Will a Lumie alarm clock (or similar) work for me?

I'm looking in to getting a Lumie or one of the other makes of sunrise alarm clocks, so I can wake more pleasantly on dark winter mornings.
I don't get up at the same time every morning though, so I would need one with which I can set different alarms for different days or one that is very easy to set the alarm (have read they can be tricky to set).
Other features I need to have is no flashing lights, and to be able to dim the time numerals. No noise such as electronic hum.
Also would like nature/ bird sounds to wake up to

The problems so far are that I can't set the time. I think I've done it and then it just defaults to the time that was on it when I first plugged it in. Also I can't turn off the sound. I don't want to use the alarm sound either. Just have the sunrise element. I seen to have set the time for the light coming on, but can't set the present time.

Admittedly I have up after 15 minutes of frustration. I wonder if part of the problem is that it's not new, so I'm not working from factory settings, but from wherever the previous owner set it?

Or maybe they sent it to the charity shop as it doesn't work 😟

so mine's a bodyclock starter 25...not sure if that works the same as yours. When I turn mine on both the clock and the alarm time read 1pm. The first time that you can set by doing a long hold of the middle button (I think it's called 'set A) is the time you want the dawn to complete by. The next time you can set ('set C') is the actual time...so it's intuitively the wrong way round as am sure most normal people would try to set the time first then chose the 'alarm' time). The dawn starts about 20 mins before the time you've chosen. It might be that you've just set the time you want the dawn to happen, but then it defaults back to the time it was turned on (or mine always goes to 1pm when i turn it on). Then to set the dawn to happen press the middle button briefly so the clock display goes darker.

Just tried on ours as instructions are rubbish! As previous owner has already set time,to change press and hold middle button until you get option SetA (SetA) then press again to get SetC (set clock) then press + or - to set time. Press middle button to continue.

Customisation options.

By the way if the bulb ever blows, Lumie don't sell them any more. You can get them from other retailers online and Lumie told me you need a 42w dimmable halogen bulb (LED ones won't work).

Wow! Mumsnet comes through again! Thank you so much for your help everyone. I'll have another go later with those instructions, and report back. And yes, tomorrow I need to find a bulb because the one in it seems to be an LED. I think the charity shop bunged it in, if I recall what my DD said.

Just bought some for ours from Amazon. Hope they last!

I have a lumie and I can set varying wake times each day including no alarm at weekends. It wasn't the basic model but also wasn't too of the range. It has a radio which I don't use. I also quite like its sleep function where it gradually dims the light and plays soothing sounds

saraclara · 04/01/2025 17:19

I've set the time, and the alarm!

But I still can't get rid of the alarm sound. I don't want it to wake me up with sound 🙁

I think you want the page 9 instructions (setA --> off) that @LovingKent photographed.

I actually had a cheap version before and despite reading the manual and following it, I could not get the alarm set! Neither could my DIL and SIL, I gave it away in the end.
Hoping a Lumie or other decent one will be easier to set!

I've got a Lumie. Although I don't use the function, it does have dawn chorus as one of the alarm sounds.

I only use mine for the sunrise element, and it works very well. And yes you can set a different time every day.

I think they're great, as without it I was struggling to get out of bed even at 9am as I live in a very grey area of the country.

Thank you! I suspect this is quite an old model.

I’ve had that since ‘11 latest, can’t recall when I last replaced the bulb, it works fine, I only use it for sunrise, just me in the bedroom lol

saltysandysea · 04/01/2025 18:07

I have an old lumie (10 years at least). I don’t use the alarm but have the gradual 20 min sunrise along with the sound of crashing waves. bulbs can be easily changed with a standard dimmable one.

the actual time does drift though by a couple of mins a month - worth keeping an eye on.

I searched lumie and found this thread. My daughter gave me a Lumie that she bought in a charity shop, knowing that I'd been wanting one. But can I get it set up? Nope. I've looked at YouTubes and online manuals, but they're getting me nowhere.

I know that Lumies have a shocking reputation for setting up, but really? I'm an intelligent woman, but it's defeated me!

How did you get on with your vinted one @Namaqua ?

I like it, but the light doesn't wake me up, and I don't like the alarm sound on it. So I use it in combination with my phone alarm. It is a more gentle way to wake up but not exactly life changing for me, and not in my view worth the £100 that the model of Lumie I got for a fiver would have cost full price.
I hope you've managed to get yours set up.now, YouTube videos helped me set mine up
