If you previously didn’t like coffee…how/what/who got you into it!

Lighthearted but I previously always claimed to ‘hate’ coffee…not sure why as always liked the smell. My sister got me into super weak lattes a few years ago and now I love nothing more than a strong black coffee. Funny how tastes change

My first maternity leave. Meeting up in a coffee shop was an almost every day occurrence and I got bored of having a diet coke like a child (and resentful of the price).

I can't say I ever really loved it without caramel syrup or sugar, but it was something to do and made me look like a grown up. Annoyingly, I now can't drink it after 10am if it's not decaf as it leaves me wired until well into the small hours.

Age 13 trying to seem cool at my new friend’s house as they drank coffee!

Idlechitchat · 29/10/2024 22:55

I had a stressful busy period at work and started forcing down a black coffee for the caffeine hit to keep me going. I’m now addicted to it and drink far too much 🙈

Started with a mocha as the tea from the work vending machine was so bad, around 6 years ago. Now a confirmed decent only coffee drinker. I think peri may have changed my tastes somewhat.

Justwantosay · 29/10/2024 23:02

My second child.
Espresso!
I do not mess around.

SallyWD · 29/10/2024 23:05

I disliked coffee but then DH bought a fancy bean to coffee machine and now I love it.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 29/10/2024 23:08

I absolutely love the smell of coffee. I used to hate the taste of it, couldn’t bare it, I now have one once a month probably but either a latte or a coffee of some description with a caramel shot. My friend got me into this on a visit to Costa during one of our many lockdown walks.

I just love tea, big mug of builders tea every morning, I also like chamomile and peppermint and I can’t replace it with coffee no matter how hard I try! I find tea really quenches my thirst and coffee seems to make me even more thirsty so I just can’t make the full switch as hard as I try!

Christ0nABike · 29/10/2024 23:09

I really really want to love coffee but I just don’t, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth even after a sip (or a chocolate / dessert). I love the idea and all the options, and I keep trying again but at nearly 50 I don’t think it’ll ever happen. One of my favourite smells though!

AdviceNeeded2024 · 29/10/2024 23:11

For any coffee lovers, there is a coffee and croissant scented jar candle by Pacific Wax Co. you can get in Asda for £3.50. It smells divine, hint of vanilla but definitely smells like pastry and coffee!

PrimitivePerson · 29/10/2024 23:43

The way my dad made coffee when I was a kid was revolting and really put me off, mainly because he'd heat milk in a pan and burn it - I can't stand the smell. Then he'd put a spoonful of instant coffee in. It always had a skin on it - ewwww!

Because of that I didn't touch the stuff until I was 38, and working in the dullest job I've ever done in my life. I always had a serious energy crash in the afternoon, so I started on lattes to keep me going. I soon developed a taste for them.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 29/10/2024 23:48

Hated coffee until one cold day walking back to work the coffee shop were giving away samples I loved it from the first sip!

Sunplanner · 29/10/2024 23:58

Used to hate coffee and was a confirmed tea drinker for years. Now most cafes charge almost as much for tea as they do coffee. So I tend to go for coffee as tea seems so overpriced for something simple I can make at home. Whereas a barista coffee is something I can't do myself. Strange logic I know! So really, the COL has turned me to coffee!

DinosaurOfFire · 30/10/2024 00:01

I hated tea and coffee whenever they were offered to me until I was about 19, when I realised the smell of them was nice and tried them without milk. Turns out, the bit I didn't like was the warmed milk bit. Black tea and black coffee? Those are lovely.

WoahThreeAces · 30/10/2024 00:02

When my kids were little I'd meet friends in a local cafe, I always begrudged paying for a cup of tea when it was literally the same tea bag and hot water I'd have at home, so I decided to try some more interesting drinks. My first coffee drink was a gingerbread latte with cream!
Didn't take long to become a coffee enthusiast 😁

Printedword · 30/10/2024 00:05

As a child it was instant coffee with milk. Instant coffee gives me indigestion. I like black filter coffee

Caswallonthefox · 30/10/2024 02:39

My 1st husband. It was less hassle making 2 coffees rather than 1 tea and 1 coffee. Plus his mother couldn't make a decent cup of tea if her life depended on it.

I know what you mean. I happen to be drinking an instant coffee at home as we speak, but when I'm out, a barista coffee is something I enjoy that is far too much hassle to make myself, and I'm not going to fork out for an expensive machine to do it for me.

BigDahliaFan · 30/10/2024 11:05

Used to not mind it. Then I think peri menopause (or just age) made my tastes change. So I couldn't drink it - just didn't fancy it.

On holiday recently, the choice was good coffee or crap tea. I went for the coffee and now I'm rather craving it! Might even buy a coffee machine....

OliviaRodrighost · 30/10/2024 11:08

I had awful insomnia as a teen and wanted to drink coffee for the caffeine. I started off with a homemade “mocha” - basically a couple of spoons of instant coffee and a couple of spoons of hot choc powder in boiling water. With squirty cream on top! 😅 I gradually lessened the chocolate and then moved on to cafetière coffee and eventually an espresso maker.

I now use an Aeropress with Lavazza Crema Gusto coffee which is delightfully strong. I do a gingerbread latte if I’m fancying something sweeter.

NorthernGirlie · 30/10/2024 11:09

I feel like I hit 30 and my taste buds changed. I sipped dh's to take a tablet and thought it wasnt too bad. I kept stealing sips, he started making me 1 of my own.

Still prefer dh to make my coffee 💗

I still hate tea though!

dumpling123 · 30/10/2024 11:30

2 small kids, working full time and an urgent need for caffeine. I don't really like it but have managed to adjust at home with sweetener.

Coffee out is a delicious heady sugar infused treat! More for the sugar than coffee 🤣

AlexaSetATimer · 30/10/2024 11:42

Going on holiday to Italy in my 20's and having proper espresso coffee, which was a world away from the instant muck at home.
I still love a strong black.

All those creamy, syrupy concoctions are closer to dessert than coffee, and not for me.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 30/10/2024 12:07

Mocha

LuLuRN · 30/10/2024 12:14

I keep trying to like Coffee, I love the smell but just hate the taste.

PrimitivePerson · 30/10/2024 14:29

I'm thinking of that classic scene in Airplane right now:

"Cream?"
"No thank you, I take it black...like my men."
