Taking up roller skating as a adult

Anyone done this? I could skate as a child/teen,but not well. I could go round forwards, without falling over. That's it.

We have a really good local skating rink. They do lessons but the timing us awkward, just wondering whether to just have a go when I take the kids.

Being a bit fat and old, I'm scared. ..

Glad I saw this thread as I harbour secret dreams of being a middle aged roller skater. Or ice skater.

I’m put off by remembering how old and out of place I felt at ice rinks - in my twenties! My local rink seemed to be inhabited primarily by thirteen year old lads going at lightening speeds.

Anyone got any recommendations for adult-friendly rollerrinks and lessons around Manchester?

Wigan Roller Rink do lessons on Sunday mornings and family discos on the weekends.

I started at 35 and I'm now in my 40s.

Very diverse crowd and if you go to one of the adults only night most people are 45+ in age.

Go you. I love skating. I'm over 40. Seriously overweight and love going round the rink. I have my own skates and put my DD in lessons for a few months as she wouldn't listen to me. She's now amazing and I get by and usually end up skating and filming her. I'll never do tricks or backwards but I don't care.

Keep going and look on FB marketplace for skates.

Thank you! I feel very much "go me!!!" If I'm honest. Found some skates on vinted so that's my Xmas pressie to myself. I know its early days but I'm loving it!

Skating as an adult is definitely doable. I started again after years off, and it was intimidating at first, but with skateraati, the joy and freedom it brings are worth it. Take it slow, wear protective gear, and maybe practice with your kids. It’s a great way to bond and rebuild your confidence. You’ll be surprised how quickly it comes back once you start Skating.

My aunt moved to Dubai a few years ago, and she was in the same boat—worried she was too old and out of shape for roller skating. But I convinced her to join me for a class at Skateraati, just for fun. At first, she was super nervous, gripping the railing and laughing nervously. But week by week, she got more confident, and soon she was gliding across the rink like a pro! The best part? She ended up losing weight without even realizing it because she was having so much fun. Now, she tells everyone that skating made her feel young again. You should definitely give it a go—you might surprise yourself! 😊

Oh lordy; there's a post onAIBU about skiing and how it is as dangerous as self-immolation.
I fear roller-skating may be demonised in the same way, because god forbid anyone has a bit of fun!
(Lighthearted, but the post about skiing is nuts)
