Bradford

What is Bradford like? I'm starting a new job in Leeds next month. I'll be renting in Leeds for a while.

But I was looking at property prices, to buy in the future.

I see that there are some nice and affordable apartments in Bradford. Which is not far from Leeds

Does anyone know much about the place? What's it like? Thanks!

Anything is easy to say. Anyone who didn't want to talk to me because of where I lived would be no loss to me.

It's a joke that both Scousers and Birkenheaders are in on. I lived in Liverpool for a while, they actually get on just fine and rib each other.

I disagree . I went to a group in Liverpool. And I saw women from Liverpool being really horrible to a woman from Birkenhead, because of where she is from. They told her that Birkenhead was full of alcos and druggies. They made her cry.

Blimey, you must have found some of the nutjobs then! They're all usually very aware it's a joke.

How is it a joke though when people look down on people for living in an area?

They don't. That's the point. I'm not from Liverpool, you'd have to ask a Scouser, but I know what I was told and what I experienced. 🤷‍♀️

Okay but I think we can all agree that there is snobbishness in the UK.

Areas are constantly called "bad" or "good" in the UK.

A lot of the hate towards Bradford is Islamaphobia. It has a large Muslim population and people say it's like Pakistan. I want to emphasise that I like Bradford and there are many nice places to live there. My colleague lives there and absolutely loves it. She's white, British and has no problem with the demographics. Just bear in mind that some of the people hating it are the type of people who call London "Londonistan".

I recently moved from Bradford - not for any reason to do with Bradford. I lived there for 20 years. Yes it has some areas you wouldn't like (and nothing to do with ethnicity, everything to do with poverty and social attitudes in those areas) but it was a fantastic place to live. Like anywhere, get to know it and don't buy without doing that. I should say that my job in Leeds was to do with crime / safety - factually speaking there are areas of Leeds that are FAR worse than anything in Bradford. The diversity is a huge plus in my opinion. There's a lot about it I miss. Which is why I go back so often!

How? You said you wouldn't want to be friends with people who looked down on you for where you lived - I assume in relation to the Liverpool/Birkenhead comments. My reply to you was that those people actually don't look down on each other. Birkenheaders give as good as they get, it's an injoke aside from a few weirdos who take it seriously.

@Lisanoonan I agree with you on that! There are definitely places looked down on, and sometimes for no good reason, sometimes for good reason.

I don't know if it's always snobbishness. Sometimes, definitely. Other times I think people just see areas and know they're known for drugs/gangs/violence, and that's the impression that stays with them.

Ah, on your first paragraph I misunderstood you but I think I was talking to the OP in any event initially.

Lisanoonan · 18/11/2024 17:20

I'm amazed more people haven't reported this comment . Wow utterly horrendous thing to say

It is just a figure of speech trying to express in a metaphorical way the sensations that the godforsaken place have in me.
Just because you don't agree with me, that does not give you the right to ban my freedom of speech.

Shropshire/Cheshire ways in a little rural village. Definitely not the area I was born into!

It is lovely, but like I was saying to a pp it's the same as anywhere - you can drive down the road and in 20 minutes be in a "bad" area. It's funny around the rural areas because some villages are gorgeous and vibrant communities, and others are really deprived with nothing in them. I think a lot is to do with history and transport links.

Still an awful thing to say regardless of your "freedom of speech" there's many places I wouldn't choose to live but I wouldn't say what you said.

TrtseHkpr · 18/11/2024 17:40

It's a real mixed bag, Bingley, Cottingley, Baildon, Eldwick are all nice, Haworth (where the Bronte sisters lived) is much further out but lovely. Skipton is beautiful but much further, although it has a good train service to Leeds. Avoid anywhere within the ring road, it's not good/particularly safe. The standard of driving is hair raising, but you're never more than a 20 minute drive from some spectacular scenery. Good luck!

What a boring world it would be if we all had the same views about everything. But I would never censor somebody else's opinion just because I don't like it.
