Maggots in bin help

purpleme12 · 07/11/2024 09:04

There are maggots in my bin
I have been pouring hot water on and salt
While I think some have died there are clearly some still there!
They're not going away!
I'm freaking out here and I thought they'd be gone by now!

Just throw them out into the garden and they will be eaten soon. Speaking from experience!

BorderLove · 07/11/2024 09:06

I used to spray loads of Raid fly spray and slam the bin shut.

Where do I get this from?

An outdoor dustbin or an indoor one?

Yes, birds love them. Lay the bin open on its side to let them hop in and out, then you can give it a clean afterwards.

From a supermarket.

Greentreesandbushes · 07/11/2024 09:12

As per pp Raid works. Sold it n supermarkets as a fly spray

CocoDC · 07/11/2024 09:13

If you can put some spiders in there. They’ll be gone overnight

Speccytwit · 07/11/2024 09:13

Swill the bin out with hot bleach water and tip it all out onto the garden/path. Any still wriggling will at least be out of the bin.

Greentreesandbushes · 07/11/2024 09:14

The issue with leaving open will is that the bin is presumably not empty and this encourage flies and therefore more maggots.

dementedpixie · 07/11/2024 09:14

Spray fly spray into the bin. The only problem with the boiling water method is that you end up with maggot soup in the bottom of your bin.

Chaseandstatus · 07/11/2024 09:15

Your options are

clean your bin
pay someone else to clean your bin
leave the bin empty and open and wait for the maggots to become flies and leave

Greentreesandbushes · 07/11/2024 09:15

Also don’t put bleachy maggot soup on your garden.

BackToReading · 07/11/2024 09:16

Does it matter if there are maggots in your out side bin? They'll just go when the bin is next emptied.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/11/2024 09:18

They're not just going to disappear OP, even if you kill them the maggot corpses are still going to be in the bin.

Just tip the bin upside down in the garden so they fall out, you don't need to touch them.

Workingtoohardmummy · 07/11/2024 09:18

Find a local bin cleaner, they’re about £5 a clean where I am. A lot more reasonable than I expected

dementedpixie · 07/11/2024 09:25

They will go when the bin gets emptied and then you can clean it out properly. We have a bin cleaner that comes every 2 weeks (when the brown bin is put out) so that keeps ours a bit more sanitary

FreshOrangeJuice · 07/11/2024 09:31

Loving all the post saying they will just disappear when the bin empties, not necessarily, my bin is right next to my front door (there is nowhere else to put it and we are not allowed to put it on the street) and they all started coming IN to my house, they were everywhere so no they don’t always just disappear off with the bin truck!

Unless your bin is right by your front door I wouldn’t worry but yes they all started crawling in under the door it was horrific 🤮

KenAdams · 07/11/2024 09:37

You can't do anything apart from boiling water and bin buddy until the bin is emptied. Then you need to wash it out.

purpleme12 · 07/11/2024 09:37

God I'm so scared

Does this fly spray kill maggots as well as flies then?
