What are your favourite wines for under £10.00?

Both mine come from the same winery. Purely coincidence. This is not a promotion, bribe, advert etc.

Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark Horse Chardonnay

I also quite like Bigfoot Zinfandel.

I'm not keen on rose, by and large.

Why does everyone call it chicken wine rather than its full name?

It's got Chickens on the label

beachcitygirl · 01/12/2024 04:17

Under a £10 I like - la vielle ferme rose
Apothic red - I like them all
Barefoot buttery Chardonnay - surprisingly drinkable and very cheap.
Gavi docg from Lidl

Why does everyone call it chicken wine rather than its full name?

It has gone viral on social media as being called Chicken Wine, so much so they have now started producing some with labels that say Chicken Wine rather than La Veille Ferme (which I've probably spelt wrong hence chicken wine got popular!).

GroovyChick87 · 01/12/2024 07:39

I like the " chicken wine" and also the Aldi version if it. I also like the Kylie rosè, Barefoot merlot and Chapter and Verse merlot from Aldi. Sometimes the Kylie one is over a tenner but it's usually on offer in Asda for about £9.

I tend to favour cheap wines, having tried expensive ones and they appear wasted on my unsophisticated palate 😂

I really enjoy the Aldi merlot and malbec, at £3.89 (or thereabouts). If we go abroad, I always buy the cheapest reds I can find. My best yet, was a french table wine, at the equivalent of £1.29 for the bottle!

Anything over £5 is genuinely wasted on me.

Same here. I've tried all sorts of higher priced wines such as Whispering Angel or Champagne/Chapel Down and I honestly can't tell the difference or think it's worth three times as much as the cheapest versions.

We have friends who live in Spain and we visited them not long after his parents had been over. There was half a bottle of wine in the fridge that we finished off and agreed it was very nice and said we'd get some more. Our friend said 'it might be expensive because his DF had bought it and he was a bit of a wine snob'. But when we looked in the supermarket, we found that is was something ridiculous like 59 cents.

But I've just looked in my wine cupboard and found about 10 bottles of random fizz that I'd forgotten I'd bought (mixture of cheap Cava, slightly more expensive Cava, Cremant and some English sparkling wine that I bought from M&S that reduced from £16 to £8). There's also a bottle of 'Chicken Rose' and a couple of other bottles of rose.

I tend to stock up when offer and combine offers too. Eg in Sainsburys at least, you can often get 25% off when you buy 6, and there will be a few pounds off some bottles too. So you end up paying about £6 for wine that would cost £11 when not on offer, so a good saving if you time your purchases.

Barefoot fizzy pink moscato or the normal moscato

Sainsbury's do a TTD fizzy Moscato which is very drinkable. And cheap!

Bs0u416d · 01/12/2024 08:04

I really enjoy Aldi's Animus Douro Reserva.

Haselnuss · 01/12/2024 08:11

Paul Mas Languedoc Reserve Rouge from Waitrose is £9.99 and is a reliably good red, I usually buy a few bottles at Christmas, I've also seen Paul Mas wines in Asda snd Sainsburys under their own label but not tried them.

BarkLife · 01/12/2024 08:11

Aldi's version of Vieille Ferme is nicer than the original - Petit Poulet Grin

TheTecknician · 01/12/2024 08:13

I remember the Paul Masson California carafes but I don't know Paul Mas. Undoubtedly there's dozens of wineries I'm unaware of.

Sainsbury's do a Gruner Veltliner which is just beautiful. Currently on offer for about £9. Their Trentino pinot grigio is really drinkable too and around £7.

eakjoy · 01/12/2024 08:18

I buy cases from Naked wines, works out about £10 a bottle, nice to get a variety of ones I've never tried.

Fizbosshoes · 29/11/2024 22:30

I like barefoot merlot, which is real cheapy.

Me too!
Usually a white wine drinker, I like Sauvignon blanc and my usual choices are Villa Maria, oyster Bay, Vavasour which fluctuate in price

I'm not ashamed to admit this but I quite like the 19 crimes range.

Me too.

TheTecknician · 09/12/2024 21:21

I've just had half a bottle of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon from Aldi, £4.49. Drinkable but not recommended. I'll finish it but I won't be buying another.

Yellowtail Jammy Rosè Roo and Gallo Grenache are my go to wines, cheap and sweet. I recently discovered Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay which is very good considering I tend to stick with rosè. It’s slightly over £10 but lovely

Why does everyone call it chicken wine rather than its full name?

Because it has a picture of a chicken on the front!

EachpeachpearplumIspytomthumb · 09/12/2024 21:34

Ned Sauvignon.
Aldi’s organic pinot grigio is also very drinkable.

Ineffable23 · 09/12/2024 21:36

I like this from the wine society:

And this one is good:

https://www.thewinesociety.com/product/cotes-du-rhone-rive-droite-rive-gauche-2023/

I am a big fan of cooperatives and it has such a good range of interesting wines and fortified wines. I also like the fact that I don't need to do a regular order or anything.

Porta 6

Campo Viejo Temperanillo

Lidl's Cepa Lebrel Rioja

MyStylish40s · 09/12/2024 21:38

Barefoot merlot. I think it’s lovely , and I prefer it to some very expensive reds I’ve tried. I know others who can’t stand it and consider it to be vinegar!

White - 19 crimes Sauvignon blanc, but unfortunately just 2 glasses gives me a hangover these days.

Ilovemyshed · 09/12/2024 21:46

19 crimes chardonnay and Jam Shed

Catterbat · 09/12/2024 21:47

This is incredible. It’s a pound over a tenner but often on offer.
