Why is Metanium nappy cream suddenly out of stock / unavailable everywhere?

TribulationPeriwinkle · 06/11/2024 19:04

Aah, I get it to the tune of Millennium - “metanee-ummmm”

I haven’t tried it yet but apparently SudoSalve is ok. If anyone has any suggestions for something with the same active ingredients as metanium, I’d love to know though

BLACKSABBATHBAB · 06/11/2024 20:38

Savers have it online for click and collect

We used this with our oldest two. My SIL suggested Drapolene this time around which has been fab- and less hideously coloured!

teatoast8 · 06/11/2024 20:45

Didn't help my kids

aintnospringchicken · 06/11/2024 22:00

That explains why I couldn't find any in stock for my granddaughter.Tried Asda,Boots and Superdrug.

MessyNeate · 06/11/2024 22:55

I work on a neonatal unit and we were told about six months ago it's no longer licenced for use in babies and children

Ambienteamber · 07/11/2024 00:01

I've been using sudosalve but it's just not as good sadly... metaranium ointment yellow cream was the best!! It clears up really bad nappy rash in the space of a day!
The sudosalve takes ages.. my baby's has still not completely gone.
It's such a shame they aren't going to be making any more metatanium.. what will the mums of the future do!?

Carouselfish · 07/11/2024 00:04

It's weird. Same thing happened with castor oil and zinc cream that I used to use as a barrier. Never had nappy rash using a little of it every time. Then suddenly Boots stopped it. Brought one out that was a totally different consistency and didn't work at all. Had to use vaseline which wasn't anywhere near as good.

TribulationPeriwinkle · 07/11/2024 16:38

IIRC, the reason they stopped making zinc and castor oil is that castor oil is poisonous if ingested. It has the same basic ingredient as ricin.

I wish it helped my kids. Sudocrem works the best for them thank fully.

SnowSnow · 07/11/2024 17:02

Savers online are currently showing it as in stock.

Novemberisfinallyhere · 07/11/2024 17:03

Oh my word it's £16 on Amazon currently. Panicking now as that cream is the ONLY thing that works for my child's nappy rash 😳

Mylittlebobble · 06/11/2024 17:26

I sing "I am metanium!" Instead of titanium. Its stuck in my head now.

😂😂😂

Jxx · 11/11/2024 23:18

Weleda nappy cream is by far the best out there! I’d highly recommend it! Not the cheapest but brilliant, all I use on my little boy xxx

I’d want to know why it was withdrawn before I signed anything.

I've got two half tubes. Reckon they could be worth a bit on eBay if I wait a month or two 😂

It's obviously been discontinued for a good reason, so I won't be signing

RandomMess · 22/11/2024 21:24

Anyone battling with hideous nappy rash Sprilon Spray designed to prevent bed sores from getting worse. Cost ££££ but amazing.

Islandsintheocean · 22/11/2024 22:19

@teatoast8 @TribulationPeriwinkle

Our daughter depends on this stuff - she has complex bowel issues post surgery. Used by lots of continence teams across UK.

Rumour is it been discontinued because it has an ingredient that is hard to get hold off and is expensive - impact of Brexit and supply chain. The official statement is here though-

The brand was sold 14 years ago for £2m with less than £0.6m annual profits total to Thornton & Ross. They in turn were sold to Strada who are owned by private equity including Bain Capital.

So it’s not a big money maker - the white barrier cream continues the brand and is cheaper to produce. It’s a business decision. I’ve been in touch with them directly.

They could choose to pass the IP in the process to someone else - but they haven’t done that. Easier to shut it down. It’s their choice - not because there is an issue with a proven product used in NICU and PICU units for years.

But not worries about the signatures ✍️. It’s either a needed product any people support it or they don’t.

Many moons ago I used bepanthen on sore nipples. It definitely helps healing and prevents infection.

TribulationPeriwinkle · 23/11/2024 08:53

@Islandsintheocean Thank you for that info - really interesting. It’s also been important for us, as my daughter is 10 and still in nappies and prone to all sorts of rashes and irritation.

It seems strange that no one has produced anything similar isn't it given the active ingredients are very apparent.
