What are your favourite wines for under £10.00?

Both mine come from the same winery. Purely coincidence. This is not a promotion, bribe, advert etc.

Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark Horse Chardonnay

I also quite like Bigfoot Zinfandel.

I'm not keen on rose, by and large.

Waitrose or M nS Provence rose, any Primitivo. I quite like a Shiraz too. Also have some award winning wines around £10. I like Cava too, it's far superior to Prosecco.

I agree about Cava, it's less sweet than prosecco. Sainsbury's Taste the Difference cava is very decent and about £8

AgnesX · 30/11/2024 09:16

M&S own label pecorino is really nice. Not too dry and doesn't give me a hangover (which I get at the drop of a hat these days 🥺).

macshoto · 30/11/2024 10:16

Dark Horse is what I would describe as a ‘manufactured’ brand wine (Yellow Tail is similar). Grapes from hundreds of vineyards; fermentation artificially stopped to make the wine sweeter than it would ordinarily be; more of a manufactured than a natural product, etc. All on the FAQ page of the brand: https://www.darkhorsewine.co.uk/FAQs

I try not to drink too much wine under £10 - as the tax and duty means you are getting much less value of wine for your money than with a slightly more expensive bottle. For example, going from £8 to £10 a bottle approximately doubles the value of the wine in the bottle, and increasing to £15 gives you almost 5 times the value of the wine you are drinking. See www.bauduc.com/news/a-guide-to-uk-duty-hikes-on-wine/

Given the choice, I'd rather drink less, but better.

The other way you can get better wine for your money is by joining The Wine Society. It’s a member owned cooperative that has existed since the mid 19th century. Membership costs about £40, but you get half of that back on your first order. The big advantage over supermarket wine is that the Wine Society, being a cooperative, isn’t looking to make a profit for shareholders - so you get more wine for your money. See thewinesociety.com for more.

Limited budget means I can't be too picky. At least Dark Horse is what it says on the label, i.e. single grape albeit from more than one vineyard.

I once had some literature from the Wine Society and I was uncomfortably struck by the superior, quite arsey tone. That was my interpretation anyways from about twenty years ago. Maybe things have improved.

Another vote for Jamshed Shiraz.

AnotherDayAnotherOutfit · 30/11/2024 11:35

Just here to say I missed the decimal point in your title and thought you were insanely rich looking at £1k bottles. As you were!

Xmastreefreak · 30/11/2024 11:36

Yellow tail - Jammy red roo 😳

ItsMintUpNorth · 30/11/2024 11:38

I've never been a rose drink but I bloody love that chicken wine.

Tesco finest Prosecco if I want fizz or beef steak if I want red.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 30/11/2024 11:41

Oh I love barefoot! Any of theirs except the white to be honest (can’t stand white wine)
If I can’t get barefoot then yellow tail is my next favourite cheapo wine

Remember when the cheaper wine was under a fiver? 🤣 god I miss those days

Barefoot merlot is my fave. DH is more snobby discerning about wine and doesn't really like it. Luckily it's available in the tiny bottles so I just get a small bottle for myself and DH can choose something else

SereneCapybara · 30/11/2024 22:04

Ned sauvignon
Co op cava

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 30/11/2024 22:06

I tend to favour cheap wines, having tried expensive ones and they appear wasted on my unsophisticated palate 😂

I really enjoy the Aldi merlot and malbec, at £3.89 (or thereabouts). If we go abroad, I always buy the cheapest reds I can find. My best yet, was a french table wine, at the equivalent of £1.29 for the bottle!

Anything over £5 is genuinely wasted on me.

Oh you are so much better at restraining yourself than me 🤣 if it’s Saturday night I’m cracking open a full bottle, for myself 🤣

TheTecknician · 30/11/2024 23:04

I need to top up my wine rack. As stated earlier I have budgetary constraints but fortunately some supermarkets are doing 25% off six or more bottles.

I really rate the Barefoot Buttery Chardonnay. And their Pinot Grigio is drinkable too (and I'm not usually a fan of Pinot).
I like the Jam Shed chardonnay too.
Waitrose do a Paul Mas white which is usually discounted which DH rates.

roses2 · 30/11/2024 23:23

This one is stronger than a malbec and very tasty

Jam Shed Chardonnay and 19 Crimes red.

Newtoiletseat · 30/11/2024 23:28

Dark Horse Chardonnay although I love a Viognier, haven't managed to find one in the shops that I like for a while. All a bit hit or miss.

Chicken wine, (we call it cock wine) 😜 or Mud House is lovely.

longtompot · 01/12/2024 00:21

These are some we enjoy regularly. Tbh, if you get an Argentinian Malbec you'll generally get a good red wine for a very good price. We bought some recently, these two, and the Butchers one was quite good. Not tried the Minimalist one yet so can't comment

Had some chicken wine tonight, much prefer my usual Mud House!

Crikeyalmighty · 01/12/2024 00:40

Apothic red ( Californian ) is pretty decent if you can get it around £10 and Edna valley or bread and butter are fab Californian whites which you can often get at majestic for that sort of level if buying 6 ( around £14 individually)

Namechangedforthis25 · 01/12/2024 00:45

Why does everyone call it chicken wine rather than its full name?

AllYearsAround · 01/12/2024 00:49

Morrisons Soave is really nice and under a fiver!
