Elf on the Shelf - does it get worse every each year

We don't do it in our house and never will.
My SM feed however is full of Elf on the Shelf and a lot of it this year seems to be toilet jokes.
I just find it distasteful and a bit rude.

Am I the only one to think that?

Our elf doesn’t do much right now because DS is only 2 so he’s easily amused but older kids love the toilet humour so I’m not surprised it’s a popular theme.

I love seeing what some elves are getting up to on social media. My favourite so far is an elf ‘spray painting’ merry Xmas on the car and the elf writing in ink only children can see to ask for ice cream for dinner and the elf magic will make the parents say yes.

No.

It's an American import; and while no means all American imports are bad, this is a stupid one. Why put more pressure upon yourself? Elf in a new place and position for 1/12 of an entire year? Are you mad? People get carried away on one year. Then the next, they can't be arsed.

If, presumably, they're doing it for the kids, not Insta, don't the kids go 'where's the Elf? Why hasn't he moved?'

Don't get me started on Christmas Eve boxes.

Can't bear Elf On The Shelf. I think it was cute when it started but now it seems to be another 'aren't we just amazing' social media brag for the parents.

We do elf on a shelf, ours are not naughty though, they are cheeky. They do things like sliding down the bannisters, zip lining from the curtains to the lightshade, making chocolates and using my cake decorations on them, having a pj party with the dolls and teddies. It doesn't have to be disgusting, it can be wholesome things. My daughter loves them and I have just as much fun coming up with new ideas and watching her face when she finds what they've done.

I've noticed it less this year but maybe it's because I've got teens and most friends kids have grown out of it. It didn't seem to be a thing when my DC were little but it seems a lot of effort for soneone as lazy as me! 🤣

And I definitely wouldnt a) waste chocolate or b) want to clean the toilet more than is necessary
.. but happy for those with the time/inclination/ideas to crack on ....

@Vodkamummy absolutely! I think it started cute and I'm sure many parents still do just that.
The ones regularly posting on SM seem to be taking it to another level/ aiming at other audience rather than their own children?

That's disgusting and im not a prude. Surely it's encouraging younger children to copy?!

I'm currently pregnant and have already decided the creepy little fucker isn't stepping foot in this house!

My kids are too old for EOTS now but loved it when they were little. We still put the elves out every year, but they no longer prank.

Would never have done that one though. Decorating the loo rolls was as close to the toilet as we got.

Why? @dragongrl they're not that bad 😂

When did Elf on the Shelf become a thing? My DC are older now - 18 and 20 and it wasn't something any of us were aware of.

I find them ugly and creepy.

SunnyHappyPeople · 07/12/2024 07:32

Daily posts on what the elf is up to on my FB

Why?

Do people really think its important, every bloody day
