Maggots in bin help

purpleme12 · 07/11/2024 09:04

There are maggots in my bin
I have been pouring hot water on and salt
While I think some have died there are clearly some still there!
They're not going away!
I'm freaking out here and I thought they'd be gone by now!

What should I do then if you're saying I shouldn't put 'maggot soup' in garden?

Wheel bin to bottom of garden. Up end smartly & leave on its side. Watch happy feasting birds from whatever distance feels safe!

Give bin a rinse with boiling water & maybe bleach/disinfectant when you take it back out the front (tip over a drain).

MaybeItsBecauseImALodoner · 07/11/2024 09:44

Is it your wheelie bin outside or your indoor kitchen bin that has maggots.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 07/11/2024 09:46

Is there rubbish in the in at the moment? If there is spray the bin with raid, then when the bin is emptied clean it by putting boiling water and bleach in it, empty it into a drain on your property or if your drainpipes go directly into the ground wheel it to the nearest street drain. Then rinse out with a hose, empty again and leave upside down to dry. In future ensure you only put rubbish in the bin in tightly closed bags. If you're disposing of eg uneaten cat food bag it up and put some bleach in the bag before binning.

dementedpixie · 07/11/2024 09:48

The fly spray should work.
Then when the bin gets emptied the dead maggots should go with the rubbish
Clean out the bin when it's empty or get a bin cleaner to do it for you

Theoscargoesto · 07/11/2024 09:51

I had to do this too OP. Sometimes being an adult is crappy!

I boiled water and got sorted rubber gloves, a cloth, a bin bag, bleach. Took bin to road. Put bleach in bin by squirting it down the sides, did same with hot water. Swished it all round for a bit, cleaned outside of bin and lid with cloth, tipped bleach and water (and maggots) into gutter. Had another go with more hot water. Put cloth gloves etc in bin bag…….End result was good and it was easier than I thought it would be. Go get those big girl pants on!

Allthehorsesintheworld · 07/11/2024 10:02

Just hose the bin.
Lay it on its side and hose on highest pressure you can. I use my thumb partially over the end as I’ve no fancy nozzles. Drain then wipe it out with kitchen paper.

dementedpixie · 07/11/2024 10:06

I'd wait until the bin is empty before hosing/cleaning it out. A bit of disinfectant in there could make it smell nicer too as maggots smell really bad

PashaMinaMio · 07/11/2024 10:12

Rinse off any waste meat or fish plastic packaging before you put in the bin. Rinse out tins. Bag food separately before disposal.

Maggots are just “baby” flies so any Fly spray from supermarket of bargain shop will kill them.

Make it your routine to regularly wash out your bins. I do mine with a bucket of hot water & an old (kept for this purpose) mop. Tip bin up, leave to drain and dry.

It’s responsible grown up behaviour the rest of us have learned how to deal with if we don’t want fkng maggots! 🤷‍♀️

Radamanth · 07/11/2024 10:39

Am I being a bit dense here? Why do maggots in the outside bin even matter?

I'm sure there are maggots on decomposing animal corpses all over the place outside my house.

Inside the house is an other matter entirely, obviously.

VaguelyIneffectual · 07/11/2024 10:42

I pay someone to clean my bin. 15 round here for a one off. As above they come round the days the bin is emptied

Aaron95 · 07/11/2024 10:46

purpleme12 · 07/11/2024 09:37

God I'm so scared

Why? They are harmless. Either leave the lid closed and they will remain inside or open it and let the birds eat them.

Potentialmadcatlady · 07/11/2024 10:48

Just open the bin lid and let the birds do their thing

sueelleker · 07/11/2024 10:53

FreshOrangeJuice · 07/11/2024 09:37

Unless your bin is right by your front door I wouldn’t worry but yes they all started crawling in under the door it was horrific 🤮

Reminds me of the bug man in an episode of "Buffy"!

DexysMidniteRunners · 07/11/2024 10:55

@purpleme12
Are you putting food in your main bin rather than a small food bin? The fly maggots are because you are not disposing your waste food properly.

reluctantbrit · 07/11/2024 10:55

We had it in our food waste bin. When it was collected DH used the hose to pressure wash it out and let it air dry - at the other end of the garden.

No need for chemicals. If really needed, I would start with some normal all purpose cleaner before having a bleach puddle in the garden.

We have had maggots in our food waste bin outside. The food is double bagged in compostable food bags but is only collected every 2 weeks. In the summer when its warm it attracts flies so we get maggots. As we've had a shit summer here this year we didn't get them!

dottiedodah · 07/11/2024 11:21

I had this.Just spray fly killer in bin and close ,a few hours later ope the lid and air the bin .Job done! Also make sure you seal all meat and fish packs as well

Onthesideofthespiders · 07/11/2024 11:27

How old are you? You’re talking like you’re a teenager in your first home? Can you call your parents for help?

Because… really. Calm down. It’s some bugs in a bin. Outside. What’s the issue? You can leave the bin open and birds will eat them, or you can wait until the bin has been emptied and then wash your bin out. Job done. You really do have to calm down though. It’s literally a non event.

Onthesideofthespiders · 07/11/2024 11:28

@DexysMidniteRunners

Not every house has a food waste bin. I’m rural, my council don’t prove food waste collection or bins to my road. I compost as much as possible but out food waste has to go in the general waste black bin.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/11/2024 11:45

Pour in a lot of COLD water and tip the contents out onto the grass. Nature will take care of the rest. Say a watering can full.

[eyeroll] - don't empty bleach into your garden!

Maggots and cold water won't harm anything! You've made it all way more complicated than you need to by using chemicals.

purpleme12 · 07/11/2024 11:56

No I'm not a teenager 😂😂😂

We all have things that freak us out and that we find hard. Well this is mine

I will be off to get fly spray as soon as finish work

It will be collected tomorrow

Do bin men collect if it's got maggots?

Yes. They see them in multiple bins on every run.

You don’t need fly spray. Whatever you pour or spray into that bin will end up running into your garden. No. Maggots are natural. Those chemical sprays are not. The maggots also aren’t going any harm, they aren’t a danger and they’re OUTSIDE.

Leave it alone. Wait until it is emptied and wash it down with hot water. Use an eco friendly soap if you have one but you don’t need one, just hot water and a wash will do.

Not everyone has a food waste bin.

I have a green one for general waste and a grey one for recycling.
