What age did you start the menopause?

I’m early 40s and for a year or so my whole body has been aching, especially in one of my arms. I have zero sex drive, erratic periods, terrible mood swings, so emotions and cry frequently, have had bouts of hot sweats and get brain fog and forgetful. I’ve had my bloods done and they are fine. I’m being referred to an early menopause clinic just to have a chat through with them. I can deal with the symptoms above but my bod aching I feel like an 80yr old not early 40s. I’m also so tired all the time. For anyone who did have early menopause does any of the above symptoms resonate with you? thank you x

Yes they do, very much so. Mine was diagnosed a few days before my 40th birthday and they told me at a hospital gynae appointment. I'd already suspected it anyway as DM had started 'the change' (as they called it then) when she was 41. Early menopause runs in families apparently. That was a fun conversation I had to have with my dd.

56 and no sign yet, mores the pity

I'm 55. I'd say I have had some symptoms of perimenopause for about 7 years but it's hard to tell, some of it was stress imo. Still having periods.

DancingLions · 22/11/2024 21:34

My sister went through the menopause at 40. I'm 55 and seem to have been stuck in peri for about 8 years now 🙄. Our mum was 50 when she went through it, so we've had a mix of ages. Both my mum and sister had very few symptoms. Their periods just stopped one day and that was more or less it. I am still having periods, although it has gone down to 3 or 4 a year now. I've also had all the hot flushes, aches, brain fog etc. I just want it to be over now.

I think I was around 45/46 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'm now 53 and I think the worst is over 🙏

In my mid 30’s I was diagnosed when ttc, I’ve been on hrt for a few years now (I’m 43)& it’s helped LOADS

Foy19 · 22/11/2024 21:41

Nearly 50 and still having regular periods. Can feel some changes physically though so suspect it's not far off.

MrsAmaretto · 22/11/2024 21:43

I’m 44, no period for 10months, weight gain etc. No idea if I’m meant to go to the gp?

HippyKayYay · 22/11/2024 21:46

How regular are your periods, though, OP?

I went through menopause (as in, my periods stopped) when I was 46.

But I was in peri from about 40/41. Pretty much as soon as I got my period back after having my last child, my peri symptoms started. At the time I joked that getting my period back felt like going through puberty all over again, but in hindsight I realised what was actually going on. For me peri symptoms were: night sweats (often drenched the bed), eratic periods, terrible skin, rage rage rage and general emotional rollercoaster (altough hard to separate some of that from undiagnosed PND). The actual menopause has been a cake-walk in comparison (no adverse symptoms since my period stopped, other than slightly drier skin). I'm not on HRT.

flipflop76 · 22/11/2024 21:52

Around 44 / 45 for me.

Movinghouseatlast · 22/11/2024 21:55
  1. It has been horrific sadly, but HRT is wonderful.
RuthW · 22/11/2024 21:58

The menopause is the day you haven't had a period for a year (if you are over 50). Before that you are perimenopausal and after you are post menopausal

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 22/11/2024 22:02

56 and still waiting

Normandy144 · 22/11/2024 22:07

47 and still waiting. I think I am in peri but it is manageable. Having regular periods.

MissyB1 · 22/11/2024 22:13

Age 46 when I started treatment for breast cancer. It was literally like flipping a switch, overnight I went into full blown menopause, horrendous 🙁

BrieHugger · 22/11/2024 22:19

I’m in my early 50s and most friends are getting lighter or less frequent periods. Mine are becoming closer together (then occasionally far apart) and heavier than they’ve ever been. No other symptoms though. Bored with it all now.

zeddybrek · 22/11/2024 22:19
  1. I had regular periods but about 13 other symptoms. Biggest ones were extreme rage, very bad PMT, not feeling like myself, zero libido, brain fog, hair loss. Other symptoms were crap skin, becoming very smelly despite 2 showers a day and slightly high cholesterol when no change in my otherwise good diet and regular exercise.
LetsRedecorate · 22/11/2024 22:22

Peri - probs started at around 33/34 as I was fully menopausal by 40. Very few hot flushes but the anxiety, aches, insomnia and brain fog were awful. Because I wasn’t a walking hot flush the docs completely dismissed my suggestions of early menopause. By the time they listened I was in a dreadful state. HRT sorted my symptoms out very quickly and I’m so glad I found a dr who listened.

RampantIvy · 22/11/2024 22:25

Started getting hot flushes and irregular periods at about 47. I also suffered from horrendous migraines.

I had my last period at 50 and have never looked back.

I think I got off lightly compared to most women.

Sprinkly · 22/11/2024 22:32

I'm 33 and on hrt. Been on it 4 weeks wondering when it will start helping 😒

DramaAlpaca · 22/11/2024 22:42

I started getting perimenopause symptoms at 44.
