Anyone a sugar addict who’s managed to quit sugar?

I really need to do this but it’s very very hard. The more I have the more I want.
I need to hear success stories from total sugar addicts who managed to quit!

I think most people on these sugar free threads mean added sugar, not natural sugars found in fruit and veg. Certainly when I’ve cut out added sugar eg biscuits, cake etc, I’ve simply made my own food with veg/rice/pasta/fruit etc. So rather than having an apple pie I’d have an apple. Or rather than have biscuits I’d have more regular meals to ensure I didn’t get to the point of wanting anything extra in the first place.

The point is that the terms 'sugar free' or 'giving up sugar', and such-like, aren't really correct, because it's simply not possible to do so.
'Reducing unnecessary sugar' or 'minimising added sugar' are more accurate descriptions.
I do agree that not consuming excess sugar is a good thing.

It took a week. Then the craving went
Highly recommend only eating wholemeal pasta or brown rice as carbs and avoiding bread and potato completely for first week.
The slightest bit of sugar/biscuit/cake will make you want more, also apples bananas juice. Don't eat fruit or tomato in first week either, just green veg fats proteins complex carbs.
Plain Yoghurt is a good thing for getting recalibrated if you have desperate cravings.

Eating an apple when you are a sugar addict will just feed the craving.
Once you have reset the apples will fall into place ..you won't be desperate for them.

It really works, I just don't want biscuits or sugary drinks or wine anymore. I sometimes miss the taste of pudding but I'm not craving it.

I have always been a sugar addict 😫 but after my BP readings being super high I made some good dietary changes (one being a huge reduction in sugar) my BP has come right down in just a few weeks and my craving for sugar has hugely decreased. I think the less you have of something the less you crave it. I don't buy lots of sweet stuff in anymore, there are bits in the house but it's not been torturing me like it usually would!

I found it easier to think less about stopping eating sugar, and more about eating more of other things.

A protein heavy breakfast and lots of protein and fibre at all my meals keeps me fuller for longer, and flattens the ups and downs in my glucose levels over the course of the day.

When my family cracked out the sweets in the evenings, I was honestly too 'sated' to want any - and changing my thinking from 'I can't have sugar' to 'I can have loads of fish / broccoli / cottage cheese / spinach / rye bread' made the whole thing much less of a struggle.

Work this out - I decide to do cold turkey on sugar, do 1.5 weeks and have a cookie, then do another .5 of a week. Weigh 5lbs more than before, clothes feel tight.
Since Friday have eaten whatever I like and gone a bit mad, whole pack of chocolate biscuits, half a tub of ice cream, popcorn…bizarrely feel slim today and lost several lbs again 🤷‍♀️

Moral of the story is (I think) sugar isn’t everything!

Place marking for inspiration. My sugar/UPF consumption has been creeping up until now I'm eating way too much, especially with emotional/comfort eating.

Wondering about going cold turkey - not an easy time of year to take that approach though.

Not eating brown rice or potatoes is silly.

The book is simply written and explains everything you need to know.
No fad diets at all.

If that list is what you eat then you're not sugar free. You might not be having very much added sugar but many of the foods you list contain sugars and carbohydrate.

Very very small amounts. It’s as close as you can be to sugar/carb free!

@Oldcrockpot yes. But things like cakes and biscuits and the ingredients are not just all about weight. It can be what they do to the rest of ur body. Weight isn’t everything.

I go through periods of cutting out shit sugar and shit carby food and feel like a different person when I do- all my aches disappear and I have bags of energy.

I am going through a not so good phase as sugar and some alcohol has crept back in and I feel like crap again.

I find that intermittent fasting, lots
Of protein and not snacking helps.

Look up low GI diet. Eat 6 small portions a day of allowed food (wholegrain, limited root veg, limited tropical fruits, healthy fats). I was put on low GI during pregnancy (PCOS) and it worked really well for me.

I did Zoe, which showed me my blood sugar and blood fat response was bad.

That made me drastically cut down on sugar. I love chocolate but stick to dark now. I also love fruit and have cut down on that.

What you learn with Zoe is incredibly eye opening and probably one of the best things you can do for your health. They work out for you which foods are good and bad for you as an individual. It is expensive though but money well spent in my case.

As an alternative to Zoe buy a cgm (or get the free trial from Abbott) and test what affects your blood sugar yourself. Follow the advice in the podcasts I.e eat fermented food, 30+ plants a week, eat the rainbow etc and you will be pretty much there. The microbiome testing is still in its infancy and pretty unreliable.

As it works on insulin resistance, it really does balance the way your body processes glucose.
