If you have an ipad what do you use it for?

I only have an android phone and a kindle. No laptop and no tv.

I am toying with the idea of getting a used iPad. I am not quite sure how I would use it. I find doing everything on the phone quite challenging. I think it would he quite nice to watch films on.

I always had windows laptops until a few years ago when my last one died and I didn't replace it on cost grounds. I have had a while to save up.

I don't have Internet at home so I use mobile data and I would possibly get one with cellular to save me tethering all the time.

I don't think this is a necessity, but I am fed up with the tiny screen. I had an android tablet previously.

I use it for
Watching tv shows in bed/when DH is watching the tv
Reading books
Going on MN
Online shopping (can see things more clearly than on phone)
Logging into things for work
Booking holidays

Floralnomad · 30/11/2024 11:00

I use it for browsing , shopping , internet banking etc play one or two games and occasionally watch cricket on it . I have tried other tablets but the iPad is the best IMO . I have an android phone though .

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 30/11/2024 11:03

Was given one as a gift and ended up passing it on to my godson as I never used it. If I want to watch something I put the TV on and other than that I couldn't figure out the point of it. Maybe if my eyesight then was as dodgy as it is now it would have been useful having a bigger screen.

Catsmere · 30/11/2024 11:04

I use mine for everything except making phone calls and taking photos (the iPhone takes better quality shots). Playing games, watching films or television series, reading the websites I'm usually on (MN, for instance). The screen is still a bit small but it's far better than a phone! I use a dongle, too - home broadband costs a fortune here. The only issue I'd see is that it won't be compatible with your Android phone. Is there any reason to go for an iPad rather than an Android tablet?

LadyGabriella · 30/11/2024 11:06

Netflix and watching programmes

DustyLee123 · 30/11/2024 11:07

Browsing mumsnet, shopping, YouTube etc. I only use my phone for texts/whatsapp and TikTok

eRobin · 30/11/2024 11:07

Just watch the TV. iPads are specifically designed to be addictive and you’ll waste hours of your day on it everyday

Greyboard · 30/11/2024 11:29

I don't have a tv! There's nowhere to put one in my room (houseshare).

I had an android tablet before but one of my DC took it.

The reason I want apple is that all my DC have apple and I therefore am excluded. They won't download whatsapp. They all laugh at me for having android. I'd quite like to switch to apple now while I am still able to learn new things. I will possibly get an iPhone in the future but I won't be transferring anything from my current phone to the iPad I don't think.

I use it all the time:
Mumsnet
Netflix in bed
BBC IPlayer
Channel 4
Emails
FaceTime
Shopping

I couldn't live without it

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/11/2024 12:27

It's easier on my eyes than my phone and means I don't have to go upstairs to the laptop.

atiaofthejulii · 30/11/2024 19:17

I have an android phone and don't like my work iPhone at all. But I love my iPad - I read Kindle books and library e books on it, shopping of all kinds is better because you can just see stuff better, I like watching TV in bed or while I'm cooking or tidying.

I have Microsoft OneDrive so everything is seamlessly on my phone, my iPad and my laptop (which I rarely use now).

KnottyKnitting · 30/11/2024 19:36

I use mine in pretty much the same way I used a laptop. Social media, streaming TV, YouTube, shopping, internet/ googling, booking holidays/ flights, games Etc.

I do have a laptop but use this mainly for music composition as the software I use is not available on the I pad.

JuliaLivilla · 30/11/2024 19:38

I specifically bought one to use for streaming, but have come to realise how excellent they are for games. Plus I have the attention span of a flea and find it really useful to look up something that catches my attention in a TV show or book. It also saves me getting out of bed and getting out the "Big" atlas to check locations from books.

I always buy refurbished iPhones and iPads, but new MacBooks, as that is what I use for banking, shopping, admin, writing stuff, etc. I find using the virtual keypad a problem for accuracy and comfort. I suppose I just find using the laptop easier/more intuitive because I have been using Macs for several decades.

DanielaDressen · 30/11/2024 19:40

Everything. I only use my phone outside f the house, much prefer the bigger iPad screen.

so internet, reading books on the kindle app, tiktok, YouTube videos, a few games. Sometimes watch tNetflix on it but not often as prefer a bigger tv screen.

ohyesido · 30/11/2024 19:41

I use mine for tarot cards and internet shopping

Apocalypselastyear · 30/11/2024 19:46

Using a VPN to watch American tv shows

RedRiverShore5 · 30/11/2024 19:47

Most things, I find it a lot easier than my phone, I'm old and find my phone a bit fiddly even though is one of the bigger pro max ones. I also have an iMac but find the iPad easy as it's on a side table next to the sofa.

endofthecorridoor · 30/11/2024 19:49

I use mine every day. News MN email's WhatsApp kindle shopping general internet social media etc.

Nail123 · 30/11/2024 19:56

Gambling and entering competitions 🤣

I like my phone for social media and forums as it just seems to work better on there.

I need to the larger screen for my comps and couldn’t do the same amount on my phone. If the TB’s taken, then ITVX/iPlayer is great for watching TV on it as well.

MrsPeregrine · 30/11/2024 19:56

Reading, watching Netflix, YouTube, FaceTime, reading emails, online shopping, digital art and design. I also have an app called ForScore which I save digital copies of sheet music I have purchased and downloaded which means I don’t have to print them as I can just put my iPad on the piano music stand and display the music on my iPad. I can even turn the pages of the music using eye movements.

RedRiverShore5 · 30/11/2024 20:00

My iPad is 11 inch and I do use it loads for TV when we go away in the caravan, I download lots from Netflix and iPlayer etc. before we go and watch that rather than the caravan telly which usually has poor signal, if you are using it a lot for TV, would get a bigger one not a mini.

JustMeAndTheFish · 30/11/2024 20:10

I have an iPad mini and for 99% of the time I use it instead of my laptop.
i read - Kindle app, watch television, listen to radio and music, have my tickets etc on it as a backup when I travel, emails, shopping.. etc. The only thing I use my laptop for more than the iPad is word processing and spreadsheets etc as the open source programs I use won’t open in IOS.

LuluBlakey1 · 30/11/2024 20:12

I use it for everything except phone calls.

HenryV111 · 30/11/2024 20:14

Love mine, literally would be lost without it. Use it for everything.
All tv series/ film watching. Never use the TV have given it to other family.
All emails, including work if checking mail when away from computer.
Social media, inc Facebook, what’s app & messenger.
listening to music/ podcasts/audio books
Making phone calls. I have an old iPhone and can use the iPad to call instead. Also use it for video calling on messenger.
Sometimes my work lap top is on the blink and I can use iPad to video call work clients/have online meetings on MS Teams. Has saved my bacon numerous times!
Making online purchases of any type.
Researching for academic papers.
Any general surfing, planning holidays.
Taking photos/ videos. All my photos are on the iPad, backed up in cloud.
Reading recipes, propping it up in kitchen & cooking from recipe.

-planning journeys. Just today I downloaded a travel app to see when next bus was for my young teen, who is in early stages of starting to travel independently. It was brilliant, I could see on the bus tracker where the bus was, was able to direct child to correct bus stop (numerous bus stops in busy city) & could track child on their iPhone. Then I could track them on bus and tell them what stop to get off at. Child has some additional needs so requires some extra scaffolding when learning new skills. This is obviously specific to my needs, but I have been reflecting today how tech can be supportive in widening the world. Without that tech, I would have probably needed to make the journey with child several times before they were confident. And even then unless doing it regularly they could forget in between!

Now much of this can be done on a phone but I can’t stand the small screen.

and it’s handy having the family on apple.

Middlemarch123 · 30/11/2024 20:16

Have Apple IPad and I love it. Audible books, Netflix, ITVX, IPlayer, YouTube, Disney, games, news etc. Got compatible earbuds Sony, for a fraction of the price of Apple ones and they’re brilliant too.
