Will a Lumie alarm clock (or similar) work for me?

I'm looking in to getting a Lumie or one of the other makes of sunrise alarm clocks, so I can wake more pleasantly on dark winter mornings.
I don't get up at the same time every morning though, so I would need one with which I can set different alarms for different days or one that is very easy to set the alarm (have read they can be tricky to set).
Other features I need to have is no flashing lights, and to be able to dim the time numerals. No noise such as electronic hum.
Also would like nature/ bird sounds to wake up to

I had a pretty basic Lumie and it was brilliant for the gradual light up in the mornings. It broke a while ago and now you've made me think I must get a new one

spuddy4 · 08/11/2024 18:27

I've got one. Tbh I still struggle to get up but I do have my alarm set for anytime between 3am-3:30am 🤦‍♀️ my Dp isn't a fan of it because it wakes him as well.

EmmyPankhurst · 08/11/2024 18:29

I have a basic one and set the alarm each evening for the time I want to get up the next day.

There is a more modern one in the bedroom I sleep in at a family members house that I also use. It's slightly more difficult to set the alarm but I still manage to do it each evening. However, the clock is in that room as it's owner has given it up as too complicated but it is also a bluetooth speaker/ radio etc.

I sleep much better using it as my alarm and it's one of the few gadgets I would immediately replace if it broke. I've had it for at least 15 years.

Based on every single criterion you gave, a Lumie will be fine.

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 08/11/2024 18:59

I have a cheaper Amazon version and it's great. You can choose a sound to go along with the light to wake up, dim the clock, and also have a "sunset" when you go to bed. I love it.

Namaqua · 08/11/2024 19:19

I actually had a cheap version before and despite reading the manual and following it, I could not get the alarm set! Neither could my DIL and SIL, I gave it away in the end.
Hoping a Lumie or other decent one will be easier to set!

It’s a doddle to set, imo! I only have the sunrise in the winter. You can choose whether you want a sound as well or not.

LondonQueen · 08/11/2024 19:24

I have one of the body clock ones and it makes a huge difference. The only time I can't see it working is if you are your partner wake up at different times, as the light wakes you up naturally.

WaneyEdge · 08/11/2024 19:25

I have one, it’s so easy to set. If you need to get up at different times across the week you do have to set it each night but it’s really easy. I also have birdsong with the light. I often do the sunset at night too.

Tillybud81 · 08/11/2024 19:28

I've had one, they are good. Although I now use and app called gentle wakeup, it works similar and gradually makes your phone screen brighter in an orange hue.

Not perfect but it is free and works for me

Helpagirlout222 · 08/11/2024 19:32

I love mine, and when DD wanted to try it, I got her one fairly cheaply from Vinted!

NewmummyJ · 08/11/2024 19:36

I've had mine for years, at least 10, and it's great, really helps those painful wake ups, I use to always seem to wake up naturally before it went off. I have small kids now so my wake up time so they are typically my alarm clock.

ArghhWhatNext · 08/11/2024 19:42

I have sunrise and birdsong and find it a brilliant and gentle way to wake. I find the settings challenging - tend to give to DH/DS to do for me, but a more intelligent/techie person than me would probably manage!

TomatoPumpkin · 08/11/2024 19:44

I ended up using my Alexa plugs to turn on my bedside lamps at different times every day using the plug’s app and tbh it worked the same for me waking up. I just needed the light

Namaqua · 08/11/2024 20:01

I've just snagged a Lumie on vinted for £5! Quite a basic model but it will allow me to see if I like it and find it useful then I can invest in the model of my choice. I do love a bargain

I searched lumie and found this thread. My daughter gave me a Lumie that she bought in a charity shop, knowing that I'd been wanting one. But can I get it set up? Nope. I've looked at YouTubes and online manuals, but they're getting me nowhere.

I know that Lumies have a shocking reputation for setting up, but really? I'm an intelligent woman, but it's defeated me!

How did you get on with your vinted one @Namaqua ?

WhenTheDragonsCame · 04/01/2025 14:32

@saraclara can you put up a picture of your Lumia? I've got one that is really easy to set but it might be different to yours.

Thank you! I suspect this is quite an old model.

That is different to mine. Are there any buttons on the back? That's where mine are.

WhenTheDragonsCame · 04/01/2025 14:52

There are YouTube videos showing how to set it up. Looks like it should be quite straightforward.

No buttons on the back, and the two YouTube videos that I watched for this model just skimmed past the tricky bit without explaining how to do it, unfortunately.

I'm keep trying though when I've got over today's frustration!

WhenTheDragonsCame · 04/01/2025 14:58

Which bit are you finding difficult?

that looks very similar to mine (which i've used for nearly 20 yrs) - what's the problem with it? I'm a tech idiot and have never had a problem with it (only use the light though not the alarm)

saraclara · 04/01/2025 16:15

The problems so far are that I can't set the time. I think I've done it and then it just defaults to the time that was on it when I first plugged it in. Also I can't turn off the sound. I don't want to use the alarm sound either. Just have the sunrise element. I seen to have set the time for the light coming on, but can't set the present time.

Admittedly I have up after 15 minutes of frustration. I wonder if part of the problem is that it's not new, so I'm not working from factory settings, but from wherever the previous owner set it?

Or maybe they sent it to the charity shop as it doesn't work 😟

LovingKent · 04/01/2025 16:47

@saraclara we have this Lumie. I think it's at least a decade old. I have the instruction manual and will try and attach photos of it.
