Anyone a sugar addict who’s managed to quit sugar?

I really need to do this but it’s very very hard. The more I have the more I want.
I need to hear success stories from total sugar addicts who managed to quit!

I find it very hard in the evenings when my family get the biscuits and chocolate out and I can’t stop them having it.

I quit it in Aug 2021. Still quitted.

One of the best lines I heard was “if you had a sports car, you wouldn’t “treat” it to shit fuel. So why do you do that to yourself?”

Read David Gillespie Sweet Poison and SP Quit Plan

It’s not just sugar, it is carbs that turn to sugar. I am trying it right now actually. I am using sugar free chocolate as my treat and low carb bread, as I like poached eggs on toast.. I do not eat pasta or rice and do not miss them, they are just bland conduits for sauce so I substitute veg for them. I will have a couple of roast potatoes on a Sunday lunch though.

Fruit is high carbs, so reluctantly I am only having 1 piece a day.

Is it sugar you are addicted to or fat? Apparently if you like sugar you like boiled sweets etc but if you like chocolate it's more likely to be fat. You can then try eating things like yoghurt instead to get your fix.

Everythingaches · 24/11/2024 15:41

I eat lots of yoghurt, I literally eat and like everything. But the sugar makes me hungrier, it’s awful.

Not completely but I’ve not had sugar in my hot drinks for over three years. I think a total ban would be unrealistic for me. If you are bored on a night time and are teaching for the biscuits then maybe try and take up a hobby that will alleviate the boredom.

It's not biologically possible to completely quit eating any sugar whatsoever.
It is possible to dramatically reduce consumption of processed foods and foods containing copious amounts of added sugar.
Cold turkey works for some (though expect headaches for a while), whereas gradually reducing/replacing works for others.

99% of the time I am grain, root veg, sugar, artificial sweetener, alcohol and caffeine free. I also don’t eat meat. It’s not that hard.

Yogurt is really high in sugar (unless it’s high fat Greek yogurt).

OK, challenge accepted - tell me what you actually do eat.
Humans need glucose to survive. Glucose is a sugar.

Have a look at the Fast 800 book by Michael Moseley. I found it really helpful in explaining things and also has some diet and recipe information.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 24/11/2024 16:19

Yep.
Cold turkey on Atkins it was trendy at the time but I've broken the habit for years.

MaxineandPaul · 24/11/2024 16:26

Yep cold turkey to reset, occasionally slip and I go cold turkey again. I don’t like having sugar in the house - I can have the odd pudding after dinner but it’s a slippery slope.

Wow.😯 what does the remaining 1% of your time include (a triple shot espresso)?

No fruit or veg? Both of these contain sugar, at varying levels.

thisoldcity · 24/11/2024 16:33

If you mean sugary stuff like biscuits, cakes, chocolate, ice cream, then yes I quit them in February this year. I had to do it as I'd been diagnosed as pre-diabetic and I've managed to get my blood sugar out of that range now. The first 2 weeks are the worst, then it's easier!

Well done.
Did you have the awful headaches phase? I have dramatically reduced added sugar a couple of times and the headaches were not nice at all!

I'm asking if you have fruit or veg, because both contain sugar, and you said you don't like having sugar in the house.

thisoldcity · 24/11/2024 16:55

@DieStrassensindimmernass I didn't get any headaches, no, thank goodness...

It is high fat Greek yoghurt, that’s the only yoghurt I have.

I quit in April 2023 and haven't had a biscuit (cake, sweet, chocolate) since 🍪

I now need to do the same with wine Grin I also find not eating breakfast very helpful to maintain/lose weight.
