Do I need a Visa to fly to New York?

Flying to New York this week and noticed something about needing a Visa on our tickets? I vaguely remember filling out a Visa actually on the plane when we last visited the USA, but that was years ago?

Is it the same now?

Definitely need an esta. Have you not looked it up??

TotallyTwisted · 02/12/2024 08:54

No, you'll be grand. They'll wave you in no questions asked. 🙄

Yep you need an esta. I would probably do the fast track and pay. Good luck

Yes, you need an esta, or you won't be going.

And they aren't always as easy to get anymore.

ApolloandDaphne · 02/12/2024 08:55

You need to complete an Esta before you go You do it online. Get it done now so it has time to come through.

custardpyjamas · 02/12/2024 08:55

Year's ago I had to go to the US embassy to get a Visa. No idea what the rules are now, but Google is your friend.

frozendaisy · 02/12/2024 08:55

Yes you need to fill out an online visa form it takes up to 72 hours usually quicker so do it today and it will be fine.

Yes you need it

tokyolunchbowl · 02/12/2024 08:55

If you are flying on UK passport yes you need an ESTA - probably won’t be able to check-in unless completed

It can be <24 hour turn around but get on it ASAP

www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/entry-requirements

esta.cbp.dhs.gov

Apply for an ESTA asap. They replaced the inflight visa waiver years ago.

I'm pretty sure an ESTA isn't free. I think it's around $20. But make sure you do it directly, not via one of the many companies who pay google to get to the top of the search lisitings and charge extra on top.

DowntonFlabbie · 02/12/2024 08:58

It's Def not free. And can take more than 72 hours. DPs took 8 hours, mine took 6 days to come back, and a friend was recently refused due to other places she had been.

betterangels · 02/12/2024 09:00

The ESTA is definitely needed and not free. Do it today.

weatherisjustmist · 02/12/2024 09:00

As others have said you need to apply for an esta but make sure you go through the us gov website and don't just google it. There are outside companies that charge you over the odds for it going through their link - last time I did one it was about £18 I think but my in laws googled it and paid £75 🙄

Trainstrike · 02/12/2024 09:00

Our ESTAs took 4 days a couple of weeks ago.

Well last time I flew to America as a uk tourist you filled in a quick form on the plane and they did indeed wave you through no questions asked.
So no need really, was there?

louisianachild · 02/12/2024 09:01

I’m astonished you didn’t know this OP, googling ‘travel to New York’ brings ESTAs up as the third option. How on earth have you missed this when booking and researching your trip and sorting travel insurance?

@WhatYouPutOutComesBack I've paid for the Australian one AND the US one this year. Neither are free! 😂

ChannelFiveDrama · 02/12/2024 09:05

My friend did hers at the airport before boarding the flight having been told at check in that it was needed(!). It came through almost immediately

One thing to note ahead of applying (assuming it's the same) is that you have to put in your social media accounts. It used to be optional but then they may it mandatory.

That was a very long time ago.

ChannelFiveDrama · 02/12/2024 09:06

Googling suggests it's now optional again
