2373 · 04/12/2024 10:29

I follow a lot of mums for my small shop account and I had several similar to the above today ('skibidi toilet'), I saw cereal filled toilets, and elf's 'drinking and pooing' cola.
Not sure if there is a manual/ inspiration page that many of them follow but there's a theme...

mondaytosunday · 04/12/2024 12:28

Yes I noticed in the posts on FB they seem quite a preoccupation with the bowel movements of the Elves! Nothing as disgusting as what you posted, more on the line of eating a corn on the cob and popcorn coming out the other end..

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 04/12/2024 12:30

Ours just move around the house.
I refuse to do mess and chaos.

TheTreeLightsAreFuckingMeOffNow · 04/12/2024 12:39

It's not my thing but what an earth is there to be offended about? How is it distasteful and rude?

Everyone's so bothered about what people do these days. You've chosen not to participate, fine, as have I, but you're choosing then to be professionally offended by it.

Live & let live.

DappledThings · 04/12/2024 12:42

Not seen any Elf business on my Facebook this year. I think it might be dying out. Hurrah.

MrsKeats · 04/12/2024 12:49

That's so gross.
I can't stand all this elf rubbish.
Glad my kids are grown up.

coxesorangepippin · 04/12/2024 12:50

Snoop on a stoop 🤣

Omg my kids would love that

sanityisamyth · 04/12/2024 12:54

Someone on here put a similar picture on a thread, suggesting it was such good fun and didn't understand why everyone didn't do it. Elf on the shelf is bloody stupid at the best of times. Who has the time or mental capacity to deliberately trash their house and then clean it up again afterwards?! But shit like that? Ummm no.

Interesting questions even though quite the exaggeration to say I'm 'professionally offended'...

Don't you notice and think about little cultural phenomena like that, share an opinion while, prepared to listen to others?

Children laugh at peekaboo, square wheels on a tractor , knock knock jokes (depending on age). Children are also expected to have good manners, show respect, avoid toilet talk, etc all of which can be taught in a fun way through play. They love playing shopping, going to the doctor, cooking, building Lego's...

Is Elf on the Shelf still intended as some play fun for children or has it evolved into something different?

You are glad your kids are grown up because of elf on the shelf?!

wafflesmgee · 04/12/2024 20:58

I don't like elf kn the shelf, I find it takes away from what I want my family to focus kn in advent, and I think their faces are creepy. I don't like celebrating bad behaviour every day and I am too lazy to do it as well.

I don't mind others who do it, but it's not my thing.

Like a pp, I'm certainly glad that we missed it by a couple of years.

I wouldn't want that sinister little toy in my house. Its face gives me the creeps.

It was ever thus. A stupid idea practiced by stupid people, the type who buy advent bouquets, christmas eve boxes and other such shite off facebook fwends.
