What is Bradford like? I'm starting a new job in Leeds next month. I'll be renting in Leeds for a while.

But I was looking at property prices, to buy in the future.

I see that there are some nice and affordable apartments in Bradford. Which is not far from Leeds

Does anyone know much about the place? What's it like? Thanks!

I think the film billy liar was filmed in Bradford and it looks lovely, I looked it up because I was admiring the architecture and grave yard!

However I believe it's a hot area for x l bully dogs?

I believe Four Lions was shot in Bradford, massive eyeroll

I had to go on a work placement for 3 weeks once in Bradford. Didn't know the place, read it was a total shithole and was extremely concerned when I read about 'no go' areas for white people (my dc were coming too). We had a great time, we stayed officially in Pudsey but was very close to Old Leeds Road. Food was amazing, people were very nice after the initial scepticism, my dh made friends with a guy who worked in one of the takeaways due to them both loving poetry and they are still in touch years later. As a poster said, I think a lot of the fear is islamophobia and 'we're going to be outbred in a few years'. The Asian bits are the strength IMO, the supermarkets, the food, we felt as if we were on a 'proper' holiday and that is only a good thing IMO. One of my dc is desperate to go back!

Interesting fact. Zayn malik from 1D is from Bradford.

But there are good and bad areas. It's not being snobby, it's just true. I live in a bad area -- I pay far higher car insurance, have had two robberies in the past year (of the car and garage not actually the house thankfully), the schools perform badly, there is litter and homelessness and drug taking. There are few local amenities, bad pollution, virtually no green space. It is urban and busy and ugly. People here have lower life expectancies than other parts of the city.

Im happy here and have reasons for choosing this area but obviously life would be easier if I could wander through a local park and buy a coffee and potter around a pretty town centre.
Living in "bad" areas is tough, and it makes sense to avoid them if you can afford to (unless like me you have a specific reason for being there).

There are OK suburbs in Bradford but I can't imagine it is an easy place to live either. Some towns are nicer places to live than others.

A lot of the hate towards Bradford is Islamaphobia. It has a large Muslim population and people say it's like Pakistan. I want to emphasise that I like Bradford and there are many nice places to live there. My colleague lives there and absolutely loves it. She's white, British and has no problem with the demographics. Just bear in mind that some of the people hating it are the type of people who call London "Londonistan".

Real talk!! :)

I'm amazed more people haven't reported this comment . Wow utterly horrendous thing to say

I reported this ages ago but nothing has been done. Typical MNHQ

QuackADoodleDoooo · 18/11/2024 23:31

OP it's very disappointing that you thought the nuclear weaponry comment was funny. It was disgustingly inappropriate. Perhaps just buy in Leeds and leave us happy Bradford folk to it.

Woah. I've never been to Bradford. I'll be going to visit it in two weeks. I've no opinion at all on what Bradford is like.

I thought the joke was funny, not becausw Bradford was in it, you could put any town in it, but just because over the top humour can be quite funny.

You could insert any town name in that joke.

People joke negatively about every city.

Me and my friends joke about our home town, we say

"the only good thing in it is the road out of it"!

I think thats funny! People not from my town also joke negatively about my town. I think it's funny!

People joke about my hometown all the time.

They say that it's a dump and it's full of boggers. It's not said in seriousness.

I think it's pretty funny.

You've got to be able to take a joke about your city!

Which is a sort of light-hearted funny joke, I get that.
Commenting that an entire city should be wiped out by a nuclear bomb is not funny at all.

Oh I got my wires crossed anyway I see.

I thought the poster was talking about the post on the first page where someone said that bradford should be bulldozed.

I didn't actually see the nuclear bomb joke until you said it. I mean, from me reading that nuclear joke, it's obvious to me that the poster wasn't being serious.

But I'm not from Bradford. If it upset some posters, they're feelings are valid.

It's obvious to me as well that they weren't being serious, I don't think that someone thinks Bradford should be quite literally bombed, it's just in very bad taste and not at all funny, whether it was said about Bradford or any other town.

I just visited Bradford for the first time this weekend.

From it's bad reputation, I had very low expectations. I expected it to be a dump.

I was very pleasantly surprised. It's nice and clean. It was very nice to walk around. It's not the most picturesque city , but it was peaceful and nice when I was there.

Yep, that'd always been my experience too.

All cities these days have drug problems, but Bradfords drug problems are worse than most.

TwilightCat · 23/12/2024 07:46

A PP mentioned that people think York is amazing but it still has drug problems, shoplifting, people urinating in the streets, etc…so if even the shining jewel of England has those issues and people still think it’s great, imagine what Bradford must be like?!

LittleDeeAndME · 25/01/2025 09:37

I think you all need to support the City of Culture celebrations if you can - there is so much to see and do - Bronte country is stunning and Saltaire is such a unique town - your views may change.
