Taking up roller skating as a adult

Anyone done this? I could skate as a child/teen,but not well. I could go round forwards, without falling over. That's it.

We have a really good local skating rink. They do lessons but the timing us awkward, just wondering whether to just have a go when I take the kids.

Being a bit fat and old, I'm scared. ..

I wouldn't try it at any age without being fit.

Allnewtometoo · 03/11/2024 08:27

Surely though it's good exercise to help get fit? I'm.not a complete couch potato, I walk miles (10 -20 as a weekend walk)

I'll look into pads snd maybe book the lessons. At least then I'll have an hour not having to dodge others.

So glad you posted this. In July, I was diagnosed with autism and I received post-diagnostic support.

One of the sessions was focused on 'finding the real me' because over the years, I had, without realizing it, just been copying others to fit in. I'd lost my real self and what gave me joy.

I thought back to when I was younger and one of the things I Loved was my blue suede roller boots. So I've just bought a fab pair (cruelty-free) plus helmet and pads.I live near the sea so am planning to skate along the boardwalk tomorrow!

Glad I saw this thread as I harbour secret dreams of being a middle aged roller skater. Or ice skater.

I’m put off by remembering how old and out of place I felt at ice rinks - in my twenties! My local rink seemed to be inhabited primarily by thirteen year old lads going at lightening speeds.

Anyone got any recommendations for adult-friendly rollerrinks and lessons around Manchester?

@EatTheBastard those skates are fabulous!! I had the blue suede with the kind of rainbow on the side, I'd love some again.

Go for it! In the words of Gwen Stefani: "Tick tock, tick tock, what you waiting, what you waiting, what you waiting, what you waiting for?"

I bought mine online from Skate Britain - very helpful and knowledgeable - helped me to select these skates Based on my needs from the wide variety available.

These are my skates! Look on Vinted/eBay for knee/elbow pads.

Oh brilliant, when are you going? Make sure you report back! 😁

Allnewtometoo · 05/11/2024 20:13

Saturday!! I get an hour. Then the "family skate" follows which the dc will do. Not sure whether to leave it at an hour or carry on. Probably won't be able to walk the next day!

I wish there was a skate rink where we live 😞

purpleme12 · 05/11/2024 20:35

Tempted to buy some now
Don't know if I'd be size 4 or 5

Omg I had skates like that as well. I was really good on skates as a kid. I'd love to do it again, I'm 53!

ThePoshUns · 05/11/2024 21:04

I'm not far from Cardiff either ....

Sk8terK8 · 05/11/2024 21:12

Sounds great, let us know how you get on.

Vettrianofan · 05/11/2024 21:17

Was recently in King's Cross London and saw loads of young ones on roller blades. Must have been a meet up group spot on a Sunday night near the station 😂

Thedailycookie · 05/11/2024 21:25

Not quite the same but I took up skateboarding a few years ago in my forties. Lots of fun and there are quite a few people of the same age to me; you’d be surprised how many adults take up this kind of thing!!

in what direction? If east there's a good rink in bristol, and an adults only hour, I think in risca leisure centre.
If west there's a whole adult skate community in swansea.
if nearer cardiff itself look at cardiff skate school by the football stadium.

ThePoshUns · 06/11/2024 07:27

Ooh I'm near Risca. Will have a look, thanks

HelloYouGuys · 06/11/2024 07:43

I'm not planning to take up roller skating like I did as a kid... but then I'm in my 70s.

I just wanted to say to all of you that are thinking of doing it, and those that are definitely doing it, a BIG well done!

You never want to regret what you didn't try, and if it doesn't work out, at least you gave it a bash.

Good luck ladies, have fun and enjoy "the aches" the next day.
🤭

Allnewtometoo · 09/11/2024 18:56

UPDATE!! I did it! I was so nervous, but the people there were really great with me. I started out very slowly (not even on the rink...) it's def not like riding a bike! By the end of the hour my legs were definitely getting tired, but I was doing laps of the rink in a reasonable (slow...) fashion. And I didn't hit the deck!

I can see it being addictive

OP posts:
Allnewtometoo · 16/11/2024 14:29

I did it again and I'm absolutely BUZZING!!

OP posts:
Sk8terK8 · 16/11/2024 15:51

Aah, well done. 🛼🛼👍

How long does the lesson last?

Allnewtometoo · 16/11/2024 18:25

It's an hour, which so far has been long enough, it's anazing how tired my legs get towards the end! There's a half hour break then the family skate so once I get more confident I will do that too.

OP posts:
Sk8terK8 · 16/11/2024 21:46

Yep, my legs hurt a lot when I started again.
