How can I stop my dog getting upstairs

I have a tall dog gate up the top of my stairs . But my German shepherd can get it open . I tried making it tighter . I even used lots of cable ties. Which she snapped and now she's broken the fixing that go onto the wall for the gate.. any ideas 💡

Haha 😂
That defiant look!
I have A Whippet with side eye like that ( when I go to cut her nails) but she is small compared to a GSD.
GSD’s are eminently trainable though.
That is an advantage.

Yes the thought of training my greyhound is as likely as flying to the moon.

I have another greyhound who just doesn’t want to go up. No training involved. Weirdos.

@Wellbeige Greys are far from thick
Their MO is to pretend to be underestimated.
Red, the famous Grey x at Battersea let all his mates out ( not his enemies) and they raided the food store!

He was so clever and funny
He went back into his kennel and the staff didn’t suspect him as the Guilty Party😂

@Shithole101 I did think of a tall metal type of gate maybe simlar to a garden one . But i don't know how I would stop her opening it . Also not sure about the width sizing etc get someone to come and measure up. we have one at the office outside the door. you can leave the door open but still have the gate padlocked and we got the locksmith to change the padlocks to use only one key rather than two. the dogs can see out the room at what is going on but cannot get out!

Wolfiefan · 01/11/2024 18:47

Is she tired before you leave her? A decent walk? Some training? If she gets into trouble with the other dog(s) can you take one or other on each school run?

peoplearepeople · 01/11/2024 19:55

Do you manage to exercise her op? It's really really very important. German Shepherds need a lot of exercise. Not just a quick walk around the block. They are smart and get bored easily as you are discovering!

I remember your previous posts. Do you have the time, energy and headspace for high energy dogs? I'm not having a go by the way. It's just that training and exercise is the key to this and it seems like that might be a lot for you to take on with everything else.

A8674 · 01/11/2024 20:27

Give her a few baths. Ours went through a spell of rolling in fox crap. The subsequent baths turned her right off going upstairs.

6.30 am = 20 min walk .. me
9.30 am = 30 min walk ... me

Around 2ish adult dd and /or teen ds takes her out for about an hour or so . To run round the green/field area with a ball.

I put the wrong times earlier about when she's left alone. I forgot that I now pick up my kids and my GS . So dd stays with the dog for the afternoon school run. So she's 0nly on her own between 7.30 am till 9.30am

Train her not to.

She can open all the doors

Lockable doorknobs. Keep the keys on a little hook. They are a bit time consuming but after a bit everyone gives up trying.

She will scratch all the paint of the doors.

When is she doing this? During the time she is alone?
Rather than looking at the symptom, I think you need to look at the underlying cause. Why is she going up there and what does she do once she has? Tbh my first thought (I’m a dog trainer) was separation anxiety.
I think you need to look at the bigger picture - she sounds stressed.

ThePoetsWife · 01/11/2024 21:48

Give her breakfast in kongs while you're out

Itabsolutelyispossible · 01/11/2024 22:36

You will just have to sit on the stairs. And never go out.

She looks so regal!

notprincehamlet · 01/11/2024 22:45

I'd try swapping out her beers for something non-alcoholic. After all, who hasn't tried vaulting over a stair gate after a few drinks?

I will give it ago . Maybe I will just let her drink on a Friday night?

Can you put something on the stairs behind the stair gate but leaning against it at an angle? So it makes the jump too big and wide for her?
One of my Dalmatians jumps the stair gate and goes upstairs and wees on the floor in the hall when I go out. By making the jump too wide for her that has stopped her. Now she does her protest wee on the kitchen floor instead but at least that’s easier to clean up!

PaperTyger · 02/11/2024 07:13

Can we have another picture

She can open all the doors

Change the door handle to a door knob. Our Lab can open doors with handles but not the ones with knobs! (Well not yet she can’t)

notprincehamlet · 02/11/2024 07:30

I'm awaiting the op's follow up thread the dog changed the locks while I was out at work and now I'm living in my car
