How can I stop my dog getting upstairs

I have a tall dog gate up the top of my stairs . But my German shepherd can get it open . I tried making it tighter . I even used lots of cable ties. Which she snapped and now she's broken the fixing that go onto the wall for the gate.. any ideas 💡

We have one of these, and while my retriever could knock it over he doesn’t even try, it just sits on the bottom of the stairs. But have used it since a puppy and even when it’s not there he doesn’t tend to try to go up. Your guy sounds more persistent though!

HonestPayforHonestWork · 01/11/2024 09:07

That look says, ‘Give up now, nothing you put in place will stop me. Also, I’ve started drinking your beer. Please keep the fridge regularly stocked because I can open that too’.

Beautiful dog, she looks so cute.... But defiant.

Train her not to go upstairs rather than containing her. It’s perfectly doable especially for a shepherd.

Ha ha that picture is very much “fuck you and the horse you rode in on”

how could you not want that beautiful dog upstairs!

Calliopespa · 01/11/2024 09:32

I think it’s a look of “going upstairs is just the first step in my ride to power.”

Hahaha. I would not care but she gets up there and both dogs trash the place

Can you close doors up there? When the dog gets into the hall there’s nothing there and all dogs closed so he just ignores really!

GoodGriefGordon · 01/11/2024 09:39

Notmeaning to sound flippant but the easiest way is if they just don’t. Set aside some time to train her not too, Ddog doesn’t go up stairs she’s knows she not supposed to. Though will occasionally if she has an upset stomach and really needs to get someone to open a door 🤣.

Buy a sheet of ply wood at B&Q or wherever.

Cut it to the width of your stairs, allowing for skirting board.

Buy 2 lengths of square 6mm x 6mm wood.
Cut it down to make 4 lengths the same width as the sheet of ply wood.

Fix the 6mm x 6mm 'batons' to the wall with a gap in between. 2 on each side to make a rail.
Slide the ply wood down the rails to block stairs.

Paint the rails to make look nice.

Done.

ETA: to make it harder for dog, Angle the rails and the wood away from steps slightly, discourages jumping over.

Does this stop op going up?! 😳

I'd understand the issue if it was a cat, but dogs can be trained. Especially intelligent breeds like shepherds.

None of our dogs ever tried go upstairs after they were small puppies because they knew it wasn't allowed. There was never a gate.

You're in charge, not the dog, surely?

I’m sorry but just give up now. This is the dog’s house now.

DrRiverSong · 01/11/2024 09:49

We have a bespoke gate at the bottom of the stairs that closes on a spring to stop our Dalmatian going up. Your girl sounds cleverer than my lad though, she might work out how to pull it open.

some sellers have ones with latches on.

No, because the plywood "Blocker" slides in and out of the rails.

(I've done this on a smaller scale to stop very determined ferrets... 🤣)

She can open all the doors

Buy lever handles, fit them upside down so you lift to open instead of push down.
