What age did you start the menopause?

I’m early 40s and for a year or so my whole body has been aching, especially in one of my arms. I have zero sex drive, erratic periods, terrible mood swings, so emotions and cry frequently, have had bouts of hot sweats and get brain fog and forgetful. I’ve had my bloods done and they are fine. I’m being referred to an early menopause clinic just to have a chat through with them. I can deal with the symptoms above but my bod aching I feel like an 80yr old not early 40s. I’m also so tired all the time. For anyone who did have early menopause does any of the above symptoms resonate with you? thank you x

Perimenopause started at 49.
Menopause 55.
You are a little bit young (compared to women in my family) but your symptoms do sound like perimenopause. NICE guidelines assume all women are in perimenopause from 45. Go and see your GP and see what they say.

I'm 53. Mild peri symptoms for the past few years and periods a bit irregular and very heavy. Now no period since August.

skippy67 · 22/11/2024 22:46

Periods stopped at 54. No symptoms before then.

I went into peri at 39, had my baby at 42. 42-48 were horrible years. I’m on HRT now & doing better. Feel much calmer, happier & less hopeless.

Inastatus · 22/11/2024 22:47

57

Skepticgal · 22/11/2024 22:57

I think it was all over by 44, but I could only see that in retrospect. At the time I had no idea that I was going through menopause.

pinkdelight · 22/11/2024 23:01

Also nearly 50 and nothing yet. I got a bit ragey a couple of years ago but changed my job and cheered up so not hormonal after all.

TicTac80 · 22/11/2024 23:08

I started peri in my mid-late 30s. My GP didn’t believe me, so I paid to see a gynaecologist privately for tests and check up. I’m
have been on HRT for about 5 months and I’m 44 now. Periods almost stopped and fed up of the crappy symptoms, but HRT has helped somewhat!

Apileofballyhoo · 22/11/2024 23:10

Looking back, I never went back to normal after a miscarriage when I was 36. But inital symptoms were hardly noticeable for what they were, it was only when I started hrt at 45 that I realised the dry skin and backache I'd been experiencing since my late 30s were actually symptoms of hormone loss. Much heavier periods too.

ParsnipPuree · 22/11/2024 23:11

46 with regular periods but just stopped sleeping.. then came the flushes. I'm over it now but will be taking hrt to my grave..protects heart and bones and gives me energy to exercise.. with annual mammograms have never reason to stop.

SabbatWheel · 22/11/2024 23:14

41, finished by 46, no HRT needed.

RockyFowlboa · 22/11/2024 23:16

"I can deal with the symptoms above but my bod aching I feel like an 80yr old not early 40s."

Remember that one AMA where the OP had an age gap between her and her husband, and she was getting flamed for expecting to be on the same level as her husband when she was 45 and he was 70 because of menopause?

Anddrumrollplease · 22/11/2024 23:19

Did anyone have any digestive issues because of peri? I have all this but with bloating, abdominal pain (upper left side under ribs) general discomfort but my anxiety is off the chart since I hit 41 so I don’t know if that’s linked. Everyone mentioning the rage and like a switch has flipped really resonates with me

Flanjango · 22/11/2024 23:35

After last child things felt different. Still
In 30s. Realised I was in perimenopause about 39. I was all done by 49...post menopause

Radiatorvalves · 22/11/2024 23:39

Nearly 54 and def peri but no menopause… bring it on…..

annonymousse · 22/11/2024 23:40

Had my last period aged 42. From age 40 my periods became very irregular. Never had a hot flush or any other symptoms but loss of libido and some mood swings. My sister is going through menopause now aged 54 and having a terrible time so I feel very lucky.

The later you start menstruating the earlier menopause comes. I started my periods at age 17.

Gingerisgoodforyou · 22/11/2024 23:44

49 now and must be in peri. Periods slightly closer together, aching feet in the mornings, brain fog, and reduced libido.

But had last child at 42 so feels like baby and toddler years have blended into it with tiredness, mum tum etc. Think ill feel quite sad when my periods finally stop.

TubeScreamer · 22/11/2024 23:53

41 but I didn’t have any of your symptoms. For me it was just awful debilitating migraines and irregular periods, after having been regular as clockwork, and ridiculously heavy when I had them. Think I only had one hot flush.

My early menopause was brought on by having chemo, so that might be why it was atypical.

SchoolSchmool · 22/11/2024 23:54

My last period was when I was 48.
I didn't have any noticeable symptoms in the lead up to this, apart from periods becoming more spread out and heavier or lighter some months, but around the time my of my last period, and up to now (just over two years on) I am
achey all over, especially when I wake up
zero sex drive
mood swings/quick to get angry
brain fog/forgetful

I also went through a phase of hating driving, for about six months, but i am back to being fine about driving now, but I've heard this is a thing!

Had bloods, nothing wrong with me, GP said I could take HRT if I wanted, but I decided against as by the time I bothered going, I was mostly just down to feeling achey in the morning, and a long hot shower mostly fixes that for me.

desidi · 23/11/2024 00:13

wondering how you figure it out when you have a mirena coil? I haven't had a period for over ten years thanks to Mirena and I'm 52.

Shityshitybangbang · 23/11/2024 00:40

Surgical menopause at 51. So straight into the hot flushes, sore boobs, aching joints, itchy bits overnight. No HRT just yet. Been three months since operation

jaimelesoleil · 23/11/2024 00:46

Regular periods until 57. Menopause at 58. Now 60 and on hrt.

MinnieMountain · 23/11/2024 07:20

40 because of breast cancer treatment. No allowed to take HRT 😠

CapaciousHandbag · 23/11/2024 07:39

At 40 my periods went wild (coming every 3 weeks, heavy flooding) and my skin suddenly decided I was 13 again and broke out in acne. I also could NOT ever stand being hot and frequently woke up in the night drenched in sweat. And I was miserable. Oh and the fatigue was something else - I’ve never really been able to exercise properly since. HRT from 42 helped a lot and I’m pretty sure I’d be out of the workplace without it, but I’m 46 and still having periods every three weeks (light now as I have a Mirena coil) and wondering when it’ll all end…

LuckysDadsHat · 23/11/2024 07:43

I started peri menopause about 42/43. I'm now 47 and still having "regular" periods of one every 4 months. Like clockwork it arrives and it drives me mad as every 4 months I hope it won't come.
